You know the levers that mount in the end of bullhorn bars with an expanding plug thing?
Can you get levers that do the same job but that clamp round the bar rather than fit in the end?
Obviously normal road brake levers have big hoods which are redundant on bullhorn bars so I don't really want to resort to using those.
Any ideas?
You want something that puts a brake lever parallel to the handlebars, and clamps around it?
Couldn't you just use a normal flat-bar lever? I guess it'd mean cables going out in a funny direction though. You can get flat bar levers that pull road bike amounts of cable.
Or alternatively, you used to be able to get normal road levers without hoods. I have a 70s bike with them on (suntour ones), although I dunno where you get them from. Again the cables might go funny places.

Yeah, that would be cool except the cable exiting forward. I'm after a tidy setup ideally, routing the cables under the tape. If it's not going to work then I don't mind a bit of a messy setup, but if the right kit is out there I'd rather use that ๐

That's the ideal situaion to be honest - proper road bike levers without hoods, that don't spit the cables out all over the place.
VisionTech do a lever that clamps round the outside of bar, spendy though
i have bodged some sissy-levers to fit on the end of some bars, required shims to fit but worked ok
otherwise some normal road brake levers will be fine, they used to do it all the time

I think the cable will still come out the wrong end of those won't it?
Alternatively, you could stick flat bar levers on the right way round and see how that feels, you'd be pulling them in a slightly different direction, but it might just work.

Yes, unfortunately ๐

That would be an interesting thing to try, s'pose it relies on me other none-braking fingers not getting in the way...
Is that what you've done with those Salsa things, JoB? Mounted them with the lever blades pointing skyward?
Just for info, I need the ends of the bar available for mounting bar-end shifters on/in.
I'm currently running a Roadrat with flat bars and bar ends. Over the last six months I've found the only time I use the flats is to get to the brakes and shifters. So the idea with bullhorns is that I can get all my controls up where my hands are...
No, i had the sissy-levers mounted right at the end of the bars with the blades blades pointing back towards the bike, and the brake cable threaded into the end where the cable adjuster is in that picture
if you want to use bar-end shifters having a brake-lever anywhere near there is going to cause cable issues, would STIs not work for you?
Drop bars, STIs and ride on the hoods would seem the easiest solution to this!

Hmm, didn't think of that.

STIs would work but for the cable direction being wrong, no? And they'd also have redundant hoods at the bar tops which I'd like to avoid if possible cos I'm a bit of a ponce who cares about looks.

When my bullhorn-stubborness gets me nowhere that may well be the solution I'm forced to settle on.
Anyone know anything about the arrangement at the front of the aero bars on this page?
It appears to combine bar end shifting and braking at the same point.
Found that product above - the shifter monted brake lever.
It's called the HED Third Brake Lever
One side only by the looks of things, so no good for my use. Shame they don't do Third and Fourth Brake Levers.
Though it looks like JTEK make both right hand and left hand versions.

I know I know, nobody's listening anymore...
those levers on the TT bars look good for slowing down a wee bit for a corner while you're in the tuck position during a time-trial, i'm not sure i'd trust them to actually stop me in an emergency

and that Pauls solution looks tidy, although the gear lever has quite a long throw, it's a bit of a reach on flat bars, which might make the full-forward position a bit awkward.
My apologies for going silent on this front... thank you for your further replies.
I've made the leap to bullhorns (fitted over the w/e - very nice feel) and I'm currently running singlespeed while I find the ideal soultion.
I have fitted bar-end-plug mounted brake levers that route the cable straight down the inside of the bar and out through a hole further back near the bend, which is very tidy.
Ideally I'd like bar end shifters that route the cable internally (which I'm not sure you can get) and then fit some clamp mounted brake levers to run the cables externally.
The hunt continues, though with the added benefit that I know at least the brake cables are out of the way should I go for a clamp-mounted shifter solution (like that Pauls jobby). I'll have to get my hands on some bar end shifters and have a look at the throw, see if it's going to be a viable thing to convert them or whether it will be uncomfortably awkward as JoB says.
Let's hope my LBS is feeling patient next weekend... ๐
