A pair of us living abroad want to do a 2/3 day walk through the lakes this January.

We are thinking of leaving day 1 about midday, walking all of day 2 and then going back home midday ish on the 3rd day. We are both quite fit and adventurous. Quite like to include a run around striding edge, for posterity’s sake. Walk should probably connect into bunk houses and be circular so that we can get back to the car.

    Does anyone have any suggestions/

Something involving staying at the Black Sail youth hostel maybe?

Mind you I don’t know if it’s manned during winter.

2 years ago (November) quite a few of us parked up at Kentmere, near Staveley then walked up Garburn Pass and over Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick, Thornthwaite Crag, High Street and down past Haweswater and stayed at Patterdale YH. Decent first leg and great YH.

Day 2 would have seen us do Striding Edge from Patterdale en route to Ambleside. The weather was horrendous wind and rain so meant we had to stay low so walked through Grisedale up to Grisedale Tarn and drop down on to the A591 where the Traveller’s Rest was a vision of loveliness and a very welcome sight! Carried on a nice trail that branched off at Grasmere towards Ambleside. Stayed at the backpackers hostel overnight http://www.amblesidehostel.co.uk/

Day 3 was a stomp over Wansfell Pike through Troutbeck (great pint in the Mortal Man) and over Garburn Pass to the cars. A great walk but if you do this type of thing you need to think very carefully about what you take as you’ll be carrying everything you’re going to need for those 3 days.

ambleside to Keswick via patterdale, or Keswick to buttermere and then onto black sail ( have a mooch around pulled etc).
