Lenzerheide WC DH – Atherton and Minnaar triumph. VIDEO

An hugely eventful Lenzerheide World Cup at the weekend saw Rachel Atherton and Greg Minnaar take the top spot on a course which way its fair share of carnage:

The UK’s Rachel Atherton’s victory was hard fought – Emmeline Ragot and Manon Carpenter gave her a run for her money – the former conceding defeat following an overcooked jump, a heavy landing and valuable seconds lost. Manon Carpenter has had a run of bad luck recently – crashes and disqualifications have seen her out of the running. The weekend’s run was something of a return to form.

The Women’s top three was Atherton, Carpenter and Tracey Hannah.

Greg Minnaar’s winning run saw him triumph in the face of opposition from Loïc Bruni and Dean Lucas in second and third respectively. In winning, Greg managed to bag for himself the most World Cup wins – beating team-mate Steve Peat by one.

Gee Atherton managed fifth, and Danny Hart seventh. Josh Bryceland knackered his thumb during morning practice in what was far from the only misadventure on the day.

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.
