The first affordable mass production one, are there any left?

The bike shop I worked in the late 80’s (when back from Uni) sold Funks. I could never afford one but did covert them. Really very nice but not in that OP’s colour scheme. We sold Nishiki’s too. I do remember a customer coming in when the back end had come undone 🙂

We also had the first pair of Rockshoxs in the UK. Damn they were flexy!

An estay bike is definitely on the list for my growing retrobike collection. I’d love an Alpinestars CroMega, and also like the look of a Haro Implse.

Just sold an e-stay frame on eBay 😉

On one of the framebuilding forums there’s a guy who built an e-stay Fatbike. It looks ace.

A kirk in one piece is a very rare thing indeed.

Why did they die out? Funny that short chainstays ate back in fashion.

I saw a minty mint Kirk Precision today (science museum), not e-stay though.
As a teen my dream bike was an Al-Mega…

Had a 93 al-mega, best jump bike ever. I’d love to see an e- stay 29 er or 27.5 . The al-mega chainstays were 15.5″, it felt like I could ride up walls in the granny gear.

I had a cro-mega lx. Loved it despite the incredible flex, wish I had kept it 🙁 Flouro pink and white would be so on-trend now..

Not just the short stays that are back in fashion, the Al-Mega also had a long top tube/short stem, and tweaked head and fork angles to compensate, essentially all of those things that Gary Fisher “invented” ten years later with his Genesis geometry.
Anyone else remember the Saracen appearing as a Halfords Carrera with full XT kit ayear later, and getting rave reviews from the mags?

Ironically short stays are crap on steep stuff.

I had a aluminium Pacific elevated stay frame with 1.25″ headtube, I got it sprayed green/yellow/red fade & found some white Mag 21s for it.

I used to ride mine wearing either cut down purple 501s or some black full length Troll lycra with multi coloured paint flecks on em. Purple and green Pony Axo attatched to Odyssey triple traps via Power Grips. Red & blue Nevisport fleece top. First bike I took to the Lake District that was.

Aye, though perhaps an idea worth revisiting with the recent popularity of big wheels and belt drives.

I’m glad people spend money on stuff like this still, just so I can look at the pics.
