I shall pass on your ‘review’ :lol:iain1775Free MemberI still have a full set of keys from my time in telecoms somwhere, Orange, T Mobile, Three, Vodafone, SSE Telecoms, BT Reach cards and keys, various Forestry Commission keys (they used to come in handy when watching rallying!)
I had forgotten about the amount of different keys I used to have to carry around!iain1775Free MemberNever been to Cannock
No offence to Cannock but even the quietest parts of the White Peak are better than driving over an hour to an overcrowded bankholiday weekend Cannock and there is plenty of great stuff closer to Dovedale than Cannock
Ambergate is 45 mins from Dovedale and the riding round there is cheeky but excellent – Black Rocks, Crich, Shining Cliff etc
You may need a local to tell you where to goLadybower is an hour, but probably a fair bit longer if you have to get through Bakewell of a bank holiday weekend (so just do the Bakewell loop instead)
Macclesfield Forest is about 45mins away (will go along quiet minor roads on the whole so not likely to be too much traffic delays en-route)and generally doesn’t seem to get the same amount of bank holiday visitors as other areas of the Peak
5 Dales loop is a nice ride, and plenty of other stuff in that area if you google or Strava heatmap it
The vids above are probably the best of what is ‘legally’ around
iain1775Free Memberlooked into this couple of years ago, found the same furniture direct from the re-seller rather than through Groupon at a similar price, reviews where not good, long delivery periods, missing /damaged deliveries, poor customer service and the frames where steel so prone to rust, there is probably good reason why these shops use Groupon as a conduit to pedal their tat, makes it more difficult to find who you are actually dealing with (disclaimer – I have had some decent things through Groupon in the past, but usually service based rather than product, ie cheap deals on local restaurants)
I ended up spending a little more to get an aluminium framed set and 3 years later, despite being left out over 2 winters it is still as good as new
iain1775Free MemberI’m not convinced Hoy should be considered legit for siarfc? Fine line but surely he is a racing driver who used to ride bikes now? Small miracle if his time ever gets beaten by another ‘star’.
Be interesting to see how he compares to Harris, Sabine or some other pro racers though, hopefully they will have a separate racers wall like they had the F1 one on old TG
iain1775Free MemberI just watched my first 2 mins of this series – hate to say without Clarkson but it seemed a bit lifeless and cringey. Tarbet than just cringey with.
I hope you will excuse me if I ignore any opinion formed on watching just 2 minutes
iain1775Free Memberbought some wheels from these last year, where like new when they arrived, they also do full bikes
http://flatoutcycles.co.uk/iain1775Free Memberas others have said, get a full bike and sell the old one, I have nearly always bought frames and moved parts about, it always starts as a bit of a compromise then as you replace more and more stuff ends up costing more than if I had just bought a complete bike, problem is once you start upgrading is addictive
This is a cracking deal and sounds like just the bike you are looking for, you probably wouldn’t need to change anything (well maybe the rear tyre!) leaving your Boardman as a spare bike or to strip down and sell on (I got a carbon Strive from their factory outlet late last year, arrived in 3 days, beautiful bike and rides really well but I might have been better with the equally capable Spectral)
I’m 5’10” and my medium race geo Strive fits lovely, that bit longer and more roomy than the Commencal Meta it replaced, but still feels nimble yet stable at speed. Don’t think I have ever test riden a bike before buying one, pretty much all my bikes/frames have been mail orderhttps://www.canyon.com/en-gb/factory-outlet/#category=mtb-bikes&id=20122
iain1775Free MemberI don’t really understand what it is?
