right properly sick of these rims.....they have to be the worst rim in the world for removing/replacing tyres on, a proper pain in the @rs@

iv them built onto pro 2's (hope hoops) stupid question 1...I can just change the rims and reuse the spokes..yes?

iv mavic 719 on the 6" bike and am fairly happy with them, the dt swiss are on the hardtail which is mostly xc but with a few 2/3 foot drops etc

so change to 719 or is it time to go tubless? if i go tubeless can i still use the spokes? and whats a decent strong tubeless rim?

cheers

mark

With the ex500's it is key to push the tyre bead into the center trough of the rim. This my seem counter intuitive when putting on or removing a tyre but it does give you enough additional slack in the tyre to get it on.

You can get tubeless kits for the ex500's which may be the most strait forward way to go tubless however if you are determined to change the rims you will need to get ones with a similar ERD to the DT Swiss ones to re-use the spokes.

Spokes are spokes and make no difference to the ability of a rim to be tubeless.

ok....sorry dont get the pushing the bead through the rim?

removed tyres tonight, usual 1 lever in, hooked to spoke, a real hassle getting the 2nd lever in and even worse getting any movement to pull the tyre off.

had to resort to a bit of fairy liquid getting the new tyres on.

seems proper stupid but what way do you do it? (never had a problem on any other rim)

cheers for any info

They are really tight, it is very difficult, but if you work round a small amount at a time they will go on. Mind you dont pinch the tube with the levers though, I've done that many a time.

I have to admit I was close to binning the rims for the same reason you mention, but now I seem to have developed the knack.

I've also gone tubeless using the stans notubes kit. I used the rhinolite rim strips and they fit perfectly

So to convert did u just use the tape and sealant? Normal tyres?

I'll have to convince myself to keep the rims before going tubeless with them.

Getting the tyre off is more hassle than getting them on!

What tyres? I used DT5.1/EX500s for a couple of years with Minions and had no issues. Some tyre/rim combinations are horrendous, others nearly fall off without a tube in them (eg. Kenda Nevs on mavic 717s).

As Rusty says you need a rim with a similar ERD and the same spoke count. Then tape new rim to old, moves spokes and nipples over, and built up the wheel using the guide on www.sheldonbrown.com.

Just done this with my 5.1s as I'd flatspotted them, replaced with Sun Ringle Equalizers. Not even fitted tyres on em yet so cant say if they are better or worse though!

Sorry i'll try again. you need to push the bead of the tyre into the the trough (lower channel section) in the middle of the rim rather than leave it on the raised outside edge.

The rims are a tight fit, but if you push the bead of the tyre away from the rim into the centre channel you get some slack in the tyre that makes it alot easier to get the tyre on or off.

I have EX500s also and can vouch that they're a PITA to change.

Rusty Mac's above advice is the way to go tho'.

This is a jpeg of a EX500 rim,

when changing tyres, put one side on,making sure the bead sits in the red area, before putting the other side on HTH

I've run EX500's for years on my DH bikes, never had an issue getting a DH tyre on or off them?

removed tyres tonight, usual 1 lever in, hooked to spoke, a real hassle getting the 2nd lever in and even worse getting any movement to pull the tyre off

There is your problem. That one tyre lever is pulling all the slack between the rim & the bead by hooking it on the spoke!

Use 2, about 3 inches apart, at the same time.

just re-reading that I don't know if it is obvious or not but you need to work round the whole tyre pushing the bead into the central channel not just the first bit.
