    Globalti well said.

Konabunny come on? Globalti is right security often sleep run away or are the ones to steal from you. Decent quality is very rarely around and very very expensive for nigeria its good for gunboats to protect vessel. but you can’t hire that level of security for all people walking around. unmarked cars, unmarked buildings low key is the way to go. I was once told to pout a flag for the visit of the CEO I told them I would personall burn it and take the next flight out. Was always really happy when someone said they could’n find my office or had passed numerous times in front unaware it could be there.

    Jambalaya,

Two years ago I couldn’t find any, you still have service stations that only take french cards. Must say I haven’t examined the small prints recently as I do have a french Card now. But that Bouyges says French Card and Orange refuses my visa or non french maestro cards as well.

So it read the small print or make a friend who can do the recharge for you( as its only one or two the OP will need)

    Jambalaya,

Loddrik will struggle with that sim as you need to recharge that sim with a french bank card. Many french companies online recharge pay thing only takes french cards. Its a common thing it used to annoy me now I have a french card to supplement my collection.

I have about 20 spare road wheels I have 5 euuhm 7 road bikes though. I have tyres all over the place from new, once uced prelovved to ragged to hell dunno at least 20 probably 40 most likely more.

Brake pads 30 sets? more most likely.

I have too its a 30k drive to a bike shop and they are in the sticks so rather expensive. Though we have one good one who actually stocks fat bike tyres and all kinds of hope bling.

One off my housemates thought it was a good idea to match me to her other overseas sporty andcycling friend. She believed I was a riding god and her friend was as per her relaticely good but didn’t do road racing as such as me. I was back then top 5 out of hundreds in the province. Luckily we went for a coffee before and I god to meet this British Tim she swam a bit with. I figured out quite quickly it was Tim Don, we just had coffee I had a lucky escape from a nice ride in the mountains for my 15 stone sprinter frame.

Went for a ride with one of my female classmates as well I hung on but died many deads, I have long gotten slow whe smoke all the men in The freedom Challenge a mountainbike race across south africa and is only a couple of hours of the 11 day something course record.

I’ve waited a lot as well it happens you can always wait at the dop or ride the climb again. I currently do this in my current road club the tell me to go flat out, I come back down half the mountain and ride from rider to rider having a chat with most of them and taking some pics. Or on the mountainbike on purpose take the hard lines for yourself only big blade there is many stuff to even out.

He’s crazy picking up and dropping the camera. For the rest nothing special http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb_an2LpY3A . There is some lithuanian guy aswell. Have myself snuck up to a truck and then overtaken it at 110+ (k/h) have been passed doing 95 by a buddy behind a milk truck in South Africa doing 115-120 as well getting pack from a pee break. You are young you don’t think stuff happens.

I do believe he is most likely guilty on the other hand in an African context especially south African context his explanations don’t seem that daft.

I have lived in several african countries and on two occasions in South Africa and have visited at least many times when not living there.

I had someone coming in through the tiny bathroom window(all the others where protected by metal bars) and ended up with a knife against my troat.

I have had armed guards in front of the house, seen people with sticks and knives under their pillows, used to have a panga under my desk in the office. Have stayed behind 15 feed electric fences.

I cycled with peper spray tied to my handlebars and trained on grabbing it quickly, many friend ride with it and or knives some with guns.

Withe South africans are scared to a certain degree rigtly, guns are all around and not seen as strange. As a result on many attacks and often a stap or shoot first policy from robbers people don’t wait it can cost your live. Many have already lost their lives meaning quite some are scared senseless living on the edge and pronen to nervous over reactions. Family members have been shot before been mistaken by intruders.

You learn to live with the constant fear, you try and learn to ignore I know hear them again but I would just sleep through gunshots as it was just a daily thing and rather normal and most likely 500m or one 1-2k away so wouldn’t get to me. Its a beautifull place Africa and in specific South Africa but some parts of it are so bedly messed up.

