Look at the length on the blade. Compare it to the Deore upwards Shimano mtb brakes. Obviously you’ll be able to brake with a single digit, but you’ll:

    1. run into issues with the lever hitting the rest of your knuckles, or
    2. have to play around with the position of the main body on the bar

I never said they aren’t suitable, I said they weren’t designed for it…

Now go off to CRC and notice that Shimano make the Deore M615 in standard and trekking varieties and ask yourself why.

this is funny, why? i imagine they are designed more with that in mind than mtb…

They look like they aren’t designed for single finger braking. Would be ok for touring, but not for mtb…

I’ve been emailing Henry Folkard, BMC access Rep for the Peaks. He’s very concerned with what’s going on in with this case and replied with the following yesterday:

Nothing from DCC yet, but I gather the issue has been raised with Ramblers and Sheffield LAF, as well as by members of the Peak LAF.
It has been put on the agenda of the next Peak LAF’s sub group (I am a member) in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime PDNPA is taking the matter up direct with DCC (ie Peter White) on the grounds that the nature of the repair is inappropriate on landscape grounds. Whether Natural England were consulted, and why they agreed if they did, will also be relevant.
PDNPA has to be concerned on this point because the TRO they imposed was justified on landscape grounds.
In this case I think that the landscape arguement is stronger that the surface arguement. Different user groups have trenchant and very different views on what sort of surface is appropriate.
Legally I fancy the psition will be that a repair has to be ‘appropriate to the nature of the way’, but that probably raises more questions than it answers.

Is anyone from PDMTB planning to attend the LAF meet? If not, I’ll try and find out some more details.

Ok folks, im not trolling with this i promise. Many issues aside i think i can kind of see where they are coming from. Some of those step downs look lots of fun but you wouldnt let a beginner roll them? so it needs fixing as its obviously causing the track to widen as people walk around them. the only other option would be to put another track in i guess and i cant see them doing that.

its not a trail centre is it..

Exactly, it’s not a trail centre! Probably the two biggest user groups, walkers followed by mtbers, don’t really care for flat boring trails in the countryside. Sure, there will be people with access difficulties who require easier paths, but they’re very much a minority – not that they shouldn’t be catered for, but there are plenty of other paths in the area that meet those specific requirements…

Just the following posted on BMC FB page and emailed the area reps for PD

    Hi Henry,

I’m not sure whether you are aware of the resurfacing of the Rushup Edge bridleway which is currently underway? Derbyshire CC appear to have commissioned contractors to cover up and flatten the trail to the cost of some £70,000. If the work is similar to other projects in the vicinity we can expect the exposed natural bedrock to be covered with road planings, making the path seriously out of kilter with the surroundings.

This bridleway is of historical importance and many argue that having endured years of weathering and erosion it was now stable, unable to erode much more and the exposed rock added to the beauty of the rugged landscape in the Dark Peak.

The bridleway is also very popular in the mountain biking community and there is a lot of anger at this work, which is being conducted without any consultation with the user group even though there have been attempts to work with DCC. Unfortunately, mountain biking in the UK does not currently have such a well established and respected orgainsation such as the BMC who can represent our views and campaign for our issues. However, many mountain bikers are also hill walkers and climbers and I feel that we all share similar interests in preserving and respecting our natural landscapes.

I am writing as a concerned hill user and would like to know whether you have any clout in helping us stop this work. There is a small protest occurring today from 10am on Rushup Edge where other concerned citizens are hoping to raise the profile of this case and put a stop to the work.

For more information, read more here:

And the group Peak District MTB has a facebook group with additional information:

Can that surface actually be ridden on?

It’s rubbish at the moment, but its gonna get a topping by the sounds of it!

Just back from a ride around Edale, I wanted to get one last blast at Rushup before it’s lost forever. As it is currently, there is still a chance we can stop this madness and revert back to all its bedrock glory. The stones that have been dumped can still be removed and they are only in around 4 or 5 patches where the drops were. Unfortunately I’m out of the country as of Monday morning, otherwise I’d join the protest, but I hope it goes well and some awareness of the issues can be raised to local and national levels. Somebody needs to look into stuff like library closures, council cutbacks (specifically jobs) in Derbyshire over the past year or two to give any attending media some comparison of where this £70k could have gone.

Below are a few additional pics of the track’s current state. You can see that some of the bedrock is still exposed and the real contrast between the natural rock (sandstone?) and the imported stuff. Not really sensitive to the local area, but not doubt there are plans to cover it all anyway! [sad face] If they end up topping and compacting with the same materials as Chapelgate, expect road planings, which is completely adverse to the natural rock in the area & looks shite. Not only that, for everyone who is suggesting that a couple of harsh winters will get rid of the material, I doubt it very much. Can’t remember when Chapelgate was done (2-3 years ago??), but the surface is holding up very well. Only now is a small amount of erosion from weather (a water channel) starting to appear.

For the rest of my ride today I staged my own mini Kinder Tresspass as a disgruntled user. It happened that I was stopped at one point by the NP ranger and he quizzed me about whether I knew I shouldn’t be up there on a bike. I responded by letting him know I was completely aware of the distinction between FPs & BWs. He came back and asked “so you’re just choosing to ignore the rules?”, to which I then replied “seen as my user group is being ignored by PDNP and DCC, absolutely” mentioning the work on Rushup, which he was fully aware of. I also said that there’s probably going to be an increase of mountain bikers on FPs off the back of this situation. He didn’t have much of a comeback to this, but I really hope that he has to pass on our conversation at the end of his shift.

