Does anyone know of a 23″ hardtail frame.
I have a 21″ on one scandal 29er but with a 400mm seatpost at max its not quite big enough and I’m bending down to far to reach the bars.
I dont want to have one hand made unless its a dam good price.
    Any ideas please ??

look for something old. I had a Raleigh Montage that size in the ’80s, nice frame made of 501 throughout. Wish I’d never got rid of it.

Plenty of people make them now.

I assume you’re on a 29er as that’ll suit your height better (generally – each to their own).

I have a 23″ Spesh Rockhopper 29er and it’s fine but then i also have a selection of other bikes ranging from 20″ to 24″. My actual inside leg is around 39/40″ and i’m fine on most 21″ bikes although my 20″ is a tad too short in the seat tube with a 410mm post.

Trek, Specialized, Cube etc all do bikes in up to 23″ sizing so it’s not a massive problem to find one (although arranging a test ride is a different proposition).

If you’re anywhere near the midlands you’re welcome to throw a leg over mine to try.

Ive seen the specialised but they dont supply just the frame. I dont want a whole bike just the frame. I have a 21″ 29er but not big enough to be comfortable on long rides. Thanks to the first suggustion but needs to be modern and take discs and suspension forks.

Have a look on the Triton Cycles website at the Salsa and Surly frames.

Salsa go to 22″ frames (my full suss is a 22″ Salsa) and the Surly Ogre goes up to a 24″.

More stem spacers and/or a higher rise stem may also help with raising the front end (and higher rise bars as well if you run flats).

How tall are you by the way??

Already run a riser bar and raised stem. Am only 6-3ft but have long legs.
I have seen the surly and at the moment they are my only option. The big boys (specialised etc )go up to 23 but only as a whole bike option.

Giant do, er.. giant frames – 23″ size. I’m pretty sure that Spesh do some too. And Cube.

A quick google on “23inch mtb” brought up loads.

Now seen your post about you being short 😉

Won’t a 23″ frame mean that it’s then too long for you given that your upper body must be relatively short? I’m 6’5″ and I find 23″ bikes silly big. YMMV of course.

You’d think but I’m lanky with long gorilla arms lol.

I’ve seen a couple of 23″ 29er frames on ebay over the last year. If you’re patient then something will turn up.

Canyon may also do a 22″ frame only option if you have a look?

The 23″ Konas were pretty big, haven’t looked into their 29ers but really got on with a 23″ demo bike I took out once. XXL Specialized are 23″ too, their XL are pretty big too though.

Riding a Scandal 29er with a 410mm Thomson seatpost here, 6’6″. Few spacers under the stem and a 40mm riser bar, but I’ve got on ok with it. To be honest, the front end is 20mm higher using 100mm Rebas than it was with the old rigids on anyway which raises it a bit.

I normally get shafted by short top tubes though, so I may be a bit more monkey proportioned.

Am only 6-3ft but have long legs.

Are you sure you’re not going to go the opposite direction and end up with too big a bike? If you have huge long legs, you must have a shorter torso, so shouldn’t be too hunched over.

I’m amazed that you’re too big for a 21″ Scandal seeing as i used to have a 21″ Inbred and it was fine.

As Clubber mentions above, the 23″ Rockhopper i have i sometimes think is a bit too big and i could have a smaller frame.

My legs are almost certainly longer than yours and my armspan finger tip to fingertip is a frankly ridiculous 7ft so i very much doubt (for your sake!!) that your arms are any longer? Must just be down to the personal differences of what is comfortable for you compared to others of a similar or taller height.

There was a thread on here the other day about that american company starting up for tall riders and they can do you a lovely 36″ wheeled bike with 220mm cranks and 250mm discs if you fancy one. Titanium only so it’s bound to be really cheap…. 😉

Would it work out affordable to sell your bike/frame and replace with a full bike? Or buy a full new bike and immediately strip it and sell all the bits to offset the cost? a £600 Rockhopper would probably enable you to get back at least £200 for the bits and then £100 for the Scandal so it’s only £300 to get the new frame?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I’ve got something to go with now. The surly salsa route looking good.
    Thanks again.

My Kona Unit came as a frame-only option and goes up to 22″, as do many Konas, despite the fact not being advertised on their website.

You’re welcome to try for size if you’re near Plymouth.

I’m bending down to far to reach the bars.

My experience of On-One frames is that the headtubes are stupidly short.

earl – what is your standover height? If you really are 4″ shorter than me with longer legs you are one freaky MF and I’d want to see a photo! Also – what do you have for a bar/stem combo? I had lots of spacers under the stem and some wide riser bars on my Scandal.
If you’ve got long arms, that should offset the seat height thing as well – have you got a stiff back as well?

I am 6ft 4 with long legs .I ride a 20 inch inbred with a 450mm seatpost all the way up and find myself in a similar situation to the op regarding many frames just not being big enough. My arm span is 6ft 7 and I thought that was freaky enough!!

I’m 6ft 4, and had a 23″ rock hopper, which was kinda large, just sold it for under £30 on eBay! Gone on to a 20″ Boardman, which is just about same length TT, but with almost 4″ more stand over! Just need some 120mm forks for it now.

I’d get on ebay and look for one of those huge specialized frames coming up used

Watch out for Trek and make sure that you understand the difference between the frame size and virtual frame size

Finally how about a longer post and stem which points up? Oh and hamstring stretches
