    :-)

Strava does come up with some old billy bolx at times. Garmin Connect reckons 40.5mph which would be more likely.

DrP what’s wrong with those shorts? ;-)

I asked a similar question last month

Nice as the Middleburns look, the pricing really doesn’t do it for me

Damn James that doesn’t sounds good :(

Hope you can get some fluids and food back in you soon.

@ Toby. I found that Surrey Classic incident just embarrassing :D

Cheers DrP for organising and to everyone that rode. 8)

    Picton, hope you’re feeling better?

The final climb seemed to go on for ever (so a typical SD chalk track then) and I really could have done with 30 X 36 as opposed to 34 X 32. Toby had a puncture mid way down the final descent and we discovered the wind had swung round to the NE, which made the final few miles a bit of a grind.

Great to ride with new peeps and do a different part of the country. Wisley common and airfield were probably the strangest bits, mainly for their remoteness, despite being bordered by the M25 and A3.

Oh and the Pro race was perfectly timed

Dunno if you’re off roading and apols in advance if you already know this, but I there’s an off road segment up the Beacon

You can either ride E 0.8 mile down the B2112 to Ditchling and meet there, or pedal W 1 mile and get ‘my’ train at Hassocks at 6:58?

It’ll be a 5 min pedal from Btn station to the pier.

Palace pier at 7:30 is still the plan, nothing like pointlessly cycling 13 15 miles in the wrong direction to set you up for the day.

So a bit like last year then?

I’ll be getting the train down to Btn this year. :-)

    Will mail you my details.

Are we still departing Palace Pier at 7:30?

TimP Where are you staying as that sounds pretty close to chez Anton?

Can you give me more details of who you used? We’ve got a NY – New Hampshire trip lined up soon which is probably going to end up at around 1500 miles of driving.

I’ve had SKS guards go south on the rear brake bridge clamp and rivets fail. – Did I fit install the rivets?

I swapped out a load of bits on my Arkose 4, including getting some Crosslight wheels which were noticeably lighter.

Oh and based on the crank rub so far and the 50 tooth ring being too big for off roading, I should have changed the chain set as well.

I got a TCR Advanced SL frame a couple of years ago and have been very pleased with it.

If I was to do it again, I’d probably lean towards the Propel as I prefer a horizontal top tube for aesthetic reasons . Would need to be comfortable with the brake set up though.

DrP can you email me as above?

I’ve just been looking at the (NCN20) route up the A23 corridor, which is a bit more direct. However I don’t know the route north of Crawley and now’s probably not the time to start looking at alternate routes!

Have done a couple of their XC races and the ’13 Insomnia.

They were nice low key ‘club’ events without any pretensions or particularly big fields 8).

Hoon around the race course and then go spend another 1 – 2 hours around the rest of the centre afterwards.

Assuming it’s the same race course area, it’s mainly narrowtrack through trees and fairly twisty. There are wider sections to pass people though.

    Should be good for this.

Just need to work out the to and from Brighton bits. That could add another 30 miles to the trip so may start from HH.

DrP can you email me at mikeanton @ hotmail .com?

If I’ve understood that, does that translate as we’re going to pay £31million more to pass the buck and have someone else to blame? :?:

Or have I completely missed the mark?

Recently got a Arkose 4 as a middling N+1. Immediately swapped the post, saddle, stem, bars, wheels and 50 ring.

Tripsters look great but what about an Enigma Etape or Burls equivalent if you don’t want to be a Kinesis fanboi?

Did look at the stainless Croix Der Fer which looked very nice and elegant but over budget for what it’ll be used for.

    Half baked empirical comment ahoy

I’ve got a 2004 set of Zondas which have been faultless if now not a little tired.

In that time I’ve had two Mavic Aksium rears fail in the spoke flanges. Not had any problems with other lower end wheels in that time.

Make of that what you will.

    @BB again

Typical terrain is ncn / bridleway / SDW stuff so if you’re rating the xplors for such routes, they should be good enough for me!