I have blown a rim on an uphill just before cresting the summit I wouldn’t wan’t to have seen the damage to myself if it happened a mile down the road. I have blown a front tire from overheating by braking on a steep downhill. Tire and shredded tube came off some good relexes made me stop with without personal hurt again i wouldn’t want to see my face if I reacted slower/had a bit less luck.

Dental work on one tooth is more expensive then a decent new wheel.

    Common misunderstandings:

    Terrain:

They are great for mud: no they aren’t you will plane on it and its actually their worst terrain IMO

They are for snow: only packed snow that is fresh stuff gets impassable soon but its still fun.

    Speed:

They are slow: not they aren’t

They suck on road: no they don’t ok they are slower then a 29 with 1.75 inch semi slicks but not by very much say 10-15% uless you put massive knobbly’s on(ie nates or floaters but the the 29’er with downhill tires is a slug too.

Get your self a front suspension fork it takes the fatbike to another level on the rough stuff.

They are great for passing people downhill as you can ride many lines and the tires make a lot of noise(I have lots of people pull over thinking there is a motorbike sneaking up on they lolz)

    I’d love to have them.

You ar right about uncirculated to have some value. Though only some uncirculated have value and it really means uncirculated not touched.

Most likely will not have much value though can be loads of fun looking at history and the craftsmanship that has gone into the design of the older stuff.

In general only the gold and silver is worth its value i gold and silver. random non rare stuff coins go for a tenner or twenty a kg and notes for 50p or a quid if its somewhat decent. For notes only higher denominations of old stuff genrally attract some value but I guess you won’t have many of those if any.

Utterly disgracefull I order on sunday and already get my stuff today the other side of the channel in the middle of nowhere though. Just a pity my main item seems to have dropped 10£ in price in those mere days same when I ordered during sales about 4-5 days from order to the sticks. I take longer driving to a properly stocked shop from my place.

Jeases Oldgit not sure how accurate that site is but that’s 21K meters of climbing almost 70K feet which is a lot more then you stated this is gonna reuire a rare breed to do in 30 hours and already a special breed to do in 36 hours riding time, check your legs and altitudes carefully there is some nasty stuff around there.

    hofnar
    Free Member

Ok Oldgit so I rewoked it on 36 hours riding time thats 12 hours say in a 15 hour day that gives you three hours for lunch and shorter stops and a 9 hour sleep fot two days and a 12 hour pull the last day.

Say you do 26k/h a big 16 miles for rolling stuff and descent around 40k/h then you would need to be climbing the stuff at 1730 feet a big 500 meters an hour just to give you an idea for three 12 hour days.

If you want to do 10 hour days same speed assumptions downhill and flats you will need to climb at 2250 feet an hour or close to 700 meters an hour which is already quite a respectable climbing speed for mere mortals.

as per higher 20 average is already quite a respecatable speed(second example

    hofnar
    Free Member

Hard to say what your average speed will be, 9-12ks up the steep climbs through to 60ks + down the long descents off the back of them so that would equate to 28-30ks ave, but you will not achieve that, even I would die a death on a couple of multiple ramps up..

This maths is far off if you climb 10 K/h and descent 60k/h your average will be around 17 k/h. To note also that 60 average on the downhills is not give to many a slow corner some traffic really bites into your average.

I would work on your sustainable climbing speed in meters/feet per hour. You don’t need to know the gradients just the altitude differences divide by climbing speed(VAM) and you have your hours of climbing take your speed for the flats 20? and take more or les 1.5 times your speed for the flats as average for downhills you just need altitude gain and a rough mileage for flats and downhills.

For climbing speed test yourself on a climb at least half an hour long preferably an hour your best effort for example 1000 meters an hour(this is quite good) you use as a base and then take 70% or so of that for your calculations as that is what will be realistic to sustain over multiple climbs multiple days.

45000 feet is lets say 15.000 meters if you are a 1.000 meter guy taken at 750 you will be climbing for 20 hours.

A rough calculation for your 58 hours basic assumption 250k climbing 250k down and 100k flat/rolling hills etc.

