First rides on new Specialized Epic and Epic EVO

IME Maxxis have consistently come up small for as long as I can remember.
I’ve just built a SS play bike out of old (really old) spares and stuck an old Butcher 2.3 DH on the front and High Roller 2.5 dual ply on the back. The Maxxis is smaller.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberWent to our local place yesterday evening where I haven’t ridden in far too long.
Ran straight into a stump in a fast corner and had a proper over-the-bars dismount. Fortunately I landed back on the smoothish track again and slid a few feet on my front, then the bike landed on me. I ache like a bastard today..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberIf there’s mud within a half mile he’ll sniff it out and be in there..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberMission 704a run off an Arcam AVR300 in bi-amp mode and a Marantz CD52. Not subtle but it really kicks and was a cheap set up, certainly in hi-fi terms.
Speakers were new 15 years ago. CD player and amp were second hand. Under £400 all in with cables.
Other rig is Tannoy m3, Marantz 2226b, Philips CD104, Dual 505-2. Beautiful, just beautiful. I’m sure some higher end speakers would improve it though.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI know this is a
sillyquestion but i need some silly answersDunno. But I’d like to think I’m more into the rallying version of mountain biking. I ride in short stages, often sideways and crash a lot..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberSchwalbe generally seem to come out big and light for a 2.5. I don’t know the ins and outs of many particular models though.
I recently put a 24×3.00 Halo Contra on the front of my dick-around bike. The massive tread is good fun.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberYour description along with repair quote of £2600 says to me that the shell is fine. You start pricing up all new parts and then put paint and labour on top and it comes to a lot of money very quickly.
Take a peek at the roof, under the load area carpet and at the panel gaps round the back of the rear doors, any shell distortion should show up there.
Personally I’d buy it back and fix it yourself if that’s possible. I always look at buying another car as buying a ton of unknown maintenance and new potential problems.
Or, buy a good, clean salvage Octavia the same colour with light front end or side damage and use the bits off yours to fix it..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberIt’s been a poor year for me too due to recovering from a broken back and trying to overcome the associated massive loss of fitness and strength.
The majority of the cycling I’ve done has been round fire roads with the dog in tow. Got out to Cardinham for the first and second time, bored of that already. Done a couple of loops other places and a day down-hilling.
So probably 150 miles all in but I’ve loved every minute.. No, actually a lot of it has been painful, agonising misery but it’s great to be riding again.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberBig pickup, drivers no doubt a murderer or rapist.
Oh come on. There’s no need to be prejudiced.
They could be both.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberFind me somewhere in Cornwall where there’s few people & you can park for free for a couple of hours, near the coast.
Yeah that killed it..
Erm.. there’s a cool little beach called Wanson Mouth between Widemouth Bay and Milook, the path’s hidden by some bushes but you can park on the wide bit of road just opposite it and wander down. There aren’t any shops, toilets or ice cream trucks so the masses stay away.
There are loads of beaches like this around Cornwall, you just need an OS map and a sense of adventure (read several failed attempts and lots of futile walking).
lazlowoodbineFree MemberThank you Jeff, that was just the sort of thing I’ve been looking for. But the 2009 is quite different unfortunately.
Yes the reach is a concern, I’m not sure about some of the things happening with new bikes but I certainly welcome the long front ends that seem to be more common now. The Commencal would be solely for our own downhill-lite trails and the few local tracks, including Gawton. This would be my first proper bouncy bike, I’m a hardtail sort really and will carry on using them for everything else.
Thank you for the offer of trying yours for size rabbit. But I’m in Cornwall so unless go, go, gadget leg works this try I’ll have to pass. I’ll see how this particular one I’m looking at works out and let you know if I’m interested in yours.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberAh, I should have said that it’s a frame only and it’s miles away from me.
Good point about the length. It would be my “DH” bike so I’m not worried about sitting down and pedaling it but even so I don’t like feeling cramped.
18″ does sound too big to be s/m size doesn’t it?
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI’ve got 26×2.25 Nobby Nic front and Racing Ralph 26×2.1 rear (both Performance, tubed) on my old featherweight XC hardtail. It certainly doesn’t feel draggy.
The Racing Ralph looks barely any narrower than the 2.35 High Roller 1 on another bike with wider rims.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberStill, it’s an excuse to get another tool, and that’s always a good thing.
Yes!
My tools are probably worth as much my car and bikes put together.
That’s got to be a sign of something, something odd..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI don’t know as I enjoy the work per se. But I really like knowing that my bike is ready to ride. So overall, yes.
Same with the car. I do all the work on it myself. Have just rebuilt the suspension at both ends and set up the geometry (now that’s fun). Crawling around on the floor getting mud and wotnot in my eyes is the work and having it drive properly is the reward.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberThey are still not on “your” land so you don’t own them.
If you want to get all possessive build trails on your own fenced off land.In the title I used parenthesizes to show that I didn’t mean “your” in a literal way, i.e denoting legal ownership. What are you using them for? Genuine question, not being a grammar pedant.
People here are talking about having a little respect for others hard work, not actual ownership. You appear so intent on having arguments rather than a debate that you don’t even read posts properly.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI wasn’t looking for condemnation of anyone who dare dig on a trail I built.
I just wanted to know if it was felt reasonable to ask them to build their own and enjoy the existing ones as they are. As I see it the positives would be numerous; They get just what they to ride trails which are just as they wanted them. The other builders gets to do the same and everyone benefits by there being more trails to ride. More variety and more riding.
I am grateful for the use of the land, I don’t see why that means I shouldn’t have an opinion on etiquette.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberNerp.
