Whole Enchilada will still be snowed in at the top at this time of year – you may get lucky and be able to get a shuttle to Upper Porcupine Singletrack

The Whole of Mag7 and then down the portal at the end is a great ride to do at this time of year – its a long one though

Hymasa and Captain Ahab is a great ride (Even better coming down Ahab at Night)

The trails up at DinoFlow are really nick singletrack trails , pipe dreams got some of narrowest singletrack , navajo rocks figure of 8 is great.

Take your lights and ride slick rock trail at night – its a hoot – plus no one  will see your walk of shame up the really steep bits with your limited 1x gearing….

Trailforks and MTB project have all the trails in GPX format

Dont foget to head over to fruita / Grand junction for more singletrack trails

loads of pics etc from previous trip on my site http://www.mtb-hol.com (Not updated it in the last few years though)

when did BA introduce the you have phone  up and let them know your taking a bike ?

Sure that when i booked our flights to usa last year for a trip this sept that wasnt on the terms and conditions for sporting goods

Another reason to avoid flying with BA – only flying with them this time to get direct flights to Washington and then back from denver

fyi – even though wiggle said the “Fox Suspension 36 Float Performance Elite Forks 27.5 150mm 15qr 27.5” they are selling were not boost the one that arrived today is boost – all you get is a fork and 110 quick release in a brown box – that’s really in not up to the job of protecting the fork in transit – got a chip down near the axle where fork had gone through box. Not sure if i can be bothered with hassle of sending back – as even with the chip its still a good buy at £419 , and i can get myself a converter to use my current 100 mm wheel

and these are non boost allegedly – just bought a pair @£419 from wiggle – will find out if they have told the truth soon – of course as their not boost the trail wont come alive at all while riding on them 8-)

“Wouldn’t 11-40T be really gappy? As in, massive gaps between gears?”

Its only the top 2 gears with the big gaps – and to be honest by the time your using those gears its more about wanting to get up a steep hill rather than wanting to change gears rapidly

I’m just happy to be able to carry on using my old 9 speed stuff with the larger 27.5″ wheels

The cassette also weighs a lot less than the only shimano option for a larger 9 speed cassette  i.e. the deore 11-36 boat anchor – which also wrecks cassettes as its made up of individual rings.

Ridden 42 miles so far still and still shifting ok with a old xtr m960 rear mech

T”hose cut outs are ridiculous. What have they saved 10g?
    Stupid design.”

I had another epi before this which broken exactly the same place – but that one was still under warranty

It was a ridiculous design – i’d never buy another ellsworth – but i’d still like to get it fixed as it didn’t ride too bad and i’ve got some tapered 26″ QTR forks which are only good to work with this frame

“Is there a sticker on the frame saying what alloy it’s made of? I think ideally, 6000 stuff needs heat treating after welding but 7000 doesn’t.”

All  I’ve found is marketing guff which says

    Drawn Seamless Aerospace grade Aluminum

“Low bottom gears are very useful.”

Totally agree with you , rode 21 hilly miles in snow / slush and mud at surrey hills and having a nice easy gear made the ride fun – rather than a suffer fest –   I only spun out out once and had to push once and that was due to ice on a very steep section no way i would have got up the last hill with out my 22×40 with those 27.5 wheels if i’d still been running 11-32 cassette

Plus when I head out of a 3 week bike trip to places like Colorado and i’m doing 21 days of back to back riding at altitudes up to 12500 ft I need a mega low gear to be able to ride as much as possible without exhausting myself

Its going to be a right bugger when I run out of bikes which can take a front mech…

The XTR m960 cage definitely needed goatgoat  otherwise the jockey wheels were not clearing the 40 tooth ring

Regards mudguard id rather have  a nice clean dry arse, rather than being a fashion victim with a cold muddy wet arse – or have to buy water proof shorts to support mud guard functionality denial…

    “Seriously…?”

Yes – i prefer to ride up all hills rather than pushing , my mates are often pushing their 1x rigs up steep techy hills while i spin up em, faster than them pushing

“Just get a plate welded over the top of the plate drill the shock mount hole out and use a longer bolt.”

Any ideas as to where to go to get a plate welded over ?

Nope Im not riding it anymore, It make a nasty cracking noise when you ride- plus there are other cracks heading up towards the top as well on the other side

Do the black ones end up having the black worn away exposing the steel / alu underneath ?

