I did a short route yesterday, coming over from listonshiels (west) to Threipmuir Reservoir.
It started of pretty crisp, but just as I started heading back towards Wester Bavelaw (using Bing Maps to get these names!), the mud was terrible and very very sticky.
When I got back to Threipmuir, the temp dropped and it went back to mostly crispy ground and not much ice around there.
Threipmuir was frozen enough for me to cycle 7-8 foot out from the edge, but there was a lot of cracking ice sounds. I was half expecting to go through at any time, but made it all the way along, I was on my Fatty though, so a thinner tired bike may have gone through.

Its quite warm and sunny today, so I would guess a fair bit of the ice may have melted.

    Thats rubbish news.

I have several friends who have lost dozens of bikes over the years, most of which have been stolen from pretty secure garages, one of them had close to £10000 worth of bikes stolen over night while he was in the house!
The sad news is, if they/the pieces of shit want something, almost nothing you can do will stop them, only slow them down.

I bought myself a £25 run around from Gumtree, and thats the only bike that I will lock up outside. If someone does steal it, then I wont be to bothered about it, as long as they don’t knacker the lock because thats worth more than the bike.

As others have said, keep an eye on Gumtree/ebay for your bike, and get yourself into some of the second hand bike shops around Edinburgh as they sometimes try and sell them in there and the guys who work in the shops are quite used to spotting dodgy deals, and I know people have got their bikes back that way.

0.05mm! I probably make a deeper score in my seat posts to mark the hight, and have done for years.
Pass/sell them on, they’ll be fine.

You would be better getting a 40/42t adaptor instead of just dropping two teeth at the front.

I take it you weren’t there the year that the marquee blew down and everyone had to be towed on to the camping field by a tractor? Oh how I wish we had taken better insurance on that hire car. :-/

    It’ll work out. Good luck.

    Ah, good times…

That was a good year for ice too.

I really need to get back up there for another go sometime.

I spent years and years trying to find the best gloves/combo, then a month ago, I bought these.
I only usually have to put a thin pair of gloves on when it gets below freezing 🙂

Not 6200 lumens of course, 2500 more like

Na, more like less than 1000.

And yes, they’ll be recycled laptop batteries that the place you bought them from hope will last long enough so as you cant claim your money back.
There is a reason these light sets are dirt cheap.

As above, but it is not unusual for the Chinese to use nearly knackered laptop batteries.

Get overshoes and proper thick and long wool socks and make sure your shoes are not tight.
You don’t say what is on your legs.
If your legs aren’t warm, then the blood going to your feet aren’t going to be either.
For cold road rides, I wear leg warmers and 3/4 winter bibs over them, thick wool socks that cover my calves and overshoes.

Ive had my Fatty for 6 weeks now and put just over 700 miles on it, not touched any of my other bikes since I got it.
I regularly look at the 2.4″ tyres Ive got on my 29’er and think they’re really skinny!

I have now got a rear rack and my full length carbon mudguards on it, and it just does everything I ask of it.

Only thing with fat bikes, big fat tyres do NOT like thick mud, for obvious reasons.
While it can be a pain trying to get grip climbing on mud, when you start to go downhill on mud, its like you’ve just had 40 pints and jumped straight on the bike for a ride, but its so uncontrollable, it is actually very funny trying to stay upright, well I find it funny anyway!

But, as others have said, you can just get a spare set of 29’er wheels made up if you wanted an easier day of riding.

For those on a budget or who want to try a 40 & 42t without the cost of buying two cogs, I have just gone for this at £12.50 delivered adaptor of an stw member.
He has sold quite a few on ebay and everyone seems very happy with theirs.

Ive had a Dakota 20 for quite a few years now and I got it for some planned touring because I could take spare battery’s with me.
It worked great for me, it is very bulky though.

If you have somewhere to charge your gps everyday, then something less bulky with a built in battery would be my choice.

I don’t know about any of the glitches, but what I have learned over the years from “software updates”, don’t use them if your device is working fine, they usually make things worse!

I got my Ashima’s on ebay, you can get a pair delivered for less than £20 within a couple of weeks.
Ive got 160’s on my 29’er and not had any issues and I am about to order a couple more for other bikes.

Yeah, very good because big name branded carbon forks never break!
You will ALWAYS find some sort of carbon breakage if you search for it.
Thousands and thousands of people buy and use cheap Chinese carbon, myself included, and we have yet to die or get injured.

As with any product, just check it over properly before use.

Its been a while, so I though I’d update this thread.

While the Bottecchia was my preferred bike, I ended up getting a Limited Edition OO Fatty when they had their 20% everything period.

For anyone interested in the Bottecchia, it was looking like it would be around £600 to get it to my door, thats shipping from Spain/Italy.
I did manage to find out that there were in fact a few shops in the UK getting them in, but apparently they were all sold out, despite the fact I got told the UK price was around £700 which didn’t make them very good value compared to the Double Scoop!

