  • Car key codes – question?

    Hi folks

Quick question re keys for cars.

Just picked up a second hand car, which all works dandy other than the keys. It comes with 2 of them, one works but the remote control is broken, and the other which isn’t coded to the car.

Can I just swap the chip from the broken unit to the working one, or does it need to go to the dealer for coding?

Car is Porsche Boxter, if that makes any difference

I’d phone a porsche specialist before you go to dealer

meanwhile, keep it locked up proper!

Keys can be an expensive minefield. Alfa for example will relieve you of £360 for a new key and there is no DIY fix. Keys that don’t fully work have often come from different cars with a new blade cut (easy) and without the immobiliser or remote locking function sorted (often somewhere between difficult and impossible depending on the car).

Yes it does. If it was a Ford, or a Pug I could help (you can swap bits with those, and I’ve programmed remotes into the car)

we got a mobile auto locksmith to get a new key for a clio for £100 when dealers were wanting £220. Sure these guys could do Porsches. Use the 2 dodgy ones for the spare and use good for day to day.

A key for a Jag I had was going to cost more than the car was worth, needless to say I never bought another key.

Which year and model boxster have you got? I have data on autodata for battery replacement and coding to car, just depends which one you have.

I got a replacement non-remote key from Timpsons for £30, they just needed a working key to code it from. Don’t know if they can re-code an existing key, this was on a Ford so may well be different for a Porsche, but worth a try and could save a lot of money.
