Can the other ‘kid’ be scooting along on an Inbred with the saddle right down? :)

Did you at least help your grandson straddle it ie. you held it while he got on?

    nor did she say ‘gnarly’!

    Good for her. Well deserved.

Some of the reports refer to a boyfriend, I expect there’s a few here that will be a little disconsolate with that news!

Is this what you’re talking about honourablegeorge? I got one a few weeks ago (after turning a thumbnail blue) and love it.

I’m keeping an eye out for ESL teacher needed.

I keep telling my wife that if we stop living in our Asian paradise and move into the little flat above ST towers, eventually they’ll give me a job…

A friend of mine smoked plenty of weed, took coke and pills and tried acid when they were at uni (and for a year or so afterwards). They gave it up when it was time to grow up and it hasn’t had any long term effects whatsoever.

Meth, as others have said, is a simply horrible drug and pretty much any user will need proper help i.e. not from a mountainbike forum. I know this 2nd hand as none of my friend’s friends would have gone near that stuff. Like Binners and Peter, it’s a line many or most wouldn’t cross. Ketamine is often (in their experience) taken by student types without any serious effects, although there was a phrase “sharpie (the permanent marker) the a-hole in the k-hole” i.e. draw a big [word blocked by swear filter] on their forehead.

With nyour vagueness, I obviously don’t know what your relationship is to anyone involved but the parents will need support too. Remember that and good luck.

How about the STW wanted ads, or freecycle.

I got an old racing bike frame, BB, stem and forks for (literally) a case of Fosters* from STW.

*Yes, I did judge the man for such poor taste, but he otherwise couldn’t have been more helpful!

    Knobblies – Exmout (S. Devon).

First sponsored me in an XC race 17 years ago (when I was in my early teens). Since then, I did my school work experience there, they know I’m married, have a son etc and ask about them, always a little discount and, more importantly, offer tea / advice.

Take a photo of him riding how / where he shouldn’t. Make posters with a word of your choice (the kind not allowed on STW) and leave a few up along the route…

They are lovely looking bikes. I haven’t ridden one for 2 – 3 years but, if I was in the market for a new HT, they’d be on my list.

I like the way they’ve turned themselves around. Honestly, ‘UR bike iz sarcin’, I thought, spelled the end of the brand as a serious MTB’er name.

djbagines post of his new Ariel 15x really caught my eye. Esp. as I’m a full sus = ugly kind of person!

Done z1ppy – obviously hadn’t read the rules carefully enough!

The Sirus is £102 on CRC so seems like there’re some bargains to be had.

Thanks again booktownman. Not sure my wife’ll be happy when she gets home though!

I wasn’t able to get narrow chainring bolts but I did get washers that work. I had a quick ride in the road last night and the wife commuted to school. 1×9 seems fine. Nothing too bumpy but the chain seems fine.

The middle ring’s a little worn so think I’ll wait until Easter and get a thick/thin ring then.

    Thanks again

Thanks for the offer takisawa. I’m pretty sure that the narrow chainring bolts will be the easy bit to source.

Might have to wait until Easter to get a thick/thin ring but I can use the mech until then.

    Thanks again

    Reasons my 2 year old’s cried had an emotional melt-down this week;

I wouldn’t let him eat bird poo

I took his bike helmet off at bath time (we’d finished riding 2 hours earlier)

I wouldn’t let him climb inside the fridge

I wouldn’t let him have any coffee

I wouldn’t let him drive the car

I held his hand as he waded into the sea

I speared the wrong piece of pineapple with his fork (he wanted the third from left, not fourth!)

I’ve been told it gets worse as they hit 3!

So, new middle ring (narrow/wide), chainring bolts and *touch wood*, that’s all.

Yep, it’s a 9 speed. XTR rear mech certainly pre-clutch!), cassette, front mech and rapid fires. Chain’s a cheapish SRAM.

Great help as I expect! Cheers STW’ers.

    Thanks.

It’s short family rides, 90% on road and 10% fireroad type stuff. I’ll see if I can get some ‘narrow’ chain ring bolts (I live in Thailand) but if the chain’s jumping off, get the folks to bring some kind of guide out at Easter.

We went for a ride a minute ago, the bike stayed in the middle ring at the front and my wife was more than happy with the gearing.

I was unpleasantly surprised at the cost on CRC of some AM / DH chain guide set-ups!

Thanks again for all the replies.

edit: beat me to it. The 16″ looks like it’s an ugly angle, but much better. 1×9 it is! Thanks a lot.
I’m still interested in those photos paladin, even if it’s only for interest’s sake!

    A pic would be great.

