Amazing! Thanks @makecoldplayhistory have sent you a quick email.

@gears_suck and @Boardinbob. I have noted that down. If I have to resort to that on my honeymoon then clearly something has gone wrong 😉

Hey there

Quotes are coming in around the £400-£450 range to have the seat tube completely replaced and the frame and forks repainted.

For some additional cost I could have a disc brake mount braised on. Argos advise that it can be done for the rear wheel but not for the front i.e. can’t add it to the forks.

Stripping the frame – I don’t even know where to start on that one? Is it easy to do? Time to search the forum for advice on that I guess. Sounds like a good starter for 10. Strip, assess if any of the other tubes are wrecked then I know how much exposure I’m at.

I guess for £400-£450 its very much a question of how much do I like this bike vs what could I get to replace it with. Decisions decisions decisions.

Thanks for all the input – some really useful suggestions in the thread!

@ghostlymachine

Donohue I don’t believe makes frames anymore, the website is dead but you can see old versions of it on waybackmachine.

The downtube looks bespoke, its a strange ovalised tube that for the 90s must have been pretty innovative.

@nedrapier I’ll let you know what Argos say. I imagine you should do as I’ve done and send them some photos.

Great – I’ll send some photos of to Dave Yates as well and see if he knows anything about the brand/can help! Great suggestion!

Thanks guys – I’ve emailed a couple now to see what they think. Responses so far…

– Bike Fix

In short they don’t think its economical or possible to repair as they fear the rest of the tubes will be in the same condition. To my untrained eyes the rest of the frame looks fine so as they are only 20 mins away in central london I may wheel it over to see what they think

– Bob Jackson Cycles (found on google )

Super quick response! In summary they say its possible…

I’m guessing the reason this has failed is no drain hole in shell and water has sat in bottom of seat tube. This would require a new seat tube which we would bronze weld into place This repair is quoted with 631 tube, If you want 853 we can do this.

Thanks @lovewookie

I’ve pinged them, and another company called Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol an email to see if they can help.

Would love other recommendations if anyone has them.

@cranberry – Yeah we bought it off Gumtree so it must be around 6 years old and out of warranty.

@rubber_buccaneer – Yeah ours does the same however, we’ve checked and its not the switch/the door being left open. The beeping only happens when the freezer temperature is showing too high (-4), even though the temperature is actually OK (-18)

@mav12 – There are other forums?

Mac
Free Member

@cranberry – I’m sure they would but as its so expensive to get them out I thought I’d see if its possible to fix myself. When I call them for advice they simply want to send out a service representative…

@Cougar – I think you’re right. In my mind, the thermostat simply allows a current to flow if it is not cold enough, allowing the motor to start and the temperature to go down. When its at -18 degrees, it stops the current flowing and the motor to stop. Assuming the thermometer in the freezer isn’t wrong then would it make more sense if the circuit board that is taking the reading from the thermostat has a fault?

Thanks for the replies

I love my MacBook Pro and would highly recommend it.

As a UK student you get up to 16% off (I believe MacBook Pro is 14% on average) + free AppleCare insurance for Mac if you buy via the official apple website.

Thanks bajscyckel,

I’m loading up the bike with Alpkit’s Stingray framebag, a bar bag from Porcelain Rocket kindly borrowed off a friend and most likely a Tiger seatpack (although I haven’t bought this yet) from Wildcat Gear. I’ve also heard good things about the fueltanks from Bikepack.eu however I’m going to do a bit more research first before purchasing.

Thanks for the advice however, I will be managing the property from London so I’m hoping to manage from a distance through an agency. Thanks for the suggestions – does anyone else have any input?

The issue I see with old tatty bikes is also…

I don’t like riding old tatty bikes.

Call me an idiot but who rides a crap bike to work without wanting to spend money on it. I agree with your point that its just going to cost money and suck when it also eventually gets nicked…

Urgh.

Again thanks for all the posts

Hi all,

Thanks for all the input. I actually like Junkyards idea a lot as I could keep my nice road bike at work (which has secure basement storage) and then get something cheap but which works to get my to/from work.

While I appreciate Bromptons (and love the design) I don’t really want one – it does make sense though. The bikebag idea may work for somepeople but every day up and down the stairs would just be a giant pain in my ass!

Thank you for all the suggestions.