Loose stones, typically bigger than sand, smaller than rocks
iain1775Free MemberCommencal Meta
Canyon Strive or Spectral
Liteville (maybe not the cheapest)
Giant Reign
YT Capra ALiain1775Free Member3 days from ordering for me
Was a factory outlet bike so last years model and in stock
Bike was immaculate though
Customer service has been limited to online chat to discuss returning the bike due to a cheaper Black Friday price the week after I ordered it, they refunded me the extra £300 savings with no quibblesiain1775Free MemberQuite like the OnOne Monocoque ones tbh (out of stock though)
The on one ones are the same, oversized crown/CSU I returned some before Xmas for the same reason you are returning the CC ones
iain1775Free MemberJust to balance some of the bad experiences on here late last year I got a Strive CF 9.0 Race from the factory outlet, ordered it on a Friday evening, was delivered the following Wednesday, all well and good
The next Friday was Black Friday and they knocked another 20% off the price, I went on live chat and suggested I was going to return my bike bought last week and repurchase at the lower Black Friday price, they just refunded me the difference no questions asked, the money was back in bank account another 3 days later
£4.5k bike for £2.8k, I was very happy, it rides great, is well made, much better quality than the Commencals I had previously and I’ve nothing but good experiences from Canyoniain1775Free MemberIf they just smashed a window and didnt cause major damage, tell the (car) insurance company a stone was flicked up by a passing vehicle and smashed it…
That way it just counts as a windscreen claim and not theft so will have much less (if any) effect on future policy prices, if you report as theft they will probably give you naff all for you bike and then charge you for the privilege in future.
But if he then claims on house insurance for the bike theft that would likely be classed as insurance fraud, and given the circumstances (claiming on house insurance for theft from a car) is quite likely the two companies would talk to each other to ensure there isn’t another claim for the same incident
iain1775Free MemberLooked at this yesterday, Cyclesent or Paisley Freight where similar prices around £35
The insurance to £500 is £22 of that
That was for a box 150x50x25cm weighing 6kgiain1775Free MemberAnyone know if this will work with swift ? https://www.decathlon.co.uk/bluetooth-speed-cadence-sensor-cycle-computer-accessory-id_8348589.html
No it doesn’t, or strava etc only Wahoo fitness
I got one couple of weeks ago for that purpose when it didn’t work I posted a review on their site, they contacted me and offered to refund me and I could keep it
I’ve not taken them up on the offer yet but thought it excellent customer serviceiain1775Free MemberI looked at Netamo but didn’t think it controlled the water which Nest v3 does it is cheaper though so could be an option if I can’t fit the Nest
iain1775Free MemberThe Race ones can be single speeded as well
Wolftooth do a lovely 88bcd chainring
Chainline can cause issues with some chani guides thoughiain1775Free MemberWhere I work it is –
£10 for breakfast (only if you leave home before 6.30am)
£10 for lunch
£20 allowance for evening meal, can include 1 alcoholic drinkHotels are booked by the company through a travel agent, max of approx. £70-75 per night which often even puts Premier Inn’s out of budget so they will book a room only with no breakfast (nonsensical as I then claim breakfast back under above rules anyway so they aren’t actually saving anything)
£20 for an evening meal can prove tricky when you are relying on hotel restaurants with nothing else around (our work is often in quite remote locations)
I once travelled to a meeting leaving the house at 5am (and got back well after 9pm), because of heavy traffic on the way down I ended up pushed for time so didn’t have time to stop for anything to eat until 3pm at which point I had a burger and chips from Gloucester services, a bottle of water with the meal took me to £10.43 and my subsequent claim got refused. I was told I had to get approval for the extra 43p from the group finance director
This was the same day the company (a large multi-national) had issued their second rather large profit warning of the year, I don’t think my 43 pence would have been his top priority and sorting it would definitely have cost more than a few pence!
It really annoyed me as I could easily have booked a hotel and gone down the day before, and even stayed over the night after, which many more senior people in our place would have done so instead of a possible £190 odd of expenses they split hairs over 43p
Until then I was not fussed by claiming everything back, since they pi$$ed me about I now make sure I always get as close to the maximum allowances regardless even if it involves sticking receipts in for bags of crisps etciain1775Free Memberfunkweasel – Member
Who’s your house insurance with?
I have all that, up to £3500 per bike, full accidental damage/ theft (from a locked vehicle/locked with something good)
With Aviva.
It’s never locked up… It’s either inside, in a locked car, or I’m riding it.I’d check with them again funkweasel, when I asked Aviva they said inside a locked car was not covered under any policy they offer, again it was only if secured to a lockable bike rack attached to the car
iain1775Free MemberYou can specify items over the £2k limit with AA, I’m insured with them for a bike worth more than this, underwritten by AXA if I remember rightly.
