The descent from Black Hambleton is a little to the south IIRC. Years since I’ve been there.

mrjmt – that looks like the one.

I had a proper play with this last night – it’s well good! I guess from the URL title it’s intended to help find paths that are on the map, on a satellite view, something I’ve done by ‘hand’ in the past.

Thanks for the heads up on it.

That’s the drop down to the ford near Cod Beck Res. on the Cleveland Way if I’m not mistaken.

I think it’s here but I’ll have a better look and edit if need be.

the bikes at your gym are crap

It’s my road bike, on a turbo trainer. It’s a casual class in the LBS.

psling & Iain – I’ve considered the free weights. Those would be in addition to spinning. I just don’t want to rob peter to pay paul, by conditioning myself to spin low gears.

Ok, I should have added a few points. I have a road bike here, and using that on the turbo, but even in top gear, there’s not a whole lot of resistance.

There is no right to ride here, all permissions based, so we have to be very careful not to damage the trails. Therefore, no wet weather riding. The parks close at dusk, and access is technically illegal. We get one sanctioned night ride per month.

They’re really only as hard as you make them, so aim for fairly high resistance to build up that leg strength

Therein lies the problem! I can’t get the resistance high enough

My VW Polo has a tiny rear wiper, and I think it also has hydrophilic glass in the rear window – every drop of water seems to end up on there. :(

So much is going to depend on how much use the trail is going to get, the soil type, the sideslope etc.

I help build trails in the US, which are shared trails, hiking/biking and hiking/biking/equestrian, so we go for a full on, bench cut to mineral soil to give a sustainable base. We generally follow the IMBA methods in this book, but it is quite pricy. Most of the techniques can be boiled down to, keep water from settling on the trail, and keep water from flowing down the trail.

If ever you are down this way and fancy a ride (and a pint!) give me a shout!

    Will do!

These seem to be rarer than you might think. Mavic make a plastic one, but they aren’t available everywhere. My LBS had never heard of them 8O

    JRA has them;

(linky doesn’t seem to like the ‘&’ in there. Copy and Paste :-))
Edit – linky in Preview doesn’t work, but does in real post…

    General advice here;

Power ‘required’ can depend on who you ride with. If other people have 2000 lumens, you might struggle to ride in front of them with say, a 400 lumen set, as you’ll be in your own shadow. You can get away with pretty low powered lights if you are on your own, or if everyone rides with similar powered lights.

If you’re riding twisty stuff, mounting the light on your helmet helps lots. Riding an area with lots of humpy bumps with only a headlight can be a pain too, as it’s hard to see the bumps. If you do have a light on your helmet, careful where you look when you have a stop. Your riding mates won’t appreciate being blinded.

Do get a fast charger if there is an option. Nothing worse than missing out on a ride by forgetting to charge your lights when they take 8 hours to charge.

Personally, I run a 2nd hand Niterider Pro LED 700 on the head and add a Light and Motion Seca 400 as a bar light as required. Tested a set of Ay-Up V4s a couple of winters ago – awesome, but got a great deal on the L&M Seca.

About to head out for a night ride in Maryland, followed by cooking steak on a bonfire, lubricated with Sam Adams Winter Lager and Clynelish.

It’s going to be pleasantly freezing. Can. Not. Wait! :D

Edited as I didn’t know that was on the naughty list…

The main difference is that road pedals don’t have the same float to allow the foot to roll sideways like MTB pedals do. The body of the pedal, and the cleat interface is much larger, so the foot is more supported.

Difference? I guess road pedals allow more power transfer, and probably better for giving it the beans as it seems to take more effort to twist a foot out of them (at least with mine).

Thanks for the comments! I’m too quick to jump on the pooter and do some manipulation, it’s good fun to take the pencil out for a turn.

PPS Week after next a still life with bike bits in the style of Basket of Fruit (Caravaggio)

Nice – looking forward to it

If you’re referring to the right hand side ‘ticker’; there is an extension which blocks it in Chrome, and ways round it in Firefox with scripts.

    Both methods linked to through this page;

So I thought I’d have ago at the cross-hatching thing that Catflees posted up the other week. Cheated a bit, by getting the basic shape in by tracing from the reference photo, but then put all the details in by hand. My left eye is not that wonky in real life.

So, by putting up a sign, you’re admitting that there is a danger to putting one’s hand in the box, and that you know about it. Not sure that’s clever but IANAL.

I’ve run from the top of Static Peak in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming in a thunderstorm. We were lazy and set off about an hour late, and didn’t make good time up the hike, so were still gathering at the top when the regular afternoon storm came through. Ended up getting an electric shock from a mate as we stood next to each other for a photo. (!?) We must have run for a good 2 miles off the peak back into the treeline. No idea how close we were to a strike, and no desire to repeat that.

Also, had hypothermia in the North York Moors. Day started out crisp and fresh, but turned to rain and hail. Got to the point of not shivering and collapsed in the car park.

    Mother Nature eh

I’ll add my support to Conti tyres. My Specialized came shod with OEM Mondos, seemed to attract road debris and possibly made from Bakelite. Binned after the first damp ride.

Conti UltraGator Duraskins my personal faves.

Hey – I get to play with one of those Ditch Witches regularly – they’re lots of fun. (Not as fun as building trails with an excavator, mind)

However, when we need to clear areas of brush, we get someone swamping with a chainsaw, followed by a BobCat T190 with Brushcat attachment. The chains underneath that baby will tear through almost anything

I have to do the bendy every once in a while with my rotors. I tend to just press hard with my thumbs. By truing fork do you mean
    ?

I change my tires a fair amount (twice a week)

Hells bells! I got so fed up with swapping DH to XC tyres a couple o’ times a month, so I built a second set of wheels…

When I went with my parents to buy my first proper MTB in 1997, I had a choice of an STX-RC Kona Fire Mountain with P2s, an STX-RC Kona Hahanna with some cheap RSTs or Rockshox Indys or similar, or an STX rigid aluminium Trek 6000.

I chose the Trek as I thought it had a better frame (Thinking – ‘Aluminium is better than steel innit’), and worth the crappier gears. I later learnt just what a stupid mistake that was. I was 14.

am I best off sticking with mtb shoes?

The main reason I changed to using road shoes on the road bike was for the stability. With MTB pedals my foot could roll side-to-side across the pedal. After trying some road pedals, I found the wider cleat interface makes for a more solid foot placement, which I prefered. If it doesn’t bother you, you could stick with MTB shoes.

bright white for extra wrongness points.

Nowt wrong with white shoes on the road bike as long as 1) they’re shiny white and 2) you’re fast enough!

so the police can take action on such muppets for dangerous driving.

Hmmmmmmm. I recall the brouhaha when the police didn’t do anything for the car passenger caught on camera getting out and attacking a cyclist.

Steel Genesis iO frame with an Easton EC90 seatpost, albeit an inline one. Never ridden the frame with an alloy post, but have ridden an alloy frame with the carbon post, and the same alloy frame with an alloy post.

Feels great, and never noticed the back end being skittish. But in any situation where it might have been, I’ve been off the saddle, so it doesn’t make much difference.

well it is a good job i’m not studying english then

Regardless, whatever subject you end up studying, they won’t like you using words completely incorrectly. Poor punctuality punctuation will annoy examiners.

On a lighter note, Edinburgh is an awesome place, with plenty of riding nearby. Lots of mountain bikers there, with an active club at the University.

As someone who has graded undergraduate and postgraduate essays at Edinburgh University, my wife says confusing ‘their’, ‘they’re’ and ‘there’ does not go down too well.

I’ve met some of the students who have been accepted by Edinburgh University. I doubt their abilities :-D
