I believe the police have some opinions that are considered valid.

What’s that then? That they like them because they’re good for “making progress?

happens all the time. I relax, wait, and when it’s safe I go. Doesn’t take long.

So are you the only person with the judgement and discretion to be able to decide when it’s safe? Or can mere mortals gain this kind of incredible perception?

More mid 40’s balding, a little tubby with fantasies of being Ken block

£30,000 would buy you a pretty nice M3 if you want to get up that stuff.

If you can find a bit of road straight enough to overtake 5 cars and a tractor in one go then you probably don’t need 200bhp and 4wd.

You’d be surprised. And the Golf’s got 300bhp. Quite a difference.

    Gachet – Member

Imagine you’re stuck behind five cars, who are stuck behind a tractor on a wet B road doing 20mph

I wouldn’t attempt that sort of overtake no matter how much traction or power my car had, as chances are at least one of the five will pull out on you without warning whilst trying to overtake them!

Purely an example of when you could use the cars power. Not an instructional manual on how to drive.

As if this is all about overtaking capability…loool..

Oh right, sorry I forgot everyone who buys a £30,000 4wd golf is going to drive like Ken Block.

So are there different rules for speed and driving like a twit with 4wd?

Uh, no. But since you’re clearly lacking in imagination and prone to knee jerk reactions I’d better explain. Imagine you’re stuck behind five cars, who are stuck behind a tractor on a wet B road doing 20mph. You anticipate a potential overtaking opportunity, and it appears. Having 4wd means that you’ll be able to put all of that power to the ground in a relatively controlled manner, passing quickly and safely.

Exploiting the same gap in a powerful fwd or rwd car might be more dicey as they break traction more easily.

Accelerating and overtaking are perfectly legal.

with performance that one can’t even begin to exploit without breaking a lot of laws and risking some rather serious repercussions when it all goes wrong.

It’s four wheel drive, so it should be able to put down a lot of that power, a lot of the time. So for overtaking, or just pressing on in most conditions it should be pretty useable.

Having said that, it is pretty small by estate car standards so I don’t really see why anyone would buy it if the needed boot space.

Johnnyboy, by now you’ll see from the other replies why exposure have a reputation for reliability. My own lights have seen nearly six years of continuous abuse.

With all due respect many people have worked in bikeshops and have many anecdotal evidence on stuff. Until you have some sort of actual returns figures from the manufacturer then it’s nothing more than anecdotal.

First hand experience is not anecdotal. It often comes with context and information that people choose to leave out of their angry forum posts or that journalists neglect to mention in magazine reviews.

When you work for a company like crc you are dealing with thousands, even tens of thousands of units, so again, not anecdotal. Nor was my experience at a previous employer who serviced the bikes for the psni bike unit, all of which were kitted out with exposure lights.
Since you commented Lezyne lights were reliable, you really don’t have a leg to stand on here, in terms of knowing what you’re talking about, and in terms of criticizing people for giving anecdotal evidence, which is what you’ve done. Come back to me in 6 years and we’ll see how your cateye is doing.

I would not recommend film camera. It’s a royal faff compared to digital, and it’ll take longer and cost way more to learn the ropes.

Try these – standalone photo printers

What is a printer going to teach her? How to push a button?

    jimjam

If she has an interest in photography I’d recommend a Pentax K1000 and a few rolls of black and white film of various iso ratings. That’s what i learned the fundamentals on 20 years ago and they are great wee cameras.

A polaroid camera will teach her nothing about lighting, exposure, iso ratings, shutter speeds, lenses, f stops, depth of field etc. If she just wants to point and shoot there are plenty of “polaroid” apps and filters for smart phones, then all she’d need is a printer. There are websites out there that’ll print on polaroid style paper too.

I have seen absolutely loads of reports of Exposure lights failing. I think truth be told most brands reliability figures will be very similar.

I sold them for five years and saw very few with my own eyes. About five in total.

Surely things like how bright a light is is pretty important when buying a light, pretty much the whole point of a light is to produce light.

Yes but stated lumen output is only part of the picture, assuming it’s even accurate (which it’s not with anything chinese). It doesn’t take beam pattern into consideration.

In every quantifiable measure the joystick appears very over priced. I just picked up a Cateye volt 1200. Perhaps a tenner more but surely a vastly superior light on every single way?

Is the cateye made from machined aluminum? is it lighter? can you mount it on your helmet? is it stronger? is the mount interchangeable with other cat eye lights? can you run other lights off it like the red eye, white eye etc? can you use it as a head torch or a lantern? did buying the cateye help to keep manufacturing jobs in the uk?

I could say the Cateye is inferior in every way apart from having a slightly higher quoted lumen rating, which may be negligible in real world conditions.

Surely the Joystick is the worst value light of its out put? Bearin mind all options above are good quality and reliable.

