I recently stayed in Las Vegas with a friend of mine who is a realtor there. Their system is more expensive – he said it costs around 7% of the house price to move – but it makes so much more sense. The realtor is responsible not only for the sale/purchase of a property, but all the legal/financial aspects too. Basically they do everything that an estate agent/solicitor do for you in one go. The best thing of all is that they don’t get paid until the sale is successful and everyone has moved in, so it’s in their interest to make things as quick and simple as possible for everyone.

I understand there has to be problems in the USA with their system and they won’t think it’s perfect but it seems light years better than our system.

I would go with the green but paint the forks the same colour if possible. Then it would look original but custom at the same time.

If you wanted to keep a more traditional retro look with modern kit try to get as much stuff in silver to attach to it. May not be possible with a dropper (although you can strip the anno easily) but it’d be a nice look.

Nice idea on the dropper post – well done!

Sometimes original looks great…… but a modernised Kona is an excellent bike – the reason why they still attract a premium price depsite being 20yo!

    My restored original Kilauea:

Another bike I did, Eat My Dirt Ninja Cleaner Team Issue Kona Hahanna, with modern bits and colour coded for the company (you have no idea how hard it is to find green bits!):

This is the main reason why moving house is one thing that scares me witless and probably why I’ve been in the same house for 13 years!

Sounds like a nightmare situation, hope it’s sorted soon.

Dinner would be an informal affair with a few heads of state and captains of industry to whom i would refer as bell ends throughout

That is the best thing I’ve read this week! Genius!

Meh, possibly a bargain, possibly not. Crappy pics didn’t help. After reading Robdob’s RB link though to get that into the state it was in to make me drool; I started to question costs.

Most of it is time and effort to be honest, not cash. I lavished a lot on mine because I know I will never sell it. I have a lot of unnecessary expense that others could miss out. NOS thumbshifters/chainset and pauls levers aren’t cheap (£170 for those 3 bits)! Total cost was around £850 but I didn’t have wheels (£150).

Hand polishing the rear mech took 4 hours!

“There is no amount of money which would stop me helping someone live, no matter how slim their chances. I don’t know how anyone can live with themselves doing anything else.”
And you have been at 8000 metres+ on Everest I assume.
    Nope?
Then how about qualifying things a touch.
The reason why I suggested that this thread avoid the moral side is that the world is filled with those who have brilliant things to say (they think) without first hand experience of the situation.
Of course I do apologise if I am posting to a experienced 8000 metre climber who has had things go terribly wrong.

Maybe that’s where we differ then. I’d rather die trying than not bother to help.

I too am amazed by the amount of pedestrians who just simply don’t look when crossing a road. I can excuse it in a town centre where the traffic may be slow moving but elsewhere it’s just weird. When I drive into my street I am doing a reasonable speed, turning left with a signal. Half the time I turn in there will be a pedestrian at or approaching closely the kerb. Half of those won’t look AT ALL and react with such amazement/anger/complete indifference when I appear and give them a quick blip on the horn. I am never going to run them over but maybe If I jolt them out of their sleep they might look next time when there is someone pulling in who hasn’t seen them and/or is going twice the speed.

That’s my Kilauea in the OP. It probably isn’t a good idea to tell you how much it cost to restore!

Francys Arseniev, an American women who fell while descending with a group (that included her husband), pleaded with passerby’s to save her. While climbing down the side of a steep section of the mountain, her husband noticed she was missing. Knowing that he did not have enough oxygen to reach her and return to base camp, he chose to turn back to find his wife anyway. He fell to his death in the attempt to climb down and reach his dying wife.

That would be my story – I would go back. Wouldn’t even hesitate.

mrlebowski – the question is, would you happily pay tens of thousands in order to make an attempt on the summit but abandon it in order to try and save somebody’s life? Because for me that would be the reality – I don’t think reaching the summit could be so important. Clearly for most people who go up the summit is more important than it would be for me…

There is no amount of money which would stop me helping someone live, no matter how slim their chances. I don’t know how anyone can live with themselves doing anything else.

My brother has had this bike for sale in the classifieds:

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/marin-san-anselmo-good-cheap-commuter

If I was in the market for one I’d buy it from him as I know it’ll be set up better than a new bike! Lots of steerer to adjust height of front end and has proper mudguards on it already. I reckon its a bargain.

Wouldn’t put me off straight away, generally you redecorate a house anyway when you move in. I wouldn’t pay extra to keep the carpets though. Only thing that is fixed as such is the bedroom wardrobe doors, kitchen and bathroom are white. Looks like a nicely looked after house really!

How long are you supposed to charge them for? And how to charge/discharge? Anything I should be doing?

Well I would do it but I can’t find anything I need to get out on my bike, spent an hour searching for stuff so I’ve missed the train. So now I HAVE to find my lights but they’ve disappeared as well.

