normal QR skewer works in tension, force is transmitted from dropout through the bearing inner races, central tube to the opposite dropout.

ignoring the actual cam lever mechanism

5mm skewer has an M5 thread which can take the equivalent of about 7 nm in tourque.

9mm through skewer have an m9 thread which should take around 30nm (20 ish for an aluminium skewer)

maxles don’t work in tension, they are a pinned joint and incur bending forces. they are an axle, not a skewer (that only provides tension)

the superstar 9mm though skewer has the same cam lock lever as a 5mm
QR skewer, and thus transmits no more tension, would give no improvment in stiffness. (unless you have a very big thumb)
a 9mm through skewer with nuts at both ends would be better if you carry a spanner.

nylon 66, is what we use for timing chain guides on engines

tough, hard wearing, cheap, low friction

availible in sheet, bar and tube..

    Chase up that gumtree add..

1.Ask to meet seller / view bike with the intention of buying, ideally at sellers address
2.Visually confirm bike is yours. at sellers address / meeting place
bring with you all paper work / photos / frame numbers / crime ref ect
3.Dial 999 there and then, ask for police assitance in retrieving stolen property, and you have sight of the item.

police won’t do detective work for you. they dont have time.
they will however come round in a jiffy if you hand them a conviction on a plate.

Pretty damn sure those are 97’s

i had (and still have) the first production SX’s which came out in 96. these had yellow plastic preload adjusters, black bonded arch lowers with a cantilever boss.

the 97’s had the red top caps, and the 98’s had one piece cast lowers.

Get a postive ID on the location of your stolen bike and call 999.

They’ll be round in a jiffy!!

This is exaclty what we did, to great sucess a couple of weeks ago.

    read on here stolen recovery

Used to do ealing to reading, 31 miles each way, two or three times a week,
The key to sucess was eating enough food during the day at work so as not to bonk out on the last few miles on the way home.

mainly flat, so rode a bob jackson fixed wheel road bike 47-16 about £300 worth of bike.

I then got a new job up in northampton, used to ride to watford get the train up and ride home, 85mile round trip, i bought a felt f85 road bike for this…

looking back, it was a bit nuts!!

The bike was temporarily residing at a flat share on St Leonard’s Avenue in Hove, but was stolen during a house burglary in Redhill, Surrey..

The seller was going to be charged with handling stolen goods, or if he genuinely did not know it was stolen, he must identify the person he “bought” the bike from.

We basically did the ground work for the police and handed them a conviction on a platter, I doubt the outcome would have been the same if we had simply given the police the gumtree advert, and left it to them.

The more bikes that get recovered, and thieves / buyers convicted, the less attractive it becomes to buy a stolen bike. Eventually expensive bikes will be not worth the hassle to steal.

used to do some killer road rides in the winter. leave work in northampton about 7pm at get home in west london for about 11pm 70 odd miles. all on little back roads, riding throung little towns and villages you would never see from the motorway.
These days tend to put a 2 hour loop most evenings after work, quiet country backroads are the key. dont ride in the rain, neither you or other road users can see or stop as well in the wet..

made a new alloy steerer for a set of old ebay sids that had been cut down too short..
cut the old steerer out with hacksaw (didnt try to press it out to avoid gauling)
turned up a new one out of some he15 bar to give 2 thou of press fit into the fork crown.
froze new steerer in nitrogen, add a dab of loctite 648 and dropped it in place..
    been riding it ever since..

run a 5mm drill bit through the cable stop, dress the sharp edges with a little file or a dremel, squeeze the slit closed on the stop with a pair of pliers (making sure you can still thread the cable through..)

sounds brutal, but works a treat.

Trawling hard, http://bikeshd.co.uk/ is really handy tool for that

    Posters spread across Redhill.

Angry mob dispactched nightly, harassing hoodies for info.. couple of leads but no fruit..

police reckon it could be a local job, they knew what they were after, and what was in the house, just waited for the house to be empty and broke in.

    eyes peeled everyone..

had 2 GTB legacy turbo’s for the last 5 years (a ’96 and a ’99) straight from japan.. absolutly brilliant cars. subaru parts are cheap on ebay, as there are alot of crash damaged impreza’s around, that get stripped for parts.. bought a whole replacement engine for 500 and fitted myself no probs..
30-35 mpg @70mph on motorway, down to about 10 if you start getting all colin mcrae..
3 bikes plus three guys and gear all in the car no probs
superb in snow, literally drove rings around an x5 that had got stuck last year
oil change every 8-10k, runs ok on 95 ron but alot better top end on 98..
was thinking of getting rid of mine as i have used it 3 times in the last 6 months..
