Am I the first to spot this?

Or have I just missed the joke?

    Edit:

Actually on re-reading – yes I clearly have… as you were.

Not specifically UK but this was the closest I found to STW when researching what SUP to get a couple of years ago:

Hard to begrudge the Scottish team (or fans) their celebration after that win…particularly given it generally only comes around once a decade…

I agree with AA – all the Ford / Farrell bashing is misplaced imo.  The best flyhallf / centre partnership won’t make any difference if you can’t cross the gain line and get turned over after 5 phases.

The fact that we’ve been consistently exposed by teams with decent 7s since the world cup should have given us a clue where we needed to look…

    Thoughts from an England fan:

Well played Scotland – a good win in which England never really looked like coming close.

No real complaints about the reffing – particularly given we definitely had all the luck last game…Ar<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>guably a few 50/50 decisions didn’t go our way but in rugby the team that’s going forward and playing better often gets the rub of the green.</span>

We were destroyed at the breakdown – not only in terms of turnovers but also in decision making, when to commit numbers in both attack and defence.  Scotland either didn’t contest and had lots of defenders to hit the next tackle or did and invariably turned us over.  One of the most worrying aspects is that this was the same in the Welsh game – our back row was consistently out performed and looked unbalanced and slow.  We do have some talented 2nd row in England at the moment but pretending their actually decent flankers just because the economics of the EP leads them to play in that position is a conceit that’s consistently exposed at international level.

I think our bench was stronger, arguably our best period of attacking play was in the last 15 with only 14 men but the yellow card (Underhill nor Simmonds TJ) negated any advantage this might have brought.

I’m fairly ambivalent about BG but for those struggling with why climbers are bothered here’s the rough equivalent in mountain biking terms:

Opening shot is BG running up to the top of the Red Bull Rampage site in Zion National park Utah with a 1998 Marin Nail Trail on his shoulder leaping like a young gazelle from dusty gully to cliff edge.

Next shot he talks to camera whilst sitting on his bike at the top about how he just likes to get out and challenge himself on a ride – as the camera pans out to reveal the panorama you notice he’s using 1.9 Panracer Fire XC tyres and the logos and valves aren’t even aligned.

He starts of down the trail – cut to BG doing a superman over the 72ft canyon gap. You don’t see the take off and if you know what you’re looking for you can just make out the harness and wire that’s suspending him from the crane but it’s well done particularly as Bear (no helmet, locks billowing in the wind) turns to the camera and gives a cheeky wink.

Finally we see him land (sitting down, rear wheel first – logo and valves still misaligned) and it’s obvious to the initiated that both he and the bike are suspended from above but again to the casual viewer looks pretty good.

Your 9 year old nephew tells you that BG is a much better rider than Danny M / Petey / Brendog / insert favourite rider.

Some good AP games this weekend- Leicester Quins had some decent tries. Having said that May squandered a great break from Veainu with a poor pass off his left hand – I don’t think there’re many All Black (or to fair welsh?) wingers that can’t pass off their left hand?

Only saw the highlights but the Bath Newcastle game also looked good with a great away win for Falcons.

That Marler Haskell thing is hysterical and tragic all at once.

Agreed – makes me a little nostalgic for the bad old days; you can’t imagine the same scenario between Dallagio and Leonard…

A bit of niggle / handbags in the Quins Wasps game between Marler and Haskell leading to a yellow for Haskell – all a bit embarrassing really.

    Good game so far otherwise…

Does anyone else think the refereeing of the breakdown (particularly rucks) has been really inconsistent in AP this weekend?

I know it’s early days in term of the law changes but both players and referees seem to be unclear on what’s required – Friday’s game was possibly the worst with players yards offside but all 4 games I’ve seen have had examples of inconsistent reffing.

On a separate point I also think Schalk Brits was right to feel hard done by when he gave away a penalty after the Bath the scrum half deliberately passed the ball into him – that’s really negative rugby that shouldn’t be rewarded imo.

Agree – I thought the med team were supposed to review the video footage if there was any hint of a head injury?

Good win for Bath – Roko was clearly saving himself for the final 3 min…

Bath got the better deal out of the FH swap based on the start of the season.

Leicester looking really poor in both matches so far although a little harsh to blame Ford given his forwards got badly beaten in both games…

Nice individual try from May at the end of the Saints / Leicester game probably the only consolation for Leicester?

Dunno, I watched the Sale game first so it is a feast of rugby blessed by the almighty in my opinion

Duckers – watching all of the Sale / Newcastle game when you have the option to fast forward shows either a purist devotion to the game or extreme masochistic tendencies; which is it?

Thanks for the responses everyone – looks like it’s worth investing in new calipers.

A quick google suggests M8000 calipers are compatible with M785 levers; has anyone done this?

It’s a well known issue with shimano brakes – they’ll replace them if it happens within the 2 year warranty period.

It’s not cleaning (I rarely do that on the singlespeed!) – it seems to occur after longish (months) periods of lack of use.

My question is whether it’s still happening or whether they’ve resolved the issue – I suspect not…

I once asked a new girl at work who was sat at an adjacent computer, in a tightly packed temporary office, if she was a mountain biker after glimpsing our similarly scarred arms out of the corner of my eye.