I have now had my Fatty for around a month and Im loving it!
I can now go almost anywhere I want and the amount of grip available is surprising. On my 29’er, the grip runs out well before my legs, but its the other way around on the Fatty and because of that, I am now looking to fit a 40/42T on the back so I can climb straight up the side of mountains, well…big steep hills.

Its fast on the road too, Im not sure if you guys above are running low pressures on the road, but I put mine up to 20psi and have no problem keeping up with my weekly winter road gang and thats on the Floaters.

The only thing its lacking is a bigger gear. 38×11 has me spinning like mad at 30mph, so that could hamper me keeping up with the fast summer chaingang group if there is a tailwind, but it should certainly help get my cadence up.

Here is my Fatty, it now has Front and rear home made carbon mudguards, and few other changes means this weighs in around 17kg, which is the same as the bike it has now replaced.

To everyone who has bought a Fatty, can you check your drive side BB seal and see if it has moved?
It seems the shaft/spindle is too long and the plastic bearing protector moves outwards exposing the bearing to the elements!
I have used a zip tie to act as a spacer to keep it in, but I am not really happy about having to do it with a new bike!

Well, its been a few days and I have now just finished the front.

cokie, just Googling “carbon kits” brings up a few results for the different places you can buy stuff.
I bought most of my stuff from easycomposites, they have another website with a different name, not sure why.

The kits are pretty cheap and usually have enough carbon to get you going with smallish projects, but if you did need more carbon, it doesn’t really cost much at all.
I found getting a square mtr of 600g carbon was only a few pounds more than 200g!

I took a few more pictures of the making of the front:
This is the main meter long x5″-7″ piece with a few extra pieces for added strength because there wont be as many fixing points as I had on the back~

All pieces together, wetted (with resin) and wrapped in film ready to go in the mould/tyre~

The next day, out of the mould and trimmed (poorly!), its on the bike~

I used a thicker plastic builders bag as the film that goes between the carbon and the tyre this time, but it didn’t work in smoothing out the finish, it actually made it a bit worse!
You can see on the edges where the thick’ish bag and carbon couldn’t compress enough against the tyre and have left small ridges/lines.
I was just thinking (a bit late for that!) that if I put the tyre on the wheel and inflated it there, then I am pretty sure the extra pressure I could get that way, would have made a better outer finish, the inside looks great and almost professional!
I made the arms for the fork attachment quite thick, because they aren’t allowed to move much when in position.
One thing I have found while doing these, is that using a heat gun will soften the carbon (once its set) and make it reasonably mould-able, unfortunately, the arms were just a bit too thick for that and I couldn’t get them to wrap around the fork neatly, so I will make a slightly thinner piece and use that to mould around the fork and attach that to the thicker piece to make it look a bit nicer.

I know there are people on this forum vastly more experienced than me when it comes to carbon stuff, but if you want any help or need tips, just ask away 🙂

    Oh, tyre clearance.
There doesn’t look much, but I have been out in the deeeep snow and sploshed through lots of mud and I have had no problems….yet.
Im sure the lack of tread on the Floater helps because not much sticks to it.

Sand bikes are pretty much the same as the other fatties around that price.
If you want a fattie to just play on occasionally and you have no intention of upgrading, then thats your bike.
It has a 7sp screw on block, so you would need a new wheel if you wanted to fit a cassette.

I bought one for my 10 year old nephew and he is not getting it.
It needs a huge amount of patience and control, it took me at least a dozen trys before I started to get the hang of it, plus the batterys only last around 5mins.

They’re are a great idea if you know the kid/person getting it has the patience.

£100! Does that not slightly defeat the purpose of buying a budget fat bike?

Just remember, they’re just generic carbon parts that they then put the fake manufacturers stickers on to make them more saleable.
I bought a what I thought was just a basic cheap carbon road frame/forks of ebay several years ago, I didn’t know it was a copy/mould of a Pinarello Prince until my mate told me.
The frame and myself are still in one piece, I have done around 4000 miles on it including racing.

Fakes/copys sometimes fail and so do big brand names products fail, its almost down to luck, but when buying anything carbon, just give it a very good check over before use, if you can.
There are far more pictures of brand name fails than fakes!

As some of you I am sure are using non-protected battery’s, at least make sure they’re all the same age and capacity.
DON’T mix cells in packs and charge them together, if you do, you’re really asking for trouble.

You’ll probably find them on ebay for one or two pounds, and delivery should take a few weeks.
I just ordered this, but it’ll probably take a month or more to arrive.

I’ll look on the parcel. If it’s far enough away as to not get a brick in the window I will at least report to EBay.

The reply you got sounds a bit like they’re Chinese. Check out where the actual shop is because a lot of Chinese sellers have UK listed addresses/warehouses, so you are not likely to have any issues with bricks!