EDIT:
This is probably more use;

lazlowoodbineFree MemberSummer holidays isn’t it?
Aha, yes I suppose it is.
If I could train some eager little new-trail-building minions my master plan may finally come to fruition, wooo ha ha ha etc..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberHmmm, yes I can see that. I’d much rather work together definitely. But that takes a bit of mutual respect. Something that people who take the hard work of others for granted don’t strike me as having.
As I say I don’t know how many different people/groups go down there. Not enough to regularly run into each other at least. If I can find out who’s doing it I will talk to them, I’m certainly not going to kick off about some dirt.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI no nothing of the Eastons but my X-Fusion has an air valve to tune the nut cracking function.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI just went from a 2.25 Nobby Nic Performance to a 2.35 Muddy Mary Vertstar Evo TL Snakeskin (the Germans could’ve made that all into one word shirley?) on my heavily built 456.
Hugely different tyres granted. But even on the fairly straight bits on anything other than smooth hard soil the extra grip outweighs any drag penalty giving more directional stability and allowing me to put the hammer down instead of working for grip.
PS. I got the MM Vertstar cheap, I would have had Trailstar out of choice. I think I could actually see the tread wearing away as I rode on tarmac..
lazlowoodbineFree MemberThe saw blade usage is brilliant!
That looks like a really nice job.
I like the jig, does it really say “k-nore hole” on it?
lazlowoodbineFree MemberHey Poop 2 da Scoop, how are these holding up?
Have you scratched or gouged them on anything yet? I was wondering what colour they were underneath (I’m assuming the plastic’s not coloured throughout but “painted”).
It’s just I was looking at a set in either black or white and figured I go for which ever would stay looking the best after some
abuseuse.lazlowoodbineFree Member3rdly – The bike was insured for £1400, but had literally just been serviced (1/2 hr before), was in mint condition and very low mileage. I can’t find another for anywhere near the same price and condition, mostly £300-£400 dearer. Will we only get the £1400 or will we be able to argue the difference somehow? Our own insurance policy has legal assist, but as we’re using the claims management company, will they fight as hard?
If that was an “agreed value” then I don’t know how it works, never had one.
If it’s what they say is market value then argue it. Don’t rely only on dealers prices as they will say that you’re not a dealer, yes it’s nonsense but just don’t give them anything to argue with. Get on eBay now and watch all the ones that are ending soon. Get on all the bike sale sites (I don’t know them) and compile a list of that model in similar condition and work out the average price. Argue hard and put in high ball figures as they will try to low ball you.
If you told them it was worth £1400 when you got the quote don’t worry, it doesn’t really mean anything.
Claim management; I’ve never used one but to be honest I’d rather do it myself. With the sheer mind boggling incompetence (not to mention blatant BS) I’ve seen from insurance companies I’d say it’s better to be involved so that any “inaccuracies” can be picked up sooner rather than later and aren’t allowed to snowball.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberTesco Finest dark cooking chocolate; As cheap as Cadbury’s but as nice as Green & Blacks.
I like the 85% stuff now and again but you need tea to wash it down with.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberThe original post should be removed so as to not spread what is clearly distasteful crap further,
There is fundamentally something wrong with you.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberThat’s is some proper cold hearted behaviour. I’m not making excuses but they do sound retarded, let’s just hope they don’t reproduce.
At least they weren’t members of the emergency services…
After arresting a 20-year-old for underage drinking, handcuffing him and watching him drown, officer pleads guilty to a “boating violation.”
lazlowoodbineFree MemberI’ve had stem/headset combos that needed a spacer between the headset and stem. That’s only because the cap was wide and the stem wasn’t flat underneath so they touched where they shouldn’t.
If that’s not the case don’t bother with one.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberIf I ever have to trust someone a long way away I often “happen to mention” that I have family or friends nearby, which I almost invariably don’t. It sounds a bit heavy but I don’t try to intimidate and certainly don’t make it sound that way.
If I’m asked post anything of any value now I insist on bank transfer only. Yes the buyer has to trust me and I’m sure I lose potential customers but it’s just not worth the risk to me.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberRight. I tried a 35mm Fox spring on the shock and I can make it work. My brother also had a 32mm Fox which definitely won’t fit but he said they changed to 35 many a moon ago. It’s amazing how different they look to each other for only a 3mm difference.
So as long as it’s 35mm I.D then I would like it please.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberAh that sounds promising, thank you for the offer. Fox do measure the maximum stroke in a different way to everyone else so it’s quite possibly 1.6. If it is that would be fine.
35mm will fit over the body but might not sit properly on the preload ring and collet. I’ll have a good look at them to see I could make it work and if you wouldn’t mind taking an as accurate as possible measurement of the I.D I’d be most grateful.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberX-Fusion HiLo with a remote here. I bought it used and have only done about 50 miles on it but it seems to work nicely. It’s the only one I’ve ever used so I can’t make any comparisons.
I did have a moderate off and tried to get away from the bike but landed on my stomach on the back of the seat. It was enough to move the seat in the clamp but the post is fine.
lazlowoodbineFree MemberMy brother had a canoe stolen from his place. Being in a small town and thieves being generally a bit thick it didn’t take long to arrange to meet them to buy it. Turns out they had stashed it by the river in a field not 300 yards away..
My brother phoned the police and explained the situation and asked if they could be at the field gate at 19:10, a few minutes after the meeting was to start. At 18:30 they turned up at his place with the canoe. “We recovered your stolen property for you” Bravo, well done, some quality law enforcement there. They just couldn’t be arsed with catching thieves with stolen property, wtf?
On the flip side they weren’t interested in the assault that occurred half an hour later either..
