Love that Ritchey, be interested to know if charliethebikemonger will be getting any in to compliment the also lovely P29er.

Now that would be a dream pairing of bikes for me.

The Ritchey cross isn't due in the uk until the end end of march according to the Paligap site, but I'm guessing that's maybe wrong?!

why aren't companies putting disc mounts on such new offerings, though?

A lot are waiting for true hydraulic STI units by Shimano/SRAM. A few are already, and I guess a few simply won't bother.

Speaking to a RaboBank rider at the weekend, there seems to be a split in opinion as to if there is an actual need in most CX races for disks.

Still I expect in 3 years there be standard

Steel race bikes? FAIL, this isn't 1987....

As soon as Nys adopts discs, all the pros will follow

some of these bikes have only 1 gear *gasp*

If you're a pro you'll be told which bike to race, if you're not then ride what you enjoy

+1

I like my bikes to look nice too, I like the look of steel bikes, as a result a disproportionate ammount of my bikes are steel.

Steel race bikes? FAIL, this isn't 1987....

Who said anyone had any intention of raceing on it? If I had one I'd just use it for training on fireroads away from traffic.

They have tubs so it's reasonable to assume they're for racing.

Only up to a point, In cross loads of the pros have custom geometry, one-off tyres not made by their sponsors etc etc.

The Swiss Cross is lovely, but I can't help thinking that I could probably have an 853 custom frame (with disc mounts 😯 ) made up for less than it's going to cost.

FWIW I can see the ambivalence to discs in cross racing - the brakes are hardly used*.

Actually, my current pointless fantasy bike is a custom 853 (or Columbus equivalent), disc-braked, SS/fixed crosser.

*this may just be a function of how slow I am....

Fixie-inc had me untill the price, £2400 for a bike that isn't even that pretty?

If you're going to make a steel bike, use skinny tubes, don't bother even trying to make it stiff.

Cielo CX racer is a beautiful steel cross frame with some amazing touches...

My Hakkalugi will be retired at end of season and replaced with one...

Also worth looking at are Moots Phsyco X RSL... They are in the realms of nuts money tho. Circa 4500quid!! Frame and forks!

I'm not usually bothered by aesthetics, but put discs on those beauties and they'd all look pigs.

Totally agree Oldgit!

You do not need disc brakes on a cross bike!! Never raced and felt under equipped on my carbon TRP frog legs!!

And at the last Super Prestiege round there was one person on discs in all cats..

Indeed but since when does everyone limit their cross bikes to only cross racing? 😉

Thats why there are 2 breeds of cross bike...

Race bikes, still been made year on year. Big bb drops, no bottle cages, steep seat tubes and a super short head tube...

Your also seeing more appearing with more relaxed geo that can be bimbled around. Come with 2 bottle mounts and a nice tall head tube for comfort...

If there was any performance gain to be had racing with discs they would be doing it already. Half the elite field are mtb riders. Companies that have given their riders the option as Cannondale did all demoed discs but raced on Avid Ultimate canti's... Those disc equipped Cannondales have not been seen at a race since.

Just built up my Seven Mudhoney SL for this season with Campagnolo, Thomson, Pauls, Ambrosio Nemesis and FMB tubulars.

[IMG] [/IMG]

Matches my other one which now lives overseas so only gets ridden on holidays (more's the pity).

[IMG] [/IMG]

She'll do me nicely until my Speedvagen turns up. Just placed my deposit for one of the 2012 batch with the upgraded ENVE seat top and integrated stem. I won't be using disc brakes for cross. Something quite pure about cantis and they stop me fine. Now starts the long wait until September 2012 when Sascha builds them. Grrr.

Just bought this from the Tesco of bike makers, I rode it 38 miles on an almost flat road last weekend to see how my back felt and can report no stiffness or pain at all, it would make a great tourer and it has destroyed my prejudice against aluminium as a frame material. As a winter trainer (which is why I bought it) it is nice and nippy on forestry tracks though you wouldn't want to take it into mountain bike territory for too long. A couple of hours of mixed riding leaves you feeling well exercised and happy.

Sasha helped design them but they are built by another framebuilder/s, the wait for a Vanilla though was up 5 years but the order book is now closed until further notice.
