My Meta AM is in dire need of servicing – I have had it for almost 2 years, and not even bled the brakes…

    – Have an Epic bleed kit on the way

    – Bottom bracket (BB92) – much difference between the various options? Where’s cheapest? The Superstar ones have a metal body right – does that make them harder to fit? Guessing fitting requires the proper press (as opposed to block of wood and hammer)?

    – Fox Float 34 CTD fork – what seals are best – standard Fox from Mojo, Enduro, etc?

    – Fox Float CTD shock – standard £16 seal kit good enough?

    – Reverb post – don’t want to give it a full service (when you can get another one for close to that price) – cheap seal kit worth fitting?

    – Tyres – currently a Conti Baron on the front and an old Highroller on the back – what are suitable replacements? For mixed use, in mixed conditions!

    Thanks,
    Duane.

Your shock would benefit LOADS more for a fully specialist service, a seal kit is about a 1/3 of the service cost and you won’t be able to do a full strip/use half of the seals away.

Seal kit is £18, Mojo service is £111 :/

EDIT: Loco is £85, but still a lot!

All this in one go is going to be a big bill!

You might need to take out a small loan to cover this service Duane!!!

BB92 – I had a real headache getting the right one for my Stumpjumper FSR. Ended up with a Shimano one, but only because I think it’s a funny size – it’s BB92-41A, which at the time Hope didn’t do as part of their press-fit BB options.
If the Hope one had definitely fitted, I would have gone for that, I think although it’s a lot more than just replacing with Shimano. I think mine was about £30.

My LBS fitted it and when i mentioned having to get the correct tools for it, they said they just knock it out with broadly speaking a hamer and screwdriver around the edge – then just press it back in. I was a bit wary of doing it myself in case I ballsed it up!

Do you need new seals for the fork? Can you not just do a lower leg service/oil change and use the money saved on this to get the shock properly serviced?

Tyres – do you need to change them, or just fancy a change? I think your riding is a bit more techy, competent, fast than my mincing action so a tyre recommndation from me is probably pointless (although, you’d probably get good results from Spesh tyres – most people that try them, like them).

thats why you don’t go the mojo.
    jtech, Loco, TFT etc etc.

they don’t just put a seal kit, they change the oil and recharge the nitrogen as well.
plus you can get some level of tuning done as well. If you haven’t had it serviced for 2 + years of hard riding, you WILL notice the difference.

BB92 stick s shimano one in as good as anything else for the money

Hope do one now, as do upgrade. But £80 plus fitted (i think you need a special tool) is aleast 3 times the cost of shimano. (least one i pick up was £21)

shimano BB, proper shcok service job done.

I wouldn’t change the seals on the fork; oil change should be OK. Especially as you should have done it 18 months ago…

If it’s not leaking, don’t bother.

Its going to be muddy for the next few months, is it worth doing this stuff now? Surely as long as you are not going to permanently damage anything by not fixing now, its better to fix everything March/April time next year?

Fix what’s required as and when. Do it all in one go, it’s just a huge cost and then next thing something else will need doing (pivot bearings, shock bushings, headset, etc).

I don’t know much about DIY servicing Fox forks. If it was as simple as a Rockshox I would definitely do it DIY as service of the lowers is dead simple, and even the uppers is easy and the seal kits are dead cheap.

Rear Fox shocks – air can service is dead simple. Seal kit is pretty much the one from Fox. Think anywhere you go that’s what you get. It comes with seals and oil. 10 minute job to do really if you don’t faff. Longer first time if you spend time checking how to do it and ensuring you do it right.

Reverb, clean it, check the pressure is 250psi, other than that leave it alone unless there’s a problem with it.

Tyres – are they shot? If not, keep them, or not. Depends if you want to mess about with different tyres. That’s a whole new and huge thread of discussion.

If you DIY service shocks and the like, get some IPA and clean rags to clean stuff up and make nice and shiny. I also recommend TF Tuned’s refresh kit stuff for the fork which has all the bits plus oil and grease for the seals etc.

Bloody students! hold on….. you’re working! just gone tighter than a duck’s arse from living in Edinburgh too long 😉

Shock service will be worth it, especially if things are getting squelchy. Air-can service makes very little difference.

No point in touching the seatpost imo, as it’s just a seatpost. Send that away when it’s broken

Have you really not done anything to the 34s since getting them? Not even a lower leg oil change?

If that service is a proper tune, then it’s worth it as it’ll be set up properly instead of using the generic factory default that’s a middle ground for everyone. PUSH tune even more so. If you’re going to spend big money on a full service, get it PUSHed.

Air can service is an air can service. If the seals are buggered, it’ll make a difference, but then you’ll be losing air anyway so needs doing. Doing it in between isn’t necessary maybe but then it might stop it just failing mid ride. It takes 10 minutes to do and not a high expense.

    Cheers guys.

OK, so if the shock isn’t leaking, not much point changing the seals. I’m looking to get shoulder surgery in January so might get it serviced then when I can’t ride for a while.

    Fork-wise – OK ace, won’t bother with seals (no leaking to be seen). Will just do an oil change then – following this;
    http://enduro-mtb.com/en/how-to-lower-leg-fluid-service-on-a-fox-34/
With 30ml of green fluid in both legs (should I be replacing the Float fluid?)

Leg-end – yup, not done anything since buying the bike December 2012! (apart from replacing a mech, chainring, set of brake pads, tyre, rear axle, and lubing the chain a few times)
