So when you are using the sat nav app and a call comes through does it close the app? Can you have the music on your phone running at the same time? Basically what are the pro’s and cons of the iphone as a sat nav. Thinking of Co pilot.

CoPilot here too. When a call comes in, it just rings over the top of the app; when call ends, it returns to app. I believe it can run music at the same time; I use a standalone iPod for music as I find the FM transmitter doesn’t play well with the phone.

I’ve not had a problem with CoPilot – once I got my iphone 4. It was terribly slow on the old 3G. Well, one tiny problem – the lane guidance image that (can be set to) appear when on a motorway approaching a junction is a ‘daytime’ colour scheme only. At night, with the nighttime colour scheme running, and the dash lights dimmed – it’s like a small nuclear explosion on the dashboard.

Also, take the time to set it up with route preferences. Mine started on ‘shortest’ as default so would look for every tiny road to get there. Set to something sensible, like preferring motorways or whatever, and setting it to the speeds I actually drive has ended up with it being pretty accurate on times and routes.

It does chew through the battery on the phone quickly, so be sure to get a decent USB adaptor.

Mine stayed on 24/7 for the first 8 months (of 4 years). Then hand swelled up from some random allergic reaction, and I had to shampoo the thing off before it got stuck. That bloody hurt!

Once it had come off once, I now endlessly fiddle with it (take it off, flip it over and put it back on), but never take it off for biking or similar. Felt really odd gripping handlebars for first few days. Now, don’t notice it.

I needed to replace the home button on a 3G. This involved a new screen and digitizer as they break when you take it all to bits. Anyway, first time the ebay shop sent a 3GS part, which didn’t fit. Whilst dealing with returning that, I bought another, assembled front as the first time had been an uber fiddle. On that one, earpiece didn’t work and it didn’t fit together well. :-( But screen quality seemed fine…

So, if you’re good with fiddly connectors and the like, buy the bits and do it yourself. Plenty of youtube videos to guide you.

Liking my Outlier Four Season trousers. Stretchy, breathable, dry fast, clean well, but cost a lot…
I wear mine all day in a semi-smart office after a 6 mile trip through town.

Would not recommend them. EVER. Service was ok, didn’t have any major issues with that.

1st Failing. Moved house, so phoned to cancel, told “cancel your direct debit – your account is closed.” A week later got an email asking for alternative payment details. Account hadn’t been closed and now I had an outstanding balance. Emailed them, and was told – sorry, account wasn’t closed, not sure if the balance is ‘real’, we’ll let you know, account is now closed blah blah blah.
They then sent a letter 3 months later to the old address, threatening further action if I didn’t pay said balance, and that they had had to close my account (the one that had been ‘closed’ twice. No contact in between, despite having my email and phone number on file. Finally got an email confirming account had actually been cancelled and to ignore any letters.

2nd Failing. Phone up to order broadband for new place (not long after cancelling the first package). “We’ll need to check with BT”. Later “BT can’t connect you for a month”. Me “ok fine – cancel it, that’s too long”. “Sorry sir, I can’t cancel it, you’ll have to phone 09 blah blah blah.” Phoned them to cancel, had to have a long conversation with them trying to persuade me not to cancel. Eventually, told it was cancelled and before I could ask for any more information, the git hung up on me. BT engineer then called up a month later to ask to be let in!

I’ll not be an Orange customer ever again.

Flights are likely to be with BA – as far as I can tell, they take a bike for free if it’s within your allowance (both are, though not together).

Well, you get more allowance if you get to fly higher classes, but on scum class you only get one hold bag – fine if you fly with cabin baggage for yourself only, otherwise it counts as taking an extra bag. BA is pretty cheap for this though – £30 for an extra bag IIRC.

BA specify a recognised bicycle bag. Having said that, I flew both my bikes back from the USA in December, one boxed and one bagged, no problem.

And I got to watch Life Cycles on the in-flight entertainment too 8)

I’ve not ridden many of the range – I have an Ironwood (8″ travel both ends), and fantastic it is too.

It weighs the same as my old Giant AC, but has 2″ more travel either end and would whup the Giant’s ass up a climb, and back down. The angles do make a massive difference. Go and test ride one on some proper terrain. It’s the only way.

Technical hitches. It’s complicated. There’s no way around it, there are a lot of hoses and connections to watch out for and make space for, making sure they don’t pinch or get tight when the bars turn.

Also, think about buying in spares of the custom parts (within reason) as there’s not much chance of finding them out and about. I blew the shock on my Ironwood in the Alps on day 2 of a week, no chance of getting spare parts for them, even though the internals are quite similar to Fox, and there was a ex pro-team mechanic on hand. I ended up having to bodge the bike with a huge Fox Vanilla Coil shock :-) (Thanks to Evasion Sports, Les Gets)

Careful of that shock! I had that one fitted to my Ironwood (mistake by the factory) and whilst it’s a great performer, it’s pretty fragile. Mine decided to deconstruct itself in the Alps on day 2, require mucho bodging to get the bike to work. Bionicon sorted me out with a new, and correct, shock after that.

I first went for Time RXEs, as I love Time MTB pedals.

