For this of you who are not understanding of this, they are probably the three most famous words in philosophy.

‘Cognito ergo sum’ = ‘I think therefor I am’.

However there is a much better translation. The latin word Cognito is derived from prefex Co meaning together and the verb agitare meaning to shake. So the original meaning of the term cognito is to shake together. So the proper translation of Cognito ergo sum is ‘I shake things up so therefore I am’.

What a better definition could you have when we shake, rattle and roll around off road. Did they have an ancient version of mountain biking over 2000 years ago. Maybe sheep racing on an off road course.

I never enjoyed those modern guys, the Greeks had this forum in their sights.

For the serial bike buyers -“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” (Epicurus)

For those who need to MTFU -“The greater the difficulty, the more the glory in surmounting it.” (Epicurus)

For TJ – “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” (Plato)

I’m meant to be working this afternoon, but I’m too easily distracted by the web and taking photos in the snow and throwing snowballs for the cats to chase. It’s perhaps comforting to know that no lesser a person than Virgil was prone to the same diversions…
