Starting a new job in 2 weeks and need to replace my current man bag as it has my soon to be former employer’s name plastered all over it and the strap is held on with cable ties.

It needs to have sufficient capacity for a laptop, my enormous lunch box 8) and assorted other bits and bobs, but doesn’t need to be too big.

So, what is the hip young metrosexual gunslinger about town currently mincing about with carrying?

You could have a bag custom made, or choose one of the existing designs

I’ve got a large black Timbuk 2 courier bag, it’s ok.

    Good points

    It’s a courier bag so it’s cool
    It’s got lots of pockets
    It’s tough
It’s nicer to carry than the previous backpack thing I had

    Bad points

All of the 11! pockets are layered on top of each other, so if you put anything in them it gradually becomes a bulging mass.

There are too many pockets, because it’s a bulging mass you can’t feel where the things are and have to go through all of the bloody things.

You can’t keep the main compartment tidy, stuff is just piled in on top of its self and it’s suprising difficult to dig into the bottom if you’ve got much in there

The laptop pocket is only padded on the inside, wtf is that all about?

I would not buy another for carrying books, laptop and files about, not really fit for this purpose imo.

Why all the love for Timbuk2? They appear well made but when I was looking I thought the design wasn’t great so bought a medium Chrome bag.

For simple laptop and lunchbox duty I’d probably have a rummage in TK Max but then I’m not a very convincing metrosexual.

For the full Metrosexual look surely it has to be a Mulberry Brynmore

    HOW MUCH!!!!!!!

Don’t buy a “mebo”… the one I have which is like this is a POS.

The strap clamps are all broken and it’s held together my zip ties.

I have a timbuk2, but bought my GF a chrome (corsair? I think). The chrome’s better.

If you want to keep the cycling link, a mere £299 for the Brooks

Right, I am an expert on this. I have:

Timbuk2: well made, ace for cycling. Looks “bikey”
Patagonia Critical Mass (2001 vintage). Ace, massive, no laptop sleeve. Looks “bikey”
Patagonia 1/2 mass – laptop sleeve, stupid fixed shoulder pad and crap strap.
Crumpler something – cheap (£20 TK Maxx), good for cycling, no laptop sleeve.

And finally, for work I recommend the Osprey Flapjack. Laptop sleeve, sensible pockets compared to Timbuk2, boring looking (ideal for work), top handle so you can carry it like a briefcase. OK on the bike.

I actually feel ashamed now 😳

I like Timbuk2 ‘cos you can custom design it yourself.

    I bought this:

£14 from Matalan. Easy accommodates loads of corned beef butties, 1/2 bottle of White & McKaye and a copy of Razzle.

Sports persuit currently have some haglofs courier bags for £35, normally £70. Don’t know what they’re like or if this is what you’re looking for!

Brooks do a decent range, I bought one the other day (like the one hilldoger posted) It’s most excellent.
I wear it on the bike/tube/out of town and it’s rarely off my shoulder.

    Went for the Osprey.

Sensible colour, not got a million pockets, handle as well as shoulder strap, reasonable price and just a hint of daring red to make me look a bit grrr.

The only two acceptable bags for men are:

    1) A suitcase
    2) A Bergen (and preferably a big **** off gat)

Good choice HTS. The straps are removable on mine, came with 3 different coloured ones. I’m currently using orange.

Well I say currently, they were the ones that were on it and I haven’t bothered changing them.