Now – anyone got an old cheapo road frame they want to send my way for a needy 5ft 10 commuter? 😉

Hi all,

– Yup the house isn’t perfect bike wise but everything else is (including the price)
– I agree with you – in my head keeping bikes infront of houses is literally like putting a sign up saying “STEAL ME!”
– I hadn’t researched insurance yet but I see your point z1ppy, that was going to be my next stw search/post
– The trickiest bit is my other half – she is sold on the house and it looks like I’m going to have to put my foot down and can the idea (based on bikes). Urgh.

Apologises in advance – This should probably have been placed on the Bike Forum (my only excuse is I’m still waiting for the first coffee of the day to kick in). If its a big deal can one of the forum mods move it over?

Thanks.

Ha!

I want to check out Rigby and Peller after CaptainFlashheart’s recommendation however I’m currently hurtling to London on a train and may get some strange looks if I bring up page after page of underwear on the screen!

Mhm I’m not quite student level but more fighting for my first job in the big city level. She’s certainly worth the money.

Thanks esmsz – thats exactly the type of advice I was looking for! The image above is Calvin and I thought it was nice – is it poor quality or do girls just perceive it as being crap?

P.s. its all eye wateringly expensive as far as I can see!

I was right. 3.5 reasonable threads later and we’re already mentioning rapists!

Thanks for all the replies soo far. I’m trying to do something nice for her (although I don’t think any guy buys underwear for their other half without at some point thinking they’d like to see her wear it/take it off – how is that possible!) however I don’t want her to feel cheap.

Just had a look at figleaves – some nice stuff on there, thanks for the suggestion.

Hey!

I’m pretty sure its coming from the valve (yup I have run the machine while it was open and it seemed to bubble out of this valve).

I’m wondering if its a pressur release valve and that it could be caused by a blocking/scaling causing there to be too much pressure (it leaks both when you have a capsule in and when you don’t) so I’m going to try descaling again.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Scotia,

Sorry to steal you away from this thread however could you look at my old thread which I’ve since updated and see if you can identify why the coffee machine is broken?

Thanks!

Hey all,

The descale did not do the trick so I went in. If you’ve ever wondered whats inside a Nespresso machine this should give you a good idea!

Essentially the source of the leak is coming from what looks like a little valve at the back of the mechanism which holds the capsule. I’ve tried to indicate it clearly in the following pictures. At this point I can’t work out why it would leaks and was wondering if anyone (Hi Scotia) could help me?

I initially thought it would be where the pipe which brings the water up to the upper mechanism joins that would be the source of the leak however I don’t believe this to be the case anymore. The valve is def where the water comes from. Does anyone know what the valve is there to do? Relieve excess pressure by letting water escape?

Any thoughts? As of now its probably heading for the bin unless anyone has some bright ideas. Shame.

Hey Beanum,

Just for future knowledge I already checked that and if its warranty then obviously they replace it free, if not then its £59 to repair plus postage costs. They did send me a descaling kit for free which I thought was great so overall I’m very impressed by their customer service.

The leak only happens with a capsule in so hopefully the descale will do the trick and its only the extra pressure causing a seal to fail.

How do you know soo much Scotia? I’m tempted to believe you either work for the company that builds the machines or you are some sort of Nespresso God. I’m willing to believe either.

Please don’t be sorry, thats the best overview I’ve had so far so thank you (and everybody else) for your input.

I’ll try the descale then I’m going in. I found this excellent site and am now looking for a tool to get past the oval heads.

Best,

Douglas

Hi Scotia,

Sorry for the delay – I had a good play about with it. So in summary…

The water is not coming out the bottom of it as I previously thought. Instead if you take out the capsule tray and look in (as shown in the picture below) it is coming out of there. The water is hot but clear. It fills up the spill tray before eventually overflowing onto the kitchen worksurface.

Any thoughts? (thats other than the machine needs a good clean!)

We live in central Scotland and our water isn’t very hard (unlike some of the locals!) hence why its lasted soo long I guess.

Hi Scotia – give me five minutes while I go and flood the kitchen worksurface again.

After speaking with Nespresso it appears that the most likely issue is that the machine needs de-scaled (perhaps not surprising after five years use). They have popped a descaling kit through the post and if that doesn’t work it looks like I’ll need to send it to them for repair.
