Are you soluble? Buy a brolly.

Thanks, but i’ve got enough to carry as it is.

Why would you be carrying bags when you’ve got a perfectly serviceable trolley right in front of you?

    There’s no helping the stupid.

Ok, talk me through how this works with a toddling 2 year old and a one year old.

Seriously, from door through to returning the trolley

I agree! I’m also very very important and these 15 minute periods of free-for-all make me very upset too. It means I have to be particularly careful around schools at certain times of day and sometimes I have to drive slowly. On occasion I’m even delayed!

@Project – thanks for the tip regarding talc, will give that a go tonight!

Talc doesn’t deter them so much, but you can see where they’ve been and sometimes follow them back to their nest.

You won’t be able to run along side nit, not near by at all. There’s plenty of people dressed in grey to push you away.

Us clever chaps are dressing in grey to overcome this barrier

So teaching kids in classes appropriate to their ability doesn’t benefit the kids or the teachers?

I was once in a similar situation a few years ago, had the rug pulled out from under me andended up owing a few people a similar sums. The problem is your first reaction is to look after you and yours. Yes i owed money, but i didn’t have it imonew it was killing my reputation, but i couldn’t breing myself to send off £200 quid which i owed, knowing that this would just get me deeper and deeper into trouble. It didn’t end well.

Will I be shot down in flames for pointing out that cheating on the T&Cs is basically theft from the company and at very least immoral?

Is charging different prices for journies which are essentailly the same immoral?

Of course you have to buy the second one day return from the other side. Otherwise when you don’t turn up for your outward journey, they will cancel your return

What? Page two and no jokes about losing 250 lb on the diet?

However given the excellent recent reviews with lots of people seeming to have lost lots and lots of pounds and apparently, not regaining them

    No need to duck

Well, i’ve been following iDave diet discussions for a long time now, always been slightly sceptical, in no small measure influenced by edukator. Have been trying to work out if it is any more than a low carb diet with some days off., or perhaps really just a more out tha n in calorie balance. Seems it was a weight loss programme for tubbies and less for slighter chaps looking to tone up. As a fatty myself i have followed the mixed reviews with interest. However given the excellent recent reviews with lots of people seeming to have lost lots and lots of pounds and apparently, not regaining them, as is common with some diets. I reckon i’ll be taking it on. How do i contact this iDave fella?does he have an email address?

How do we explain slow/slower? Why not slowwer?

We? well, I’d probably go for the “Doesn’t have a vowel sound” defence

Of course it’s acceptable but it’s the exception and not the rule, that is to clarify any ambiguity

The code is more what you’d call “guidelines” than actual rules. But abbreviations are OK with an apostrophe, especially if they serve to clarify. so they are OK normally, but even more so when they serve o clarify.

no, not a English teacher, but I was taught by one, so if you need any other help with the language, please just ask.

Well, at a guess, single syllable (edit), ending as -vc, then double the last letter.

    fat – fatter
    hot – hotter
    red – redder

    seems to fit

    fit – fitter

I’m not sure i understand the question, big->bigger is not a special case. Are you asking why that particular rule exists?

    SamCooke

These are generally called exceptions, aren’t they?

perhaps so, but they are still acceptable

but about ‘big’ can you clarify?

I’m not sure i understand the question, big->bigger is not a special case. Are you asking why that particular rule exists?

    SamCooke

Well, they are abbreviations and some find the use of the apostrophe in the pluralisation of abbreviations to be acceptable, especially when they serve to clarify.

With regard to big, you need to clarify in response to my question.

    I’ll let the their / they’re pass shall I?

    SamCooke

While you’re here, could you explain why we double the “g” in big when using the comparative bigger?

As already stated there are modern day accepted uses, so I’m still strugggling to see your point.

Well, MP’s and HGV’s might then be acceptable

    SamCooke

The grammatical function of the apostrophe is to demonstrate possession or contraction and that a letter(s) is/are missing. Not the plural.

But those are not its only functions. It can also be used to pluralise letters and word references.

The sevens were just an extension of the How many a’s task.

Daleks would win everytime, hands down

I think I see a flaw in your reasoning

    SamCooke

The plural of Member of Parliament is Members of Parliament and the plural abbreviation is MPs.

    so say you.

MP is not a word but a word reference. In this case the apostrophe serves to clarify the plural of the abbreviation. The rule of apostrophes is not as simple as many imagine. If you wanted to know how many times the letter a appeared in a sentence. How would you phrase it?

How many as are in this sentence?
How many a’s are in this sentence?

    etc

What if i wanted to know how many were graded 7s and how many were graded 7?

    like – there were three 7s and 4 7ss?
