  • Achilles problem after long road miles, whats up?

Did my longest weekend yet on the racer, two 150 mile, hilly days around Argyll, Lochaber and Ardnamurchan.

Come Monday though I noticed my achilles tendon getting a bit sore, which has kept me off the bike since.

I've done long miles on the bike before so I don't think its the setup, and I was stretching plenty, so have any of the closet road riders on here got any other suggestions?

    Cheers

Pedaling technique perhaps? Long rides have a nasty tendency to amplify tiny problems

Aha, simple as that is it? I'm on the staple ibuprofen/deep freeze routine, trying to get the bus everywhere to avoid walking.

How long did it take to get better, I've got a century and a munro planned for the 21st/22nd (plus maybe a road ride with Cathro, could be interesting!)

Hmm… that does sound likely Lactic, I don't know if I'm 'ankling' so to speak, but I do ride for periods with my heels dropped.

Maybe need to raise the saddle a little next time and keep the feet flat.

you really dont want to know…. basically if i stop doing my stretches and calf raises i do daily for a week i am sore again after riding …. but good news is that ive got a good stretching routine going and can now do 600k in a weekend with no pain from it !

thrown lots of money and time at the issue with various specialists and just decided to keep at it with the routine as it works.

I had huge achililes problems after a road ride to paris and back, it came up on the way back and I had a ferry/people to meet so strapped it up and kept on going… Probably not a good idea. Took me a good 3 months to get over it, and 6 months before the it dissapeared completely. I think it kept coming back as I never quite left it long enough to recover before I got back in the saddle. Eventually left it a month doing nothing and finally it got better. I can still feel it 'click'when stretching sometimes..;(

Hmm… maybe more riding and a munro next weekend isn't such a hot idea then, Zuke's experiences sound like a lot of minor strains/sprains I've tried to ignore in the past.
