Hi Freester,
I don’t think you could use what we use. The reason is too complicated to get into here.

What’s you objection to live updating and ajax?

You are likely using the version of BBPress we use on the grit.cx site.
We don’t have a preview on that. If we did I would likely use jQuery or similar to render a preview. You wouldn’t necessarily need to use ajax as the servers db is not updated until the post is submitted.

Even better would be to use Angular.js to provide live data binding. That would allow you to have the preview updated as you type.

hammyuk: And this happens when you have kept your browser open?

hammyuk: That is very strange. I use all of those devices and browsers as do many of my colleagues and we get logged out after a month as designed in the cookie. How do you fare on other sites? Is there anything you are running on your devices that would get in the way of normal setting of login cookies?

scotroutes: About once a month? If so that’s the correct behaviour.

By the way, if you want to clear out all your cookies from Singletrack so you can do a clean login. Click on this link:
http://singletrackworld.com/clearcookies.php
Obviously, you’ll need to log in again after.

Hi everyone who has problems staying logged in,
I looked into this some time ago and I think I posted my conclusions here on this forum

Basically my understand is thus:
Many users were not selecting “Remember Me” when they log in. Therefore their login is only valid for one session.

This is not a problem on a desktop browsers as the session persists until all browser windows are closed by the user.

However, iOS will do one and possibly two things that will cause a problem for session cookies. If the user leaves our site and for example goes back to Facebook (or their day job ;-), after a period of time (I think it’s 10 minutes) iOS will suspend the Safari session.

The second thing that (I think) happens if the user comes close to their device’s memory limit iOS will take steps to clear out stuff it considers unnecessary. I imagine this will include session cookies.

So, in short this is a “feature” or iOS and if you want to be remembered tick “Remember Me” when logging in.

Hi,
It turns out the issue has been caused (in layman’s terms) by a change by Apple in what apps are allowed to know about the devices they are installed on.

If you are having this problem with your subscription and you have a PocketMags account linked to your subscription you can reinstate your magazines by logging in.

Tab on the Cog icon

Tap on Login / Register

Enter your details

If you have a PocketMags account or are not sure if you have one, but can’t remember the password you can retrieve it/check here:
http://pocketmags.com/forgotpassword.aspx

If you don’t have a PocketMags account and are experiencing this problem, get in touch at tech@singletrackworld.com

Hi guys,
Sorry if there is confusion about who to contact in the event of issues.
If your subscription is with us – please contact us.subs@sibngletrackworld.com
If you sub is with Apple or PocketMags – please contact them help@pocketmags.com

PocketMags don’t have details of our subscribers so can’t help with issues such as this.

1210tech and duncancallum, I have requested a reset on your accounts and will get back to you as soon as soon as the issue is fixed.

Please do contact subs@singletrackworld.com if you have issues with your subscriptions. It’s a bit hit and miss whether we spot your requests on the forum.

I may be wrong, but Paralells is Virtualisation rather than Dual Booting. I use VMWare Fusion (similar to parallells)

What are you planning to use the Windows aspect for? The decision on whether I would install anti-virus on a virtual machine would for me come down to usage.

27orangeninjas – I wouldn’t necessarily let that exclude you. The PHP we need doing is advanced for a primarily Front-End Developer as I am, but it’s probably not particularly taxing for a trained programmer.

Hi All,
Firstly I want to make it clear that we are taking this matter very seriously. We really don’t want this happening to our users and are doing everything we can to work out ways of stopping it.

Short of our site being hacked there are two ways that malicious code can get displayed on our site.

Ad networks distributing malicious code[/*]

Users posting embedded content from sites that are hacked or deliberately distribute malicious code[/*]
The user embedded content issue appears less common and is easier to deal with as Google sends us instant reports if it finds any embedded code of compromised sites. We remove the content asap.

The ad networks issue poses a more complex problem.
We are trying to deal with it by working with the ad networks to identify malicious ads and passing on your reports. However, the source of malicious code can be difficult to track and even when one source is identified it does not prevent the problem from cropping up from another source.

Regarding the assertion that this is a Singletrack only problem, I’d have to disagree. A quick google will show that the exact same issues are appearing on a multitude of sites. The common factor is that all these sites use ad networks. What users may be seeing is a symptom of the bidding system that underpins ad networks.

If a user comes to our site for the first time or having not visited in the last 24 hours the will initially be shown high paying ads and our contracted bike industry ads. The more pages a user views the less valuable they become to the ad networks and the lower the bid drops. Malware distributors are not likely to pay large amounts to show their ads and they are likely to have more success hacking the networks of smaller advertisers. Therefore the more pages you view on one site, the more likely you are to see malicious code. Unfortunately, this means that our regular users are most affected.

With all of the networks that we work with, we have set a minimum price below which we will not accept ads. The exception to this is the Google Adsense network which does not allow us to set a minimum price. It is difficult to know how successful this policy is as we do not know how many malicious ads we have not displayed (if you follow my meaning).

Regarding Premier users with ads turned off seeing malicious code, there are two potential causes. It could be user generated embed content as mentioned above or it could be that their login cookie has expired and they’ve been logged out. I’ve yet to see any screenshots from a user with ads turned off experiencing malicious code issues. If It happen to you please do send details to tech@singletrackworld.com

somouk: Can you send me details of your browser and device so I can test.

We’re continuing to research this problem and will implement anything we can to improve the situation. In the meantime I would recommend you install anti-virus software on your device to mitigate the problem.

Not sure why you con’t upload an avatar. What is the file type and size (in kb and pixels)?
You’ve you uploading a reasonable sized file in jpg format it should work.
Alternatively, you can use Gravatar and this site will pick up your avatar from there.

Tags are available to Premier users, so you should see a field below the reply form on this thread.

Just a thought, had you all turned on “Block pop-ups” in your Chrome or Android Browser settings?

Caveat: As this appears to be a virus, blocking pop-ups after the virus has installed on your device may not help as the virus could overcome browser settings.

Stoner: Not sure what you mean. Are you asking if Premier users with ads switched off are being affected?

I’ve been looking into this a bit more and have a few observations,
We only use the major ad networks Google, Microsoft, AOL and Switch. They are very conscious of ad malware and I would be surprised if they were distributing this code.
We have hundreds of thousands of Android users on the site and it is the same few who report recurring problems.
I use the site on my Android Nexus 7 and HTC One S regularly and have never encountered a problem.
All this leads me to believe the problem may be with the users devices. Google does not vet the quality of apps distributed via the Google Play store so the odds are that some of our users may have installed a dodgy app at some stage. Equally, Android devices are vulnerable to viruses and other malware. It is recommended that you should run anti virus package on your device.

Ultimately as I have been unable to replicate the problem I can’t see how I can help further. If you have any further information that would help me identify the cause of the problem I would be happy to investigate further.

We are keeping the ad networks informed of the concerns in case they are the source..

Coming soon…Singletrack LARGE PRINT EDITION.

ePub and Kindle formats are available form the MagArchive. Both support text resizing, font choice, hight contrast etc. My Kindle will even read them to me. Not discounting complaints about the print size, just letting you know alternatives are available.