“No – why?” was the somewhat confused reply at which point I looked properly and realised her scars were less numerous but considerably deeper…

I think I got away with a confusing mumble in response.

]Seems to me that you are best served by staying out of any waters where the US Navy operates, given their habit of crashing into things.

The US Navy is the biggest in the world by some margin and operates world wide. Collisions, groundings and fires happen at sea every day somewhere in the world, some will be as a result of human error, some mechanical failure, some adverse weather conditions; most will be a combination of all 3.

It’s very difficult to speculate, even with the aid of Google, what was the exact cause in this case particularly as you clearly know FA about how ships in general, and warships in particular, operate. So how about leaving off the mockery until you know “stupidity” was the cause?

There will be a Court Martial at which all the facts come out; additionally given the ship’s company dealt with major flooding, including within an engine room at night, and successfully kept the ship afloat I’d be surprised if there weren’t some individual acts of heroism which received bravery awards.

He’s merely pointing out that the US Navy deaths are in all likelihood due to a catastrophic cock up, and like all cock ups in history, will be subject to a certain amount of ridicule. Such is life.

What a catastrophic cock up like putting (in all probability) flammable cladding on a heavily populated tower block equipped with inadequate fire detection, fire escape and fire fighting equipment?

So is it ok to make jokes about how poor Kensington council (or who ever’s found to be responsible) is at fire safety regulation? Because I don’t think it is, particularly in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy before all the facts are known.

I don’t know what caused these 7 deaths (although it’s unlikely to be a “massive cock up” but more a series of small errors and failures – human error, Nav radar failure, steering gear breakdown; all happen regularly at sea but usually without consequence) but piss taking based on the ill informed assumptions on this thread is very poor form imo.

In 26 years at sea I’ve lost one shipmate and more colleagues to collisions, groundings and fires – the sea is still a dangerous environment; I don’t think they or the ships, Navies or shipping lines they served in deserve ridicule particularly when you don’t have a clue what happened.

I do know that being woken by a huge shuddering crash and finding you’re trapped with waters flooding your mess deck is not a particularly pleasant death.

The victims in the Grenfell fire were helpless civilians who died because their homes were turned into a firetrap to save some money. The warship was crewed by highly trained professional sailors operating some of the most advanced technology on the planet. Yes, sad for the families of the dead, but FFS, if the US Navy can’t steer a ship around a 30 000 tonne cargo ship, they deserve some ridicule.

So which victims of accidental death is it ok to mock hols2; can you provide a list because I do tend to lose track?

Is it just military personnel or is it anyone whose job has an element of risk – police officers, fire service, paramedic?

What about those that voluntarily take part in dangerous hobbies – climbers, sky divers, rugby players, skiers?

Finally what about those that cycle (some without helmets!) through dangerous city centres and on country lanes without cycle paths; surely they’re equally deserving of your mockery if they’re accidentally killed by the actions of others?

Just caught up on this thread after being away for a while…

IGM – I think you’re a little confused on the definition of a spear tackle:

    igm – Member

Dan, either you think it was a spear tackle or you think it was a tip tackle. It’s very difficult to lift the legs (tip) without using the arms – practically impossible. So you can’t tip and spear. It’s the lack of objective observation that makes me pity some on here. (I’ll put a smiley in at this point – but it only applies to the last sentence)

A spear tackle doesn’t imply not using the arms (that’s a shoulder charge or “no arms tackle”) it’s rather an extension of the tip tackle in that the tackler picks the tackled player up (using his arms!) and spears him head first into the deck, normally also twisting him so he lands on a shoulder or neck; clearly very dangerous and rightly banned.

The tackle in question was not a spear tackle imo but was (just) late and an example of what happens when a bigger player poorly executes a tackle on a smaller player i.e. a penalty and yellow card in todays game or a “good hit” 10 years ago.

TJ – I think you’re being a tad over sensitive about Jamba’s comment – in many years of playing I don’t think I ever made a tackle where I wasn’t trying to hurt the other guy ; not maim him or put him off the park but I definitely wanted him to know he’d been hit.

It reminds of the old apocryphal tale:

Son: “Dad I don’t want to play rugby I don’t want to get hurt”

Dad: “Don’t worry son rugby’s not about getting hurt, it’s about hurting other people…”

Two really close and entertaining games this weekend; if we can find (train / select or get fit) a back row we (England) are going to be hard to beat.

I think if Scotland had a better bench they might just have edged their game.

That was all that sentence needed to be.

    POSTED 2 HOURS AGO #

Not sure I get all the Inverdale hate – he’s a nice bloke when you meet him in the flesh and was a pretty decent centre in his day. I played against him a couple of times and he was always very friendly, approachable and generous in the bar afterwards despite already being “on TV”.

I know he’s made a couple of unfortunate gaffes but I’m not convinced he deserves all the vitriol he receives.

Well we got away with that…

Did EJ pull it out of the bag with the timing of his replacements?

Lots of work to do – not sure Wood can keep his place? The MO at 6 experiment wasn’t a success – he looked a different player once he was back at lock?

Bottom line is we won’t win much if we keep getting beaten in the pack…

    tallie
    Free Member

We do look like a pack with a lot of players out of position… and no back row.

I’ll take 9-9 though particularly given the yellow card – hopefully the big French units will tire in the 2nd half…
