Spent quite a bit of time and money on sprucing up the decking last summer. Used Ronseal believing it would do “exactly what it said on the tin”.

Gave the timbers a good clean / brush down and applied 2 coats of stain.

TBH looking at it now you wouldn’t know I’d touched it!

Any recommendations for a decent stain that will last or is there some other product that I need to apply as well?

I was in B&Q the other night when some old geezer in an orange apron walked up to me and asked me if I wanted decking.

Liberon Decking Oil.

From a recomnendation on here.
Not cheap, but our local Screwfix are as cheap as anywhere.

We inherited loads of tired decking and made the same mistake with Ronseal.
The Liberon stuff is infinitely better.

Would have saved me about a weeks work restripping it and prepping again too!

Would I have to strip the existing (now blotchy) decking stain or just apply a couple of coats over the top?

Went down the Ronseal route like you, with much the same result two winters running.
Liberon last year, only managed one coat because of time restrictions/weather and the results are impressive – as in it`s still on the decking.

Spent hours with the pressure washer getting the stubborn remains of the old stuff off.
Ironic, because it just wore/flaked off/looked awful in most places.

Didn’t pre-treat the wood, but we went for the darker oil.
Even after two or three coats you can still see the remnants of the old stuff on the uprights, so it pays to do as much prep as you can stand.

Didn’t try the chemical strippers, they get terrible reviews.
Took about a dozen goes with the pressure washer to strip it properly.
Ours was a mess though.

Still got a bit to do this year, but the Liberon is great stuff.