Only if you value the quoted lumen output above all other factors, like build quality, reliability, versatility, optics, weight etc.

I can tell you I personally warrantied about fifty Lezyne lights and I know they had batches in the thousands that were faulty. They are absolute tat. Niterider have had their issues too. That’s not to say Exposure are flawless, but compared to most other brands of light they are much better built.

The thing about Guy is that he loves being a truck mechanic – he has said so many times. That’s what he calls himself and that’s what he will always do.

He must have a very understanding boss, or very understanding customers down’t garage. He doesn’t live in the average truck mechanics house anymore. Or have their lifestyle.

Fair play to him though all the same, seems a genuine bloke.

Blinders are only to be seen.

Sorry ignore that, I thought you meant the standard Blinder. I’d go for another joystick if I was you. much better construction than the knog or most other brands of light.

Was she on Sunday Morning live? I think so. I get why she might find the whole thing irksome and patronising, and generally not good for the image of Africa as a whole. But people lying dying in ditches and mass graves probably does a lot more damage to Africa’s image.

If Africa was capable of dealing with it as she suggests then we wouldn’t be having this conversation as African nations would have controlled it. She was proposing people boycott the record. As vomit inducing as it might be to see celebrities back slapping and moral high horsing, it might save some lives. You would like to think.

Why? If you’re splitting you’re using the axe as a wedge and the edge on it doesn’t matter

If we are talking axes not mauls then sharper the better. Sharpen your axe and see if it detracts or improves splitting. Then grind it down to a flat blunt edge. It’ll split better sharp, trust me.

in fact a sharp edge is more likely to get stuck when splitting logs.

No. A felling axe is more likely to get stuck than a splitting axe or maul, because it’s not designed to split and bites into the wood whereas a maul or splitting axe is a very differnt shape designed to split the wood apart.

What grit is the file? Is it in good condition? I use a double sided sharpening stone which I find is perfect so long as I stay on top of things and sharpen regulalry. I’d only really use a file (bastard) if I’d done some heavy work or a bit of damage to the axe. I don’t really bother with fine grit paper unless I’m going to shave with the thing.

The stone gets it sharp enough to cut news paper, so sharp enough.

    sharkbait
For splitting duties blunt is fine

    Sharp is still preferable.

Try and keep the original bevel shape, let that guide the angle of the file.

Yeah, but Brody was a ginger ‘American’

…who she was convinced was an islamic extremist intent on blowing up the CIA. If it helps, maybe you could think of Carrie as a metaphor for US foreign policy…determined to f*** over or kill anyone who gets in her way or to get what she wants. Or she’s just a mad bitch. Whatever works for you.

Are you watching the latest one? Believability??! Carey’s seduction of that kid?
Carey in general. It’s such utter nonsense!

Compared to the Brody storyline with it’s dozens of twists, I find it’s a bit more grounded in some reality. If I recall correctly Carrie originally seduced Brody purely as a means to an end, so her doing it again is at least plausible. It looks like they are trying to draw her as a character willing to do anything to accomplish her goals and then see how far the audience will buy into that. It might not be documentary accurate, but it’s not supposed to be, it’s entertainment.

On a side note, apparently there is/was a real life CIA operative who was the inspiration for both Carrie and Maya from Zero Dark Thirty. I wonder if she used similar recruitment techniques in real life.

Obviously it’s a tv show, so what they chose to show and leave out is based on it’s entertainment factor, but I was surprised they didn’t look at hubs (especially with Hope involved) and how they might contribute to the bike’s speed.

I thought they might have looked at rim and tyre width a bit more too.

You appear to be struggling with fiction and reality.

It’s a reality that people will misapproriate quotes, confuse fiction and reality and misremember. Do you understand that? It’s also a reality that online pedants and keyboard sticklers will try to capitalise on this for virtual brownie points with their middle aged, middle class, middle management peers when commoners do these things.

I’m sure the dead don’t give a shit how we remember them, being dead, but given the choice I’d imagine they’d be glad to be fondly remembered, as opposed to forgotten. Even if it meant suffering the indignity of an incorrectly attributed quote.

Exactly, he acted. It may bear no resemblance to Paul Walkers thoughts.
Even though Edward Norton was a nasty racist in American History X I would imagine he’d be keen for people to understand that was a character.

So when someone’s doing a Marlon Brando impersonation and the start quoting on the Waterfront do you correct them? Do you think he’d be upset that people remember him for his portrayal of Don Corleone, a murderous mafia boss, and all they do is puff their cheeks out and mumble “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse?”

Do you think there are loads of pilots flying around with ‘Maverick’ quotes on their planes

    American ones, yes quite possibly.

There are loads around here with tributes to Paul Walker on there cars mainly they say ” Dude I almost had you ” Paul Walker 1970 whatever – 2013

I can kinda understand them wanting to pay their respects, but Paul Walker didn’t say that line it was his character Brian in Fast and Furious

No, he did say it, whilst portraying the character. That’s what actors do. Act.