Which got me thinking…is there any scope to use this a catalyst to start fighting access laws properly. We’re currently on the losing side of pretty much every battle (bar some of the work Ride Sheff has done), we should up our ante and take the fight to them properly!

They’re flexible so if you wanted to check into a resort for the kids club/wives etc you can still join on their rides. Or get your own villa.

    Ditto Ride Ibiza: http://rideibiza.com/

Stay in Santa Eularia – tonnes of hotels & resorts and pick a few days to ride with the guys out there. I went out this year and due to circumstances (was there for a wedding) didn’t actually to ride with Ash, but he seemed really sound and gave me some good advice on where to ride even though I wasn’t a paying guest. From what I did ride, the trails are well worth a week or two of your time!

I rode it again on Sunday for the first time in a few years. It was always my favourite trail centre…and still is. Had loads of flow when I was there, wind must have been blowing in a different direction.

I had a similar marking (the blue circled ones) on my old RC3’s. Started off as feint lines like that and I never did anything about it. Eventually it got worse to the point where I ended up with a fairly substantial wear mark, even though I’d stripped them down, cleaned the seals etc. I have a feeling the stanchion was rubbing on the bushing inside the lowers. It never really affected performance though.

Might be something completely different, but those marks do look similar to what I saw on mine.

A bit off the beaten track, First Chop Brewing Arm just over the border in Salford (literally 5 mins from Deansgate) would be a good bet. Super laid back, so you won’t have any issues getting in, great beer brewed on site and it looks like they have a daytime event on this Saturday too, with street food, music and a bouncy castle!!

Run by a bunch of friendly local musicians/arty folk who like a good beer. Always a nice vibe.

Might be worth a detour in the afternoon to find something a bit more underground, or the ‘proper’ Manchester. You never know, you might just stay there for the duration, coz it’s ace!!

Within 1-2 hours drive of Manchester you’ve got access to: Lakes, Peaks, N Wales/Snowdonia, Pennines & Calderdale, Yorkshire Dales, Cheshire (Macclesfield & Stockport), and there’s plenty of stuff around Bury, Bolton, Rochdale & Oldham. Should keep you busy for a while…

The plastic lever doesn’t allow you to get the same purchase as you can with the metal one, that’s why I’m saying it is better and might be a cheaper option.

I never had any issues with the metal version, but the plastic one is carp. Go for a Maxle if you have to buy the whole thing though. You could try and source a replacement metal lever for your DT skewer.

Re Kerr’s DQ; the 2 images in peachos’ post show the tape being moved significantly. was that because of his crashing into the poles or did they move them before meaning they were tighter than he would have expected?

I thought it was moved before Kerr’s run, but it seems like it was moved (wider) after he knocked the tape down. Subsequent riders then landed in a similar width to Kerr (i.e. they would have also been DQ’d), which adds to the complexity of the issue.

Either way, Kerr has held his hands up and admitted he went out of the tape and deserved the DQ, as that’s the rule. Not that he necessarily agrees with the rule.

Wideopenmag has a good interview with him on the matter: http://wideopenmag.co.uk/news/22963/we-talked-to-bernard-kerr-about-his-world-cup-disqualification

Just spotted that Kerr got DQ’d I’m guessing for landing on the tape which is a big shame for him.

Si Paton was talking about this on FB last night. Seems like a very unfair decision…

Bernard Kerr disqualified at the UCI World Cup is a wrong judgement.

I did exactly this at a race at Moelfre off the ski jump (not one of my races). All by accident (going too fast)! The BC comm tried to DQ me. Luckily I’m also a BC comm and the rule book states the poles used should be 1.5m high and the tape should be 0.5m off the ground.

As in Leogang, It’s a blind crest so you could argue the course was not taped correctly. This should have been picked up by the tech delegates/Comms from the UCI but we all make mistakes, even me. Also the course can only be changed for safety reasons and everyone would need to be informed at the start line. Changing the tape mid race is wrong and should not be allowed.

Safe to say I was not dq’d. Make sure you know the rules! I know I do!

The image tells the story pretty well. Kerr is in the bottom pic and you can see how much further in the tape is.

I’ve an Xperia Z and have always found the camera to be of decent enough quality. Smartphones are never going to compare well against a DSLR or a decent quality compact for that matter, but a lot of high end phones are very good and comparable in quality, but there will be differences just as there are in the proper camera world.

    Here’s a shot from the Z.

Also, I picked up a Moto G as an interim phone whilst the Z is getting fixed (cracked the screen). What a phone. For £100 I just can’t fault it. Latest Android, minimal bloatware, super quick and the camera is alright too. I had an S3 Mini before this (its taking a while to fix the Sony) and simply the Moto G craps all over the Samsung!

    Moto G pic:

Finally, if you are a bit more serious about getting high-end compact quality images, the Smart Lens might be worth considering. Nice concept and they’re easy to use (from limited use whilst hanging around an airport).

Your phone? I use mine when I want easy nav (i.e. leading a group). I do have qct maps (memory map) of the whole country though, which can be expensive.

I use the MMTracker app on a Sony Xperia Z, which is good because of the large screen, decent battery and weatherproofness. And 1 device weighs less than lugging two around with you!