That said I am a big gear, out of the saddle grinder so do prefer rear tyres with more tread.

    @TD

We used to run a London League X race and our course was either dusty and rock hard with rooty copse sections or the Somme with slippery rooty copse sections! I never raced them (far too much effort)

    @BB

Those Xplors look to have quite a dense tread pattern. Are they these ones? – http://clementcycling.com/xplor-mso

    Proper CX or PoncyCX?

Err not sure of the difference? If proper CX = having your legs ripped off and shoved down your throat in a CX race then I’ll be firmly in the poncyCX camp

Cycling things I have no desire to try (too much like hard work imho)
    1 CX race
    2 Road race
    3 Use a turbo

    Cheers folks

Bike came with KSB8s but didn’t look that good a tread so I’ve not actually ridden them.

Not tried tubeless on my MTBs as it looks like a recipe for a cackhandedspanneringdisaster! I think I’ll stay away for the time being.

Will have a look at the Vittoria and OnOne / Challenge options

As an aside, older houses give plenty of scope for historical research (if that’s your thing).

Back when GW2 was kicking off in 2003, I did some research on our place at the turn of the century. There was a family of 5 living in what would have effectively been a 3 room house and one of the boys died in WWI.

In one of those curiously affecting things, I discovered he’d died in the siege of Kut al Amara, more or less as we were storming back up through Iraq.

We’ve flogged filters to death  so I’ll move on to tripods.

Don’t waste your money buying something ‘that’ll do’.

Paying for what you get never rings more true with tripods and I’d strongly urge you to start the budget at £100.

A cheap noodly POS is going to flap around in the slightest breeze be very frustrating. So much so that you won’t bother taking it out and thus defeating the point of buying one in the first place.

Also why would you plonk £X amount of expensive camera gear on a twig?

[/start internet willywaving with tripod pron]

    This shot

was taken in a howling gale. Camera was sat on one of these, sheltered in a gun emplacement and weighted down and yet it still rocked about

Concur with dooosuk. Brickwork is pretty sloppy in places and would have been made from local materials where ever possible. That said it’s been up 120ish years and the only visible cracks are in the 1970’s extension.

Ceilings / some internal walls are lathe and plaster which can require some careful drilling.

Previous owners put cavity insulation in though the gap only looks to be a inch or so between skins.

I think our neighbours are nosier than usual but I was disappointed at the lack of sound proofing.

Damp no worse than the 19030’s flat we had previously.

To continue the theme of matching stuff, one of my road bikes has a white ‘wet look’ Ritchey stem though I can’t for love nor money find a white stem cap.

Some white spacers would be nice as well whilst we’re at it.

Full sus has Thomson stem and post with Easton carbon bars. T’other mtbs are Thomson stem only

Sorry Graham, I should have qualified the VED tax goes into the general tax pot and it’s from this that the trunk roads are paid for. Your graph is a useful reminder of where our Poll tax goes

The only hypothecated tax I can think of is the TV License

    m1kea

Picking up on GrahamS’ previous comments, my understanding of the current taxation system is that all local roads, pavements etc are paid for out of local council taxes.

Only major trunk roads and motorways are paid for with ‘VED tax’ and this new system will be no different.

How about we introduce a system whereby non residents of a particular county council get charged for using local roads? It’d be fair, if not a tad complicated to enforce!

I think there’s about 3cm of spacers under my (90mm) stem. Certainly brings the front up though it didn’t stop me from 5heting myself down some chalky SDW descents: – Found I had to brake on the drops rather than on the hoods.

A shorter stem would probably improve off road control but I think I’d find it too cramped for the longer (road) sections of a ride.

Oh and I found the Shimano hydro hoods longer than their usual STis.

Defo need 3aH batteries regardless of the colour of the body.

Can’t go wrong with a cordless drill but recip saws can be great fun if you want to spend time thinking up things to chop up.