This season is turning out far better than season 3, which was one season too many with Brody.

I would agree with that. Typical American hit series – why have a concise, exciting story when we can string it out for an extra year with lots of extraneous filler and melodrama. Call it character development. I think the Brody storyline had gone well beyond the boundaries of believability.

The Subaru is wonderful car … The inside is very budget Japanese
And running costs are frightening …..

Certainly not a frugal choice for an everyday car but as a performance car you can use every day, in all conditions there is nothing that comes close in terms of speed vs price.

I would agree the interior on impreza’s is very basic. If you want subaru performance an some creature comforts later Legacy’s are much more refined and very very quick.

I do love the idea of a Subaru, but i don’t know much about them. Is a cheap Impreza Turbo a good idea, or a disaster waiting to happen?

There’s no straightforward answer. On one hand they are reasonably common, and the second hand market for cars and parts is big. They’ll always sell. Cross compatibility between models and years is good, but not exactly lego as people often describe. Complete engines can be had for £500 for a used uk turbo to maybe 3-5k for a 2.5ltr sti engine good for 400bhp with minimal mods. Most maintenance items are pretty cheap, eg. an oem clutch will be 2-300 quid.

UK turbos are relatively slow, and uninspiring in standard trim, frequently modified and it’s hard to find clean ones. WRX STI gen one are all imports if memory serves and are a very different car mechanically. Much more desirable, quite a bit rarer and you’ll have a better chance of getting an older/sensible/enthusiast owner and these are probably going to worth decent money in a few years.

If I had the luxury of buying a Subaru as a weekend car I’d buy a Legacy RS Turbo. Ultimate sleeper and future classic.

A few things to point out. First off, it’s your first time using it. It gets easier. I sold loads of 1×10 bikes to guys in their 40s and they all hated it first time out, wanted to put a triple on, get expander rings etc. I told them to stick with it and drop a ring size – now all converts.

You are using a bit more strength than you’re used to, so in the same way as going to the gym after a few years absence is painful and difficult, it quickly gets easier.

Try a 32t or 34t chainring. It’ll most likely sort things out for you, don’t worry about spinning out as you’ll be nudging 30mph when you do. If you do a really large amount of riding up very steep, lose muddy or grassy banks then you just might need an expander ring.

I’d been wondering whether helmet lights could increase the risk of head injury, so did a quick search and stumbled on this thread?

What about shoulder mounted lights? I can get a fair amount of rotation into corners by turning my chest more aggressively round them. Chest mounted lights seem like a bad idea and if I’m going to break anything I’d rather it be my collar bone.

Depends on the type of helmet mount. Some will be more dangerous than others. Shoulder mounted, I would imagine you’d need one on each shoulder.

For sheer thrills, you absolutely can’t beat a French hot hatch. Look for a Clio 182 or a Pug 306GTI-6 and you’ll not go far wrong. Though buyer beware as being French, neither was built to last as long as a German car. But my God they’re fun to drive!

Prefer driving this (the wife’s car) to my Octavia VRS

Funny to read through that and some of the posts. Obviously it’s as subjective as bikes, everyone has an opinion. Personally if I was looking for a fun car (assuming its a second car) I’d be looking for something front engined, rear wheel drive with plenty of grunt.

I struggle with the fun factor idea of driving front engined front wheel drive cars quickly on the road. Lift off oversteer, to me at least is a fickle and difficult thing to invoke at will, and a dangerous thing to be at on public roads. A big pokey rwd, and you can have second gear fun on any roundabout or corner in relative safety.

Yeah I get that speed is fun, and they are lively wee cars. But perhaps not as exploitable as people make out in a country where it’s always bloody wet. Obviously 4×4 is the middle ground if you want high speed fun and useable performance.

As for that Audi Rally Car I dare say it’s just someones project, no real Groub B heritage or it’d have another zero after the price tag. A good MK2 escort rally car would cost that. Hardly a banger too at that price.

Jimjam- it ended without resolution didnt it. Which way was he turning? 1/3 it slowed down for about 20mins. Found that trying. Glad I perceivered though. Although fassbenders knob waa out too much the nakidness was required wasnt it?

I think his knob was out once wasn’t it? But it was a fairly long scene. The film is about sex, that’s all the character has in his life, his dick is ruling his life so that’s probably why the director is forcing you to look at it.

    DezB
Of course its not required, but it is the director’s style. So you get semi-porn, with a story.

    Very insightful.

It was a well made, well performed film. Fassbender is a very compelling actor. I can appreciate it, but didn’t really enjoy it. I think the writing was a bit sparse at times. Maybe dialogue was improvised.

I would criticise it by saying it lacked in any kind of satisfaction or reward for the viewer, but then that may have been the intention, since the central characters are similarly lacking.