When I worked in a big DIY store the best prices were all around Easter time as that was peak season. You’d rarely sell off anything unless told to by head office as the models don’t change much every year, especially the petrol models. A Hayter model is unlikely to be discounted I would have thought.
I would say keep a look out in Jan/Feb as the mower displays are reinstated as the shops will get a better idea what they’ll be stocking in 2014 so anything no longer sold might have some money off then. I wouldn’t hold out too long though if you need one.

Could you clad the fire door the same as the rest of the shed so it disappears a little?

If you want to feel the trail come alive, simply ziptie a large, angry badger to your seat tube. You can’t get much more alive than that

    Now that’s a video I’d watch!

I have raised my dispute to a PayPal claim as FastTech haven’t bothered responding to anything in the resolution centre.
If i am refunded and the lights arrive I will offer to send them back if they pay for postage, only fair.
Need the money now to buy some other lights, not just paying for the hope I might get some!

10sp cassette is IIRC actually slightly narrower than 9sp so you might need a tiny spacer on your free hub, but it will fit fine.
You will need a 10sp cassette, shifters, rear mech and chain. Front mech and chainset will probably be fine.

However considering how cheap you can get whole groupsets, for example from Ribble or Merlin cycles it’s probably best to buy a whole groupset in one go and sell what you have now. Working STI road shifters always sell very well for example.

It does depend when you are called though – I wouldn’t dismiss an offer just because it came out of the blue as occasionally they can be very good.
I was at the end of my contract with Orange and wanted a new iPhone 5. I found the best deal for the amount I wanted to pay for each month meant the phone cost £220. This was a very good deal at the time and I could sell my iPhone 4, add it to the cash back I was getting to mean it wouldn’t cost me anything to change. I rang up for a PAC code from orange and they did their best to keep me (very politely and they admitted they couldn’t match the one I was going to). A couple of days later I hadn’t used the PAC as I didnt have time to apply for the new contract but I got a call from Orange. The lady asked why I hadn’t used my PAC code (was very nice) and I explained the new contract to her. She ended up offering me the same monthly cost as my new contract, but the phone at only £90 and way more minutes and texts than I would have got with the contract I selected. It was miles better so – after a long discussion to ensure exactly what I wa saying yes to – I went for it. New phone arrived next day. Result!

Kev – if yours doesn’t arrive and mine does, you can have mine for the price I paid plus the cost of posting it to you if you want. I ordered 2 anyway for some weird reason.

Kevin – did the tracking, when it started, say it had left HK?

If so there must be something up with mine as the gap between ordering mine and the day they left is huge compared to yours. I ordered mine a week before you but yours have left HK a week before mine!

Just checked mine, they were posted on the 19th (took 4 days to post them). I just checked the tracking and they have only just left HK today apparantely. Not sure if this is true and it’s a coincidence I checked today or whether they’ve made it up!!

Ordered mine on the 15 October, nothing arrived yet. I have started a paypal dispute as hopefully it will perk them up, I can always make a claim on the cash in a couple of weeks if they don’t turn up.

.. and I would say if you can only afford Ni-Cad then stick with 12-14.4v as the 18v ones are very heavy – you don’t really need 18v for screwdriving duties and you’d be better investing in some quality screwdriving bits instead as they will be much nicer to use and last for decades if looked after.

Right – my real world advice!

The Worx stuff is very good for DIY. I used to work for Homebase and have tried loads of them. I don’t think they had quite the fine control of a Bosch DIY drill but the build quality was as good. You generally get 2 batteries which you don’t normally with Bosch. I think the Worx one would be better than a B+D one easily.

For all those folk telling him to spend loads on Makita etc, did you not notice the £50 budget requirement?

I used to advise people if they came in with a £100ish budget to buy a decent quality 12v cordless for screw driving tasks (I used a 12v Bosch for years and it never lacked power go screwdriving) and maybe £20-30 on a basic corded drill for drilling into brickwork. That would certainly be better than a £100 cordless only, which especially round here in W Yorks wouldn’t cope with drilling into stone.

Budget some money for quality drill bits and screwdriver bits too – I’d rather use high quality bits in a cheaper drill than the other way round every time.

The Bosch 12v one I had died last year (cost £50) and I bought a li-ion Bosch 18v cordless for £100, 3 day only offer from B and Q which I snapped up (2 batteries too!). Well worth the money as at the time you couldn’t buy them online for less that £140 with only 1 battery.

How could I forget Joe Kid on a Stingray? Essential viewing for all cyclists. Amazing history lesson into BMX. Even goes into mid-school BMX when I got into it, when there was no money at all – hear Dennis McCoys description of how the prizes changed when the money went. Every time I watch it and I hear Matt Hoffman talking about that period it chokes me up a bit and I have to go and ride!! “They were telling me BMX was dead – it’s my life and I wasn’t going to take it”. He organised the Bicycle Stunt Series with no money but it became a legendary thing and morphed into the X-games. Wonderful!
Also got Spike Jones in it, who started out working in a BMX shop as a kid.