I’m pretty much decided on 1×9 speed though. My wife kinda likes riding but certainly isn’t a biker… if we’re riding together she’ll ask frequently which finger or thumb does what to the gears. She enjoys 1 hour family rides but doesn’t wake up in the morning and think about dusty trails!

    So, without the front mech / shifter;

Do I need a chainguide or equivalent and if so, can you recommend a cheap one?

Do I need anything other than narrower chainring bolts?

    Thanks

    makecoldplayhistory
    Free Member

    Yep. It’s a triple. The frame’s 14″.

What do you mean, “correct mech / shifter”? It’s an XTR rapid fire shifter and top pull mech. They worked fine on the Cannondale they came off (although with an XTR crank).

    Yep, locking the mech in place is the cheapest way. I’ll change my question to;

“What do I need to make my bike a 1×9 speed? I want to use the middle ring of the crank on there and remove the other two rings, mech and shifter for neatness. I know I need smaller chainring bolts for a single ring on the crank. Do I need anything else? Is a chain guide / retainer absolutely necessary? If so, what cheap one can you recommend? It’s my wife’s bike and is used for light XC and road commuting.”

Thanks for the rply Paladin. What shifter / mech / crank do you have? Is it all SLX?

    Thanks

doc. when you say ‘look at you[r] forks’, you mean measure the diameter of the dropouts?

The new hub is a ‘standard’ (whatever that means, nowadays) QR hub. I’ll look at the conversion.

The issue is, when I’m back in the UK to get the new wheel, my bike and forks will be in Asia.

Pay off loans / debts sensibly. Look at moving debts around to reduce the interest payed.

For the wife and I, the best thing we did (began a few years ago as newly-weds) was, withdraw your money for the month on pay day and put it in envelopes.

    For example,

    week 1 fun
    week 1 food
    week 1 petrol
    week 1 taxi money
    week 2 fun
    week 2 food
    ……………………
    month elec.
    month water
    month car insurance

    etc

When you can see it, you appreciate where it’s going. You also understand where your spending can be cut back. For example, I bought a can of coke most afternoons after work. That was £120 a year; it all mounts up!

That’s in Thailand now. Left the Philippines last September.

The maid costs are per month and cleaning cooking whilst my son does a morning at school and then child care after his nap time.

All of those costs are per month.

I don’t have a GBP symbol on my keyboard, but

    600 rent
    80 food
    40 fuel
30 milk (thirsty 2 year old)
    300 maid salary
    15 car tax / insurance
    60 electricity
    10 gas / phone / internet water
    50 misc.
70 budgeted for beer, meals out etc

that’s from approx 70k p/a income after tax.

Devon, Ireland (Co. Derry) and a weekend in Paris.

I can’t wait. Thailand’s brilliant but nothing like home. Unfortunately, my excellent (if I saw so myself) ppt presentation explaining to my wife why I should take my bike home for 6 weeks fell flat :(

You might be able to make an image of the first drive onto a third drive (whilst #2 is the boot drive) with something like

Have you tried going into the BIOS changing the boot order of the disks (press either F2 or Del during POST) as suggested by papamountain?

It sounds to me like a) your c: drive has died b) the BIOS setting have changed.

Can you boot into that secondary install with your first drive (the one playing up) attached as a storage device?

With the computer turned off, make sure that all power and data cables to drives and the motherboard are properly seated.

I drive an auto and usually keep my foot on the brake when stopped in traffic. It’s a tall pick up too so suspect the lights are in peoples eyes.

I hadn’t even considered it could be a problem before. I’ll do my best to remember from now on.

I lived in Manila (Philippines) for 5-6 years. No MTB riding to speak of and road riding made road riding in London look tame. It was rubbish.

Moved to Thailand in September, bought (and brought) a new bike and love it. I’m healthier, happier and my little boy screams with joy when he sees the Wee Ride being fitted.

I’m not sure if I love or hate the looks of the Cotic. Without a test ride though, it’s the one I’d take from that line up.

The issue is, hard tails are by far the best looking bikes.

FWIW, (I’ve skim read through the posts)

WE have a Maxi-Cosy seat – can’t find a link to the exact one). It’s not ISO Fix (but neither’s the car).

Our son screamed and screamed from the second he was in his rear facing car seat until he was lifted out. He also seemed to get travel sick.

When he was about 1 year old, we put him in the forward facing seat and he loves it. He can see out of the window , chatting away and enjoys the car. Ours can be fixed forwards or backwards. Surely there are ISO Fix seats that can too.

Oh, and the chance of a child (under 16) dying in the UK as the occupant of a car is 0.00000035. Five times more likely in a forward facing seat is 0.00000175.