Say you ride 16 K hour on the flats(just over 6 hours) that 10 miles an hour descent at 15 miles an hour(ten and a half hours descending) then you need to climb 45 K feet in the remaining 41 hours thats about 1100 feet an hour roughly 335 meters an hour(which is not that much) though this is meaning you are riding al 58 hours its all the tinkering and stopping eating etc that consumes a lot of time. Faster or doing more distance is more a bout less stopping then going fast in long distance rides like this one

Lower your bike down a 25 ft cliff cos you don’t wan’t too back track 15 miles, climb the dam and climb a 8 feet fence with bike and pack on the other side.

Get lost and the resort to follow the stream to civilisation.

Those things happen if you do a two week tour across a country with only a car road map and a mate who sort off speaks the language.

For the guy with tie a knot in the tube(it does work) done 200+ miles on one on the road bike before i punctured it again in another spot.

I would go for the rolling frame or just the frame sadly wasn’t an option when i bought mine.

I added these TRUVATIV Pédalier HUSSEFELT 3.1 44/32/22 – 175m paid about 50 quid fit on the standard BB chucked on an E type you can fine for 20 quid. I beefed up the brakes and added a suspension fork(temopararely removed for an overhaul); Granny works a treat and is definitely needed to haul me up the GR’s here in France

I do geographical spredding to reduce the shame; I mainly hoard bike rooms, bikes, wheels and tires/tubulars.

I have a bike room in my own house I have one in my parents house(different country) I have one in my work appartment(different continent) and have a bike at a mates place again on a different continent. I have at least ten bikes I have I guess 20 odd spare wheels from never ridden to knackered to bits. Spare tyres /tubbies I guess 50 odd from brand new to shredded to bits.

Its lovely there to pedal inland most climbs not too steep notre dame des anges quite a bit harder. Good mountainbiking around as well. Becomes rubbish road riding when the tourists swap the place and clog uf traffic and ride you of the road my 5 cents

I have been To Johannesburg and neigbouring Pretoria. Have travelled to South Africa about 20 times studied around Cape Town in 2003 2004 and Worked in Durban in 2010 2011. Have many friends there love the country love the livestyle. Would hesitate to move there(country) with kids, would not wan’t to live in Joburg with wife and kids. Joburg is dangerous its the rape capital of the world as said get used to hig fences barbed wire, bars in front of windows, caarying pepper spray on rides. Have woken up with a knife against my throat and been attacked on my bike several times in the safer western cape.

Though its a lovely holiday destination, the have an active ride scene and beautiful overwelming scenery in many places. Must book a ticket for another visit still have a spare bike somewhere down there. http://www.thehubsa.co.za for cycling info road is keen MTB wonderfull. Though inform yourself where you ride some are’s are no go others only in a group. I have been asked to hang back and wait for some ladies in a race as they ran out of armed escorts for part of a mtb route.

To put it in perspective I have been the most scared in my life in Johannesburg. I currently live in Rio De Janeiro and cycle along the edges of the Favel’as I have worked in one of the most dodgy streets in durban, Lived in Mozambique lived and worked in Helhole Luanda Angola, worked in Angolan bush but only in Johannesburg I am afraid of my own shadow. So No I wouldn’t especially if you are used to Switserland. Especially as the country is becoming more unstable with farm and mining strikes(some of my mates had part of their farm burnt down and flew the family out with the chopper that brought the mercenaries in). Also Mandela’s health is faltering its a big worry as his death is expected to be the spark to ignite quite a bit more violence.

There is always a risk though in New Zealand its albeit quite low.(dislaimer my reference might be off lived in Belgium, France Uk and other utter safe places like Mozambique, Brazil, south Africa and Angola in the last few years)

South island is the best, north is quite good though get the latest version of the kennett brothers book(ground effect used to ship it internationally)

Car or Camper van quite some of the good ride spots are a long way from train bus or other tokens of civilization. Did a 6-7 week mostly MTB trip around there couple of years ago. One off the better periods of my life. though can’t beat being a semi drunk student pretending to have pro potential on the African racing scene though