I HATED the road pedal; I wore through cleats double quick, broke bits off of the pedals repeatedly and never liked the engagement. Replaced them with some entry level SPD-SL units and never regretted it. Now use 105s.

Yay – been away from STW for a few weeks, happy to see Art Club is still going!

But not sure how much time I’ll have, just moved house and starting a new job on Wednesday, plus the scanner is stashed away somewhere. BUT I’ve got my full set of Derwent pencils back from storage.

I’m an Alliance and Leicester –> Santander customer. Like any bank I’ve used (and I have very little loyalty) it often depends on the person you deal with.

I’ve had a reissued bank card not turn up, and them cancel the old one ahead of the expiry date as I had no idea I was expecting a new card. However, the people on the phone were helpful, and got a replacement card out ahead of schedule, albeit to the account address rather than the branch, but it all worked out.

Had to phone them up from the USA, and that also went well.

They haven’t ticked me off totally , so I’m happy to stick with them for now…

Cup and cone bearings. I can’t do them because I hate them. I hate them because I can’t do them. I actively seek to rid every bike I have of them, despite endless “They’re easy” comments.

Setting up cheap and nasty V-brakes was an old treat when I worked in a shop. (Thankfully, I only assembled bikes, otherwise I would have had to work with cup and cone bearings!)

And “needs bled” is perfectly grammatical (Kaschak and Glenberg, 2004). It’s just conforms to a different grammar, common in central Scotland and the American Mid-West. :D

My ‘main’ bike is a bitsa bike. Frame is 2009, forks are 2007, rear hub is 2010, front one is 1994, one brake is 2006, one is 2008… :D

Just as applying the rules incorrectly makes you think “Waterstones” is correct.

I’m not applying any rules. I’m saying that the rules do not apply. They could call it ‘Water’stones’ or ‘Waterstoneses’, and it’d still be correct.

Aracer – in both cases the prescriptivist might argue for ‘I fly out, he flew out’ and ‘one wild-goose chase, two wild-geese chases’ They’re wrong, obviously, as, like you say, both are grammatically correct. But if you apply a narrow, rules-out-of-context, thinking to them you get the incorrect versions, just as applying narrow, out of context rules to ‘Waterstones’ makes them think ‘Waterstone’s’ is grammatical.

Can a single word even be grammatical?

It is no longer ‘a bookshop belonging to Waterstone’ as it used to be, and even if it was – Reuters was founded by Mr Reuter. You don’t see people whinging about it not being Reuter’s.

‘Waterstones’ has ceased being a regular word, and they can do what they like with it. To me, it’s a little bit like the way grammar changes when words are grouped together, or used in a different context. ‘I fly, he flew’ but in baseball ‘I fly out, he flied out’ or ‘one wild-goose chase, two wild-goose chases’. Or ‘e. e. cummings.’

Go to Maplin, and ask for the aircraft 2 jack converter. Airline headphones are crappy, and you cant use yours in their place unless you have the “special” jack.

Not always the case. I take my own earphones – most planes I’ve flown in these days seem to have single sockets. But when I have plugged them into a double jack armrest – they worked fine. And yes – airline headphones are crappy!

We got the keys to our first house on a Friday 13th. They asked us if we’d like to move in the day before or the day after instead, as the sellers ‘would understand’ 8O

TPS, whilst good, is only relevant for UK-originating calls, or at least, it used to be. If they choose to call you from abroad, and VOIP is making this more common, TPS has no teeth.

It’s the bit where they said – ‘we’re interviewing people later this week’, and then rejecting me before interviewing them. That suggests to me that I wasn’t the person for the job, rather than, I am in a shortlist of people who we’d employ…?

I got a frame only 2009 model, running singlespeed and with 100mm forks (Magura Menjas). Built with sensible rather than lightweight parts. And a few lightweight parts.

Possibly my most favouritest bike ever.

Got an old Fuji S5600, and for 90% of the time it’s great. I do sometimes wish for more DOF for arty-farty shots. Even wide open the DOF is huge – it’s a feature of all bridge type cameras, or so I read a few years ago.

Without knowing what was said between the cops/guards, and what’s not visible on the vid – it looks to me like the one who actually did the beating escaped whilst his ‘mates’ bore the brunt of the crowd attack. It’s not nice.

Just got 2 pairs of them to replace v old Assos ones and they are a better cut with more detailing on the fabrics.I did the same (well, 1 pair). I think they are much worse than my old Assos (T Roubaix). Can’t get them to sit right.

No experience of the new ones. I have sort of X-Fusion uppy side down forks on my Bionicon. I think they are quite old X-Fusion legs and sliders, with X-Fusion internals in one side, and Bioicon gubbins in the other. They are actually really, really nice – smooth as you like.

    Edit – X-Fusion Delta 8 DH forks

I spent a few years not really talking to my brother apart from when we visiting our parents, even though he lived on the other side of the same city. We just didn’t have much in common – he was out partying and still being a student – I was in a steady job and being domestic boring. Now he’s settled down, got himself a proper job, got engaged and the like, we get on a lot better. He’s 2 years older than me, but you’d never know. Oh, and he’s my tenant now :-D
