Bwaarp – I doubt that anyone seriously thinks that there will be a full scale invasion. However, it is still possible that the Argies may use cunning, guile and surprise to bring the UK to the negotiating table. The UK has lost the ability to think strategically – others have not. All the Argentineans need to do is to create a situation where the UK government is forced to participate in negotiations. A limited occupation of a a remote corner of the archipelago during the run-up to the Olympics will attract the sort of attention that the UK would be keen to avoid. As for 500lb JDAMs, and TLAMs….Using overwhelming force to kill such a small group would not endear the UK to the rest of the world. Attacking the South American mainland would make the UK an international pariah and rank us alongside N Korea, Burma, and Iran. In fact, it’s the sort of overreaction that should be avoided at all cost.  We may win the battles, but still lose the war. As Sun Tsu said, “Tactics without strategy is the sound before defeat.”

Military top trumps means very little.  History is full of examples of the weak defeating the strong. After all, the Taliban don’t look good on paper. Neither did the Vietcong, the Zulu, or the mujahideen.

We should avoid overconfidence and not underestimate a determined adversary.

+1 it’s the new golf. Friends in SA tell me that they’ve cancelled annual golf days to go riding with their clients and suppliers. MTBing is more family friendly. How many fathers with young kids can take 5 hrs on sat to play a round a golf?

Race Face good ‘n evil grips are cheap, look good, are comfortable, but you’ll need to cut the end off to fit barends. Barends are overrated and I’ve now taken them off all my bikes.

I have a single speed permanently set up on a taxc trainer – it’s virtually silent. A thick rubber mat helps to keep the noise and any vibration down as well. You’ll need some cheap towels to soak up all the sweat.

mu3266 – Glad to hear it. Let’s hope that you don’t have to. I have no doubt that our Armed Forces will do us proud in the unlikely event the Argies forget their history. However, I’m not certain that the British public has the stomach to take the sort of casualties as last time. I’m not even sure that we’re willing to kill 700 Argies to keep it. Anyway, I don’t think that this hypothesis will be tested anytime soon – Unless Argie Military Intelligence monitor this forum.

Great product. Partically when combined with a crudcatcher on the down tube.

Whyte’s Charing Cross look nice. Specialized have a range of Tricross with disc as well. I’ve got a 2010 Tricross Comp – great bike, lot of fun. Mrs R has the top of the range 2012 Tricross and likes it a lot.

It is a bit strange though. You should expect to see some large, mixed groups of tits moving about from garden to garden in the winter. There is less cover and the birds use numbers to keep an eye out for sparrow hawks and cats. They can move long distances to find water when everything is frozen.

The need to encourage other people in your area to create a bird friendly area. You could help advertise the RSPB Big Garden Watch that ends 17 Feb http://www.rspb.org.uk/

The Dirty Disco is too nice for commuting. Besides, it appears not to have the bosses required for mudguards and racks – I could be wrong and it might not matter to you. What about a Charge Filter, Cotic X or a Surly Cross Check? By a frame and use the part that you’ve already got.

I’ve found that placing seed feeders in or near very dense bushes encourages birds to feed. It can be difficult to see them, but they feel safer. Do you have a resident Robin? They can be quite aggresive and scare other birds away.

+1 for G-Form pads, although I’d prefer them in black rather than bright yellow. They’re always in my camelbak and come out when things begin to look at little scary, or when I’m really tired at the end of a long day.

I’ve also got the Endura MT500 which don’t get used much now. They tend to come up a little on the small side.

Finally, a good news story from Hebden Bridge. Much better than recent reports http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/why-has-hebden-bridge-become-suicide-central-1811034.html

Just got back from a two hour ride. Lots of signs and diversions about, but still very worthwhile. Found some bits that I’ve not done before. Ground was frozen so the bike is pretty clean although I will need to get the road salt off it pronto. Can’t wait to do it again.

I quite like the look of these http://www.german-a.de/en/kilo.html I guess that people are too concerned about how their bikes look than how they ride.

I’ve got a Garmin GTU 10 Tracker. Does everything automatically as long as there is a mobile signal. There’s even an app so that people can follow your progress in real time. Battery can last a month depending on the settings. Bikeradar reviewed it a little while ago.

SBZ. I suspect that you have not referenced a vital paper or key publication. You may simply have missed it, or perhaps you rejected it as not being relevant. It’s worth asking when you see your tutor. I doubt that using GS alone is grounds for a failure.

Wikipedia is actually a very useful resource, but not a source itself. It’s always worth looking at the linked documents. Also, by clicking on the ‘Talk’ tab at the top of the page, you gain access to current debate on the topic – a great source of ideas.

I blame my parents for my lack of bike skills by not letting me have a BMX in the 80s. I envy these guys!

I still cringe when I think about my first day at University in the early 1990s. I opened a door for a female student who promptly got on her soap box and lectured me on women’s rights – in front of hundreds of other students….

Yes. It’s good. A little like playing a game and you don’t have to think too hard. However, the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it – listen to French radio via the internet, read French magazines, holiday in France etc.

How long before our NATO friends the Turks gets dragged into this conflict? It wont be long before the Kurds in Syria stream across the border into Turkey – which is likely to inflame the Kurdish insurgency.
