held back on posting about some brake that were more expensive that merlin deal yesterday, some-one else didn't though…

What's the considered opinion about posting a 'thats too high' post on some-one elses classified's thread?

some people get all precious about it. Sod them.
I think its a public service to point out pricing daftness – this is a community for the benefit of all, not a scam market for someone to prey on the stupid or lazy.

Ton – I posted a similar thread last month
    http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/prices-in-the-classifieds

It is a bit daft now what some people are asking – TBH I don't even bother looking there any more, It's not as if the stuff is actually selling either

Ton has rear my mind but braver than me as I thought I'd be crucifide.

Yep Buyer beware but some stuff is a rip off. But if someone wants to buy my xtr mech for £90 please email me :O)

I wouldn't pay more than half price for anything 2nd hand and anymore I might as well buy new with a warranty.

Car prices have shot up too in the recession someone is selling an X reg Escort 1.6 for £1600 115K miles…I would buy it anyway but a pal asked if it was a good buy. Hell no.

Thing is there is one person* who will come along and buy it as my Bro in law sold his car for twice the value-it took 6 weeks though and it was ono but they paid the asking price.

Just stay clear of the adverts if overpriced!

My personal favourite is the ratbike commuter which has been re-posted repeatedly claiming to be a "BARGAIN".

So many threads with only 1 posts (the original advert!) on classifieds these days.
It never used to be that way.

If I was to put something up and it was priced too high I'd be very happy if someeone pointed it out.
Even if it was a "WTF?" or "No chance at that price!"

I don't understand why people get **** annoyed when you do it.

The ebay mentality creeping in I think, ie if it's on ebay it must be a bargain, when most of us can do a bit of research to find out if it actually is.

You lot should try the belgian second hand market. If something cost 1000euro 10 years ago, but they've 'looked after' it, they still want at least 900euro back. Crazy I tell you!

I usually get accused of selling to low, but they way I figure it, the money id better off in my pocket than in my spares box for all eternity.

Some peeps sell high, other sell low, others don't sell. C'est la vie modern.

It's only an ad. Nobody is being forced to buy the stuff, so how's it a scam? I guess you're ok with people picking stuff up at silly low prices, are they scamming the sellers ( who are possibly "stupid or lazy")?

I think some people check what stuff goes on ebay for, but often forget is that selling on ebay results in around 10-20% loss in ebay listing/selling/paypal fees.

I think we should start naming and shaming on the classified, that way it might get back to its former glory!

The default reply to every item you feel is overpriced should be "your avin' a larff geeza!" Keep posting until the price drops to something civilized, then the default post of "nice one fella" should be entered.

In a couple of weeks folk should get the message 😀

I welcome people telling if I've overpriced something on the classifieds, some stuff I'm just not sure what sort of price I should ask so just guess at it. As with anotherdeadhero most of the stuff I sell is too cheap (most stuff I sell is to mates) but I just want the money rather than the bits sat in the shed and it means that a mate has the bit they need too

that makes no sense at all. regardless of what deductions have been made, some one is still buying it at that price. so that's what its worth.

I advertised a set of wheels once and someone pointed out that a similar set could be picked up from Merlin for the same price. I was thankful they did, I revised my thinking and ended up keeping them.

I am happy for anyone to say my prices are too high etc, what I think is reasonable may not be but sometimes you need a nudge!! as others say if you price too high you wont sell, nothing lost to anyone..

Had simmilar once but the person went on to say that if i sold them to him or half that price then he would do me a favour and take them. Mine were unused but taken off a bike so had priced them at a bit less than i could find them on CRC.

Value is where buyer and seller meet. Second hand cars have increased in "value" due to the scrappage initiative creating demand for new cars and the number of old cars on the market is reduced.

when i sell stuff, which is often, if it is a couple of month old and not had much use i knock a quater off the price i paid.
most of the time after that timescale i sell for half price.
i have never had a single complaint or issue with anything i have sold on classifieds.

I've only paid asking price once cos I thought it was very fair for what I was getting. Any seller should ask a realistic price, but just because its second hand doesn't mean it should be dirt cheap. And it doesn't hurt the buyer to ask for a bit (or a lot) off if they don't think it is worth it. Some folk are embarrased to negotiate about prices, asking to pay less doesn't mean your tight!

thats right never hurts to ask, I ask in a fair few shops I go in sometimes they can sometimes they can't sometimes we meet in the middle no one gets embarrassed

So Ton are you trying to tell me something 😉

Its the old tactic of starting high as you can always bring your price down if it doesn't shift, you can't put the price UP once someone has shown interest (well you can but it makes you look like a James Martin).

Agreed it needs to be around the right price to start with but most people are open to offers and if its stuff that doesn't come up that often it can be difficult to price correctly in the first please so you have to test the water.

I see nothing wrong with people telling others if stuff is overpriced compared to what you can get it for elsewhere as long as its in a constructive manner. To just come out and say "thats too expensive" is open to abuse by people just wanting something for nothing and hoping by saying it that the seller will bring the price down to a level below what it's worth.

    As said above "buyer beware"

I find that I'll decide what an item is worth, by looking a new disounted and used prices, then set my price. If it sell on the classifides, then fine, if not it goes on Ebay.

I did this with my 575. Not much interest here then I got a bit more than the price I wanted on Ebay, taking fees into account.

The best one was my old 2004 Stumpy FSR frame. I wanted £200 (A fair price) so stuck it on here for £225. The best offer I got was £150 which I declined. I then sold it on Ebay for £354! The buyer collected and paid cash, too….

I managed a second hand/collectables store for two years and standard 'industry' protocol is to buy at a third of the value and sell at two thirds.

There were exceptions for items that retained their value through their being little to damage or go wrong and we did use Ebay as a median gathering tool in relation to what people were willing to pay.

I generally think two thirds of the RRP or bought price is a good starting point because then you can go back to a straight 50% reduction as a bargaining tool.

I was interested in buying a frame- mentioned I thought the OP's price was abit high considering what you can get it for. Which is fair as the OP said 'ONO' so I was preparing my case/what I thought.. and someone else (totally unconnected to the OP) stormed in with some dumb/wierd defence of the OP. Wasnt fair on the OP either.

As a rule though, 50% of what its currently selling for/unless its changed in design etc. But it must be of that years selling price, not 2007 Fox 36's using 2009's RRP. Different forks for a start.

Interms of 'offers'- theres a sensible offer (see above paragraph) then there is definitely lowballing (which is offering someone less than 50% of that items new price). All IMO of course.

saw some used flatties on yesterday for £45. Thought ooh like the sound of them, stuck em into ebay and they are £55 including shipping new from far east. So I bought some new ones.

Probably not quite what the OP intended…

It wouldnt offend me if someone politely pointed out my error. I tend to google mail order houses to find cheapest possible new price, then go about half give or take on condition. Haggled a few quid off a saddle recently on the same basis-seller had found it on one site for X, I found it cheaper on another site, we agreed a price on that basis and I bought the saddle. I've paid full asking price if I think it is a fair price and I'd rather guarantee getting it than get into a bidding war and lose it for the sake of a few quid. Paid £55 for a hope pro2 front wheel. Saw one a week later for 50 quid. Did I lose any sleep? Nope.

About 30% off for each year of age seem to be ballpark.

Surely haggling is to be expected with second hand stuff? I'd haggle at a car boot sale so why not on the classifieds.

Anything I sell I price higher as people will haggle me down and I will be glad to lower the price, and anything I buy I try to get as cheap as possible… admittedly I've lost out on a few buys I would have liked 'cos I wouldnt pay the price, but hey ho, maybe next time…
