Do you have any tips or, must do, must see, while I am over there.

I have been to HK before so have done most of the well know attractions like the Peak, Ferry, the big Buda, night markets etc, so if you have any less well known jems, stuff that you might not find in the tourist books?

    No biking sadly 😉

American Peking – Wan Chai. Top nommage
Amazonia – Also in Wan Chai. Great bar with simply the finest rock covers band as their house band. They are brilliant!
Bistro Manchu – Midlevels, Elgin St
The massive underground car showroom on Gloucester Rd for some car perving! It’s also lovely and cool in there with the aircon. Just by the junction with Fleming Road, IIRC.
Cheeky beers at Smugglers in Stanley, keeping it old skool!

Oh, and definitely rain in to town from the airport to Central. It’s very, very good indeed!

+1 for Stanley – great little place and a very scary bus journey getting there

You can have a beach holiday there. Southbay or repulse bay by taxi, great stuff

Lamma island if you want a walk in the wilds. Peak gardens for something gentler

Flying ball bike shop. A bit out the way these days but awesome and scarily cheap (if your into smuggling stuff back to the uk)

If, like me, you’re from a little town and HK gets a bit too much, Big Wave Bay on a mid week afternoon is very pleasant.

Repulse Bay is nice for a wakeboard session as well.

Bus? Always take taxis myself, but it’s no less scary! 🙂

Live in HK and all the above are good pointers, can even maybe loan you a bike if you fancy a cheeky trail though 🙂
As well as Big Wave and Repulse Bay can also recoemend Pui O on Lantau, get a ferry from central to Mui Wo and take a hike through Chi Ma Wan country park to it (couple of hours), you can get the bus back.
Bull Bike if your interested in some window shopping, they have 3 shops (general bikes stuff, Triathlete and Specialized) in Ya Mei Tei all within the same short street.
For eating local food, lots of places but I tend to go to Shim Sha Po, also home to one of the larger computer centres in HK (think tech bizarre).

When are you going, it might coincide with a festival or holiday, theres loads in the first part of the year?

Yeah have look at Flying Ball. Wall to wall bling. I got some free socks off them.

Stanley is shit IMO, very touristy full of posh ex-pats.

1000 Buddhas in Sha Tin is interesting as of course is the big Buddha on Lantau island. There are also some interesting access only by foot villages.

Some nice places to eat out in Sai Kung.

Try and take a Junk trip if possible.

Also walk over Lion rock from Koloon to Sha Tin for a good view.

For the full Jackie Chan experience, get yourself up to an abandoned hill village in the New Teritories. Absolutely bizarre experience in a spooky jungley way. Sha Lo Tung near Tai Po, on the KCR train is a good one.

    Wan Chai titty bars

I’ve never seen any there. No, really. Never.

Yes Wan Chai clubs, cough, cough, feels collar…..

Wan Chai has turned a bit crap over the past few years…. not like it used to be! You’ll have to actually put a bit of effort in to getting your ‘collar’ felt these days, the ratio of men to women has inverted! To make the most of it you need to know which night all the maids have off…. 😉

Bar wise The Wanch on Jaffe Rd is good if you like live music with ‘enthusiasm’ – take ear plugs. Round the corner from Amazonia. Lan Kwai Fong is another popular spot for nightlife that’s not Wan Chai. Knutsford Terrace on Kowloon side decent for western food.

Other stuff that hasn’t been mentioned is the light show 8pm each night, watch from Kowloon side looking at the island. Longest escalator in the world in Central, if you’re into looking smart look at some of the tailors on Nathan Rd. Sam’s is the celeb one. Decent made to measure suits can be picked up for £3-400, and shirts about £30-40 each, just avoid the really cheap tailors.

You may know this if you’ve been before but take advantage of the town check in when you come back, you can check in & dump bags in central airport express and then carry on with what you were doing, means you havent got to spend 3 hours sat in the airport.

CFH – what’s the underground car showroom called? Never heard of it, but back out in a few weeks and it sounds interesting!

So I’m born in Hong Kong, did my time in the UK (the fatherland, for 15 years) and now back in Hong Kong… I think I know it pretty well!

No biking? That’s a disgrace… as there are some real gems (legal too! … and some cheeky) over here.

I would recommend getting in contact with Steve Coward at: http://www.crosscountryhk.com/

His business Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/CrosscountryHk

Find if he’s available at a time you’re also in Hong Kong and he’s got Giant Anthems amongst other bikes he’ll take you out on a guided tour with. Let him know if you want to do mincy-mincy or more gnarr-core and I’m sure he can work something out.

Without Steve, hiring a suitable MTB is a bit of a crapshoot in HK… best you’ll get hiring from a shop will be low-end hardtail Giants with cheapo bouncy forks. You can check the forums at the Hong Kong Mountain Biking Association: http://hkmba.org/

As for off the beaten non-touristy stuff… HK is mostly about food. You can literally spend a couple months here and you’ll have only scratched the surface of the good Chinese stuff. As always, there are guides that specialise in this… Daisann Mclane knows her stuff: http://www.littleadventuresinhongkong.com/

Otherwise, use the local foodie bible (in English): http://www.openrice.com/english

Great stuff, it looks an amazing place to go riding too, might just see if I can sneak away from the family for the day 😉

Thanks for all the comments, lots to take in.