You can but it doesn’t cover them in a locked car, only locked to an immovable object
They clasify a bike rack on the roof or boot of a car as immovable. But still will not cover it if it is locked to the car, inside the locked car!Pedalcover’s policy excludes “Theft from an unattended motor vehicle unless the personal possessions are concealed from view and the vehicle is locked.” So it sounds like as long as they’re in the boot or under a blanket, you’re OK
Hugh at Pedalcover confirmed this to me yesterday, under a blanket across the back seats is okay
How you prove they where under a blanket if the blanket is also stolen is another matter….iain1775Free MemberThe trouble with reporting it is that the landowner may well just say “It’s hassle I don’t need” and re-fence the area off. I don’t know the exact circumstances, but that trail takes advantage of a fence that either fell down or might have been pulled down. It is ‘cheeky’ by definition for walkers or bikes, so any attention placed on it may well lead to it being put out of bounds.
I am no expert, but in this sense I don’t want the idiot doing this to win by forcing the hand of the landowner to exclude everyone.
How would you feel if someone was seriously injured or even killed and you had known this was going on but hadn’t reported it all because you didnt want to risk restricting access
I know where my priorities would beiain1775Free Member^ they don’t cover in a locked car, only locked to a bike rack outside the car
I phoned B&B up this time last year, as well as NFU, AA and a couple more all confirmed they cannot offer that cover and sounded suprised that my current insurer (Pedalcover) didPedalcover definitely do. I have just had that confirmed (Hugh) when renewing the policy this morning
iain1775Free MemberWe renewed with Pedalcover after clarifying that even though the policy document excudes car cover the underwriters don’t intend to enforce that clause.
Pedalcover most definitely do cover bikes inside locked cars, they just have to be covered up / out of sight
Ive just renewed with them (first time I have ever kept the same insurance company 3 years in a row) and had this confirmed on the phoneMost if not all the others that are often mentioned on here only cover a bike if it is locked to a rack on top or on the back of a car but bizarly not if it is locked inside, this includes the AA, Hiscoxs, NFU and More Than. This is no good to me as I never leave my bike outside the car, it is always inside
iain1775Free MemberGet it reported ASAP
you don’t have to report it as a cyclist, a wire at chest height could do serious damage to a walker, jogger or a child playing in the woodsiain1775Free MemberIain, was that repair work to the radomes following the storm damage in 2015? The windspeeds then were up to 185mph, the highest recorded in the UK!
No we replaced the stay wires on the mast at the top of the hill in the 2nd photo above
Think the Radomes have already been doneiain1775Free MemberAlso if your on Facebook search our ‘Life behind Bars’ group, a lot of the lads on there are local to Derby area
iain1775Free MemberI’m in Chellaston
Happy to meet up and show you round, there isn’t much from the door though without a bit of a ride to get to
Local there is Ticknall although the tracks in robin Woods have recently been destroyed, or ride up towards Belper, The Cevin and Morley Woods. Other than that it’s nice bridleways and stuff, surprisingly rolling terrain though
Further afield and my main haunt is Black Rocks, Ambergate and Crichiain1775Free MemberAnother one for the Amazon kit
Mounts have been faultless for 18 monthsiain1775Free MemberWe did some maintenance on the RAF communications mast on st kilda earlier this year (it tracks the bombs from the test firing range on Benbecula) unfortunately I couldn’t go as it clashed with me volunteering at fort Wiliam World Cup but will definitely be heading out when we go back next year
We had a 3 week window to get the work done and got superb weather every day, finished in 2 weeks, the lads photographs where amazing
A couple of weeks before we where there the weather station apparently recorded wind speeds approaching 170mph!iain1775Free Membernot the toughest but I find the first half of the Inners XC loop a really good climb, pretty long but just the right gradient with little bits of technical interest to keep you going
Its been a while but I do recall the first climb at Cwm Carn just feeling painfulAnd as for fireroad, the fireroad start at Llandegla, its not steep or difficult to get up but boy is it boring and really lets the place down, they really should look at putting something more interesting into that section rather than another BMX track type jumpy section further along
iain1775Free MemberHotel Splendid near the Eiffel tower
Tell them its your wedding anniversary and request a room with a view of the tower ;)
I did this and got upgraded to the entire top floor honeymoon suite, 400 euros a night and I think I paidf about 80 Euros :)
Edit – looks like its changed its name, this is where we stayed – http://comtesse-hotel.com/
Next time we went we stayed near the Place d’Italia, good metro links and easy enough to drive in from the motorway with a cheap pre-bookable parking garage nearby
