I’ve used a few Conti ‘tubeless ready’ tyres, and they go up fine with a bit of Stans.

People build steel hardtails mainly for character it gives the frame. People don’t build steel full sus bikes because the character of the frame is dictated by the suspension design.

As far as i’m aware, all cars have some sort of suspension…..

    +2 for the 2004 Enduro.

Got mine off ebay a couple of years ago for £700. Maverick DUC forks, XTR groupset, Hope Mono 4s, etc…

I’m sure new bikes are better but i certainly don’t feel at much of a disadvantage compared to those on much newer (and more expensive) rides.

Really enjoyed all the snow last winter (even though i crashed my car) so yeah, bring it on!

(snow tyres on standby this year)

    Just measured mine.

    195 x 50 which concurs with PJM1974’s measurements.

Finish work at 18:30. Quick bite to eat then meet at 20:00 for riding. Usually don’t finish riding until around 23:00. By the time i’ve got home washed the bike and had a shower and some supper it’s close to 1:00.

Work at 8:00 the next day 🙁

I had one just like that but with Fox Vanilla forks on it. Was a bit on the heavy side but i really liked it.

Unfortunately i needed some cash so it ended up getting sold to a mate. He loves it!!!

    Toyota Celica?

Very reliable, reasonably fun, you’ll get a good one for £4k, and if it’s going to be ran for years parts will be cheap.

I did quite a bit of solo ‘drive n riding’ last winter.

First time was indeed scary, but after a few times i learnt to really like it.

    Magicshine.

Been using my MJ-808 for nearly a year and have been very impressed. Works fine on its own and i’ve been very impressed by Magicshine’s service & delivery times.

Sounds like you are doing quite well.

I’m left with around £700 a month to pay for petrol, beers and bike stuff. It’d be nice to have more, but i’m not complaining.

Still riding my 03 Enduro and don’t feel at a disadvantage compared to those on much newer bikes.

I’d have thought the Enduro could be built into a reasonably light XC orientated bike (28ish lbs) without too much trouble.

I know it’s a bit different but i’ve got an 03 Enduro which is used mostly for general XC duties (i even used it for this year’s SITS). It weighs well under 30 lbs, and what it lacks in uphill zoominess is more than made up for in downhill confidence.

    +1 Amsterdam.

Been quite a few times now and it’s a great place to be a cyclist. Spent many happy days drinking, eating and biking my way around the city.

    Looks very interesting.

Appears to address the all-the-weight-at-the-back issue you get with hub gears.

Will this need some sort of chain tensioner to allow for suspension movement?

    Edit: Too slow

It is a bit of a faff.

Pumped it up with an inner tube first to pop the bead on. Deflated and popped off just one side of the bead to remove the tube. Poured some sealant in then inflated with a track pump.

I’m sure theres other ways to do it, but thats always worked for me.

I’ve used the 2.2 Rubber Queen UST and the 2.2 Rubber Queen BC.

The non UST one DOES work tubeless (with sealant). It doesn’t seal quite as well as the UST (needs pumping up every 4-5 days) but its about 350g lighter.

    Hope this helps.

I’ve ridden that section before going North to Kinlochleven.

It’s a long push to the top of Devil’s Staircase but not particularly difficult.

The ride from the top down into Kinlochleven is fantastic though and more than makes up for the push to the top!!!

    The site at Wasdale Head in the Lakes has a lot going for it;

Out of the way so quiet (for the Lakes).
Very pretty location (even for the Lakes).
Lots of good riding/walking (its the Lakes).
The nearby Hotel/Inn does decent food and has it’s own brewery!

I never thought i’d be giving you ‘advice’ on tyres, but…

If you like Panaracer, and you like Cinders, then Fire XC Pros seem like the obvious choice as they’re similar but tend to dig in a little better in my experience.

Go for an 11 speed if you can afford.

Weight is comparable to normal setup but concentrated. Easy to get used to.

Removing wheel is easy once you’ve done it a couple of times.

    Definitely worth considering.

That one isn’t actually mine, but it does look exactly the same.

I’d second what FunkyDunc says. MX5 is a lovely drive but slow (especially if you’re coming from an FTO), S2000 has a great engine but is quite expensive for a good one.

Don’t be put off by the fact that the MR2 is an import. Insurance isn’t too bad (i’m 27 and pay £600), parts and servicing isn’t an issue (same engine as Celica GT4). Cars from 1993 (rev 3) onwards have much improved handling and more power than earlier ones.

Not sure what else there is if you’re after 2 seats and rwd.

Hamsterley is much less exposed than Keilder, and is much more weatherproof than it used to be so probably your best bet over the next few days.

Black (but more like a red) route is much better than the Red (mostly boring fireroads) route although it is definately worth taking in the ‘Transmission’ section of Red.

Not on the work PC! Can send later though.

Picked mine up a few months ago for £4K

56,000 miles, completely standard and just imported from Japan so no rust/corrosion at all. Driven about 2,000 miles since then and absolutely love it!

Had to get the rack from Japan also (about £130 i think) and just stuck a couple of cycle carriers on.

There’s usually a few nice ones on the Pistonheads site. I’d try to avoid anything with loads of mods though.

    MR2 Turbo plus roof rack.

Easily get a good one for that money.

240 bhp, rwd, Toyota reliability and biker friendly!

My rack takes about 2 minutes to fit/remove.

Not sure if it’s still available but the MSR Velo tent is designed especially for bikers. Room for 2 people plus 2 bikes in the porch!

Had mine for a few years now and i’ve never even contemplated replacing it.
