Help! Now that the 'need' for a new bike has been helped along by the hospital I work at joining the ride to work scheme, the doubts are creeping in. I thought I'd definitely made my mind up and was going to get a day one alfine. However, I can also get a cheeky deal on a Croix de fer for just under a grand. My commute is about ten miles a day, using the trans pennine trail, so nothing too gnar, but I quite fancy getting some longer runs in on my days off. I am officialy confused dot com. Help!

Croix de fer or day one alfine?

Day One Alfine is going to be the simpler, lower maintenance option. Croix De Fer is going to be the more versatile option. I'd say if just commuting to work go with the Day One, but if you really are going to use it to get out and go further in your spare time on it, get the Croix de Fer.
I was considering both, but then realised that where I live there's naff all in the way of offroad riding anyway (got to travel at least 10-12 miles to get to any trails), so I was better off getting a proper road bike to ride from my door!

I had the same dilema and ended up choosing the croix. I was a little worried about the limit of the alfine gear range, my commute is more like 24 each way mainly on minor roads and canal and it fits the bill perfectly.

I've got the day one, I love it (although I have stripped it right down to a front brake, fixed gear and semi slicks) I look forward to riding it every day...

Help me yeti, help me. I want to get this ordered today, but my heads in bits. Prefer the look (sad I know) of the day one, but would the croix de fer be more usable? Aaaaaaargh!

Mitch I'd go for the Croix de Fer, without a shadow of a doubt.
Versatility is the key, but the Croix is also a better bike in every respect.
Plus it looks great in white with brown grips and saddle. I know about these things I'm a tart.

Depends on how much you are going to do on it outside your commute. Whilst I'm sure the croix de fer is a great bike (I have 4 Genesis bikes!), the Alfine will be easier and cheaper to maintain.

1 point to consider, putting an alfine on the day one will make it weigh more than a car.

I'm having EXACTLY the same dilema, thought I was settled on the Day One Alfine. Have 5 mile urban hilly commute on terrible N.London roads, crosser the right bike am sure. Is Alfine heavy? Wouldnt mind trying CX racing next winter, is Croix an OK choice for that if I do do it? Doesnt need to be brilliant....

Arse! Cheeky deal no longer available on the croix de fer, as the shop concerned doesnt deal with the NHS bike scheme. However, most of the shops that do are willing to let me pay the extra hundred quid in order to get the croix de fir through the scheme. Still not that sure though...