Anyone tried the 9 speed 11-40 ? – I just took a punt on one with an extender,  to go with an old xtr 9 speed groupset which i want to use on a 27.5″ bike i’ve just got

Santacruz Heckler 27.5″ – the last model before they discontinued making them

Its going to be my winter mud plugging bike, while my Bronson CC remains all snug in the dry

I’ll post a pic once i’ve put all my bits on it

    I’m guessing it was either

    1) “see it’s a bike going to a big office block, pretend it’s delivered, stash it somewhere for a while and see if anyone raises a fuss (big office block someone will assume it’s lost in the building somewhere), hang on to it if they don’t deliver if they do.”

    2) “I bet the thing was stuck in a warehouse somewhere, forgotten?”

There were a few chips in paint on frame not declared on the ebay listing – but after all the hassle actually getting the bike i couldn’t be bothered to raise that with the seller.

I stripped the bike completely down to frame last night and its all ok – now waiting for Sunrace 11-40 9 speed cassette & goat link so i can transfer my old 9 speed XTR group set over onto it, need the bigger cassette as old bike was 26″, and the new one is 27.5 which would make spinning up hills too much effort with a 11-32 cassette.

“If it’s under £750 the seller isn’t required to get a signature.”

Luckily  or is it unluckily  for me the bike was over £750 and the seller has said he sent it via signed for delivery – but Hermes took no signature according to their site- so if it does not turn up i should get my money back via ebay route

I managed to find a live chat i could use on the Hermes site as a receiver (seller did get back to me and say he had also contacted Hermes and asked me to do the same – He must have realized that a delivery with no signature to a closed building is not going to end up with ebay siding with him)- but I am having to wait 22 hours for them to get back to me as the live chat could not help for missing delivery – my issue was passed onto a different dept.

Id rather have the bike than the money back..

    Hi Northwind

Thanks for info, as you seem to know about this stuff

    ebay site is saying this

“If you don’t hear back or can’t sort something out with the seller, you can ask us to step in beginning Jan. 17.”

do you have to wait that long ? , where does paypay protection fit in with all of this ?

Id really like to have the bike as it was one i’ve always wanted to have,” but i have bad feeling about this….”

“Ask to see the photographic evidence. It might help you track it down if you recognise the building”

Well no sign of it at any of the surrounding buildings receptions- went as far as to check behind bins and hedges around building as well

Now waiting for ebay seller to get back to me

Parcel2go / Hermes wont interact with me as i’m just the receiver

finger crossed it does turn up , read that you can have issue with ebay not refunding as they take couriers saying they have delivered as proof you have received the goods..

I’ve been hunting around on the web and have found some sites selling replacements – but not found any instructions on how to take em of and fit new ones.. – Anyone know where to look ?

Place i bought them from has asked me to send the shoes back to them to check if they can be warrantied

You just cant get the same ratios with 1x,

I’m running 32 / 22 with and 11-42 cassette – ready for a trip out to Colorado – i usually run a  11-40 , And I know whose going to be riding up more hills on that trip compared to mates with 1x…….

I’m sure someones going to chime in your going to slow with that ratio 22 x 42 , but its a mountain bike your supposed to be riding it not pushing it up hills, and i still mange to ride past peeps pushing their bikes up hills

But the industry does seem hell bent on getting rid of front mechs, I got lucky when my mk1 bronson broke a few weeks ago as i got a mk2 which still has a hanger – but even then i now need to get a boost rear wheel (My wheels are all centre lock so cant convert to boost), and new dropper post (shims arnt recommended in carbon bronson)

Must do something about all the 26″ wheels i have hanging up in my garage though, as frames dont last forever and i’m down to just 1  working 26″ MTB frame now – are XTR based 9 speed wheels going like hot cakes on ebay ?

    zinger
    Free Member

nope that my other bronson !!!

I liked my bronson mk1 so much that when i saw a frame in a sale after the mk2 was released , i bought it as a spare 8-)

It made sense to do this to me as i have a load of non boost wheels and 30.9 seatposts as well

Surely everyone has a spare bronson in their front room , just in case their main Bronson breaks

    zinger

Well I cut up the old Bronson

And a few days later this arrived

    zinger
    Free Member

as well as the small cracks around the bolt (where the insert fro the bolt was debonding, there was a small crack opening up on the flat bit above the bolt hole

I’m going to feel bad when i kill her this weekend, I’m now  a serial Bronson killer as i had to do the same with my first Bronson 3 years ago  (Although that did have a much bigger crack)

Got to say again though you cant beat the warranty on SantaCruz – I remember the bad old days when i had an Ellsworth – what your main triangle has cracked ? – pay us £800 for a rear triangle !!

Thanks for all the info – sounds like i will be buying some reserves !!
