When you have cycled trough some woods on your own and stop for a drink or something. Just stand still and look around you. Your surroundings will stay as they are when you have gone.

Which pubs do you go to ?

Used daily contacts for a while , but found my eyes getting sore when it was dusty and lost a few when it was cold due to eyes watering, despite wearing cycling gigs as well.
Switched to some Oakley prescripions with the photochromic lenses – love ’em.

Not sure if your rims will take them , but on the touring bike- bike made for carrying panniers etc – I run 700 x 32

This might not be an issue – but have you looked to see if he height of your rack/panniers can be lowered ? If it’s too high the back will feel unbalanced.

    Are you upgrading everything ?

headset willmore than likely be an 1.1/8th inch

For the bottom bracket it depends on what type you will be fitting, which is dependant on what chainset/cranks you will be fitting.
Basically there are three types, all of which will fit your frame.
Square taper – for which you will need to measure the bottom bracket shell width and makesure you have the correct axle length for the cranks
Isis/octalink – needs to be measured same as above
X type (external bearings) most come in one size and use spacers to attain correct fit.

……and then I found this ….Orange FAQ sheet

our main, andpotentially most expensive, issue will be the forks – as cbmotorsport says – if the steerer is cut too short for the new frame your fubarred.

The seat post and seat clamp are the obvious ones.

Bottom bracket could be an issue depends,(if you’re using ISIS or external type) on if you have/havn’t got the right number of spacers if needed. If you are using a square taper BB you may need a new one all together.

You could also have an issue wih the front mech, dependant on make – most these days come with spacers (or you can get them easy enough).

Theres also a slight possibility that the rear (or front for that matter) brake hose may be too short/long. Long’snot much of an issue other than asthetics .

Last but no means least, you’ll probably need new cable and outers.

My tip would also be to completely strip the bike and clean all parts thoroughly before transferring. It’s tempting to whip off the stem, bars brakes, shifters etc. as one unit and try to fit them straight over – it can be done but stripping and cleaning is the way to go.
And don’t forget to wedge something between the disc pads during assembly.

    In no particular order ;

two squirrels hit my front wheel
chased by geese that got a bit too close at times
many close encounters with sheep (I’m a Yorkshireman wahay!!!)
badgers on more than one occasion (never hit one but had them running alongside and in front a few times )
most bizarre one was a shot pheasant that fellout of the sky and missed me by about two inches on the Bingley bash

Touring bike could be the answer – it’ll more than likely have a triple chainset and a wide spread of gears, and it’ll have bosses for (or maybe even come with)mudguards and panniers.

If my memory serves Caerphilly to Cardiff is 8-10miles dependant on route.A tourer lets you carry your clobber on the bike as opposed to your back and it will also be (provided you fit the right tyres) quite happy with a bit of off – road.

I use mine on an almost daily basis for a similar distance, and ok its not the fastest bike out there (engines not what it used to be either) but its very, very nice to ride and with the panniers and racks it doesn’t matter what I need to take to and from work its more than capable of carrying the load.

Whatever you decide full mudguards are (IMO) a must – they’llkeep you drier and the bike cleaner.

A couple of spare spokes won’t take up much room and could make all the difference. Tape them to the chainstay or stuff them up your seat pin (don’t forget to bung something in to stop them rattling etc)- you might need a couple of different lengths, either that or get a couple of these – emergency spoke
As for the wonkier wheel – patience and practice

…and , check out the Kona Sutra – steel touring bike with full rack mounts etc. I love mine and ride it nearly every day not just for touring.

Depends if you are more on or off road and if off road what you will be riding.
A well built wheel and decent tyres is more important than the size IMO – touring wheels will have more spokes than most wheels to help carry the extra weight.
I’ve toured round Scotland a few times mixing both road and trails (fireroads etc rather than full on mtb tracks) on 700cc wheels with no problems.
That said I used a 26″ hardtail with semi slick tyres to tour round Cuba a few years back and that was fine too.

I’ve got a Kona Sutra – great bike. Use it for commuting and touring, both on and off road. I’ve done quite a few off road rides with it and it’s fine – ok it’snot a mountain bike and wouldn’t want to ride it down Cut Gate or at a trail centre – but it’s more than capable for the majority of trails you’d use when touring.

Not the fastest or lightest bike out there, but it rides like a dream and comes with all the racks straight out the box.

I’ve got a Blackburn Airstick that lives in the seat pack of the commuter(700c wheels) – ok,it’s not as good as a larger pump but for it’s size it’s very impressive and is more than good enough to get you on your way. That said I wouldn’t want to use it for pumping up mountain bike tyres.
To stickin the jumper pocket for short off road rides I use Crank Bro’s power pump – again it’s ok,will get your tyres up to a decent pressure fairly easily.

For the camelback/panniers you can’t beat,IMO, Topeak Mountain Morph – tough and very easy to use for both mountain bike and road tyres.

Thinking about this – I’ve also got a Mini Mountain Morph a frame fit pump, 2 x track pumps, and at least 2 more mini pumps. 😯 ❓ Anyone want to buy a pump ?

I was going to pass comment and make a suggestion – but I’m feeling a bit fragile and dont think I could bear the wrath.

Moralof the story – learn to fix your own bike (it’s not complicated, it’s a bicycle)

depends if your running 26″ 29″ 700cc or 650b wheels ? Bigger wheels cover more distance for less revolutions etc.

Of course you would then have to factor in tyre choice and pressure – slick tyres high pressure = fast rolling less resistance etc.

130,000 miles is approx’ 10,000 hours worth of cycling for someone with decent level of fitness (of course terrain and wind play a big part etc.)

    Oh it’s a car ! Sorry I thought we were on a mountain bike/ cycling forum !!!! 🙄
