@ Junkyard & londonerinoz – thanks guys – it does just go to show that different people have different views. I guess I just have to be more upfront about asking in future.

As I mentioned in my original question, I don’t think that the guy involved was ‘wrong’, it was just that I was unaware and so felt a bit caught out when I discovered there were others so far down the line. Have learnt my lesson :-)

    I got a date

On Sunday, with a girl and she’s not mental. Result. Not bad for 2 weeks effort.

Where do I look next ? Match, PoF ?

    Opinions please.

    Loving the optimism!

Hmmm… not sure that I am mental or desperate enough to put my email up on here

@ dashed – I’ve also tried Fitness Singles, but don’t get much from that at all.

Maybe I need help with my profile – come on guys what appeals to 40 something, chilled out, male mtbers / kayakers / snowboarders (plaese don’t get this thread locked  )

adjustable – if you go onto POF just hang in tight and duck while the barrage of random 68 year old men send you pictures of themselves drinking champagne in bed – it does get better once all it all calms down :)

Ask them about it – whether “exclusive” to start or not

Yes – I guess that this is the obvious answer, but I would fully accept guys chatting to a few girls at a time – it seems to be the way it works – it was the one month later revelation that was a bit weird.

I don’t care but you need to decide what you think is acceptable

Very true – the problem is that you aren’t always aware of how others are acting – guess that comes back to hammy above.

I cannot imagine planning a trip away with someone whilst still trying out others

This is the bit that pissed me off, I wasn’t aware at the time.

However – the update was that the girl he originally ‘choose’ turned him down when she also found out that he was still ‘shopping’. I was even offered the position as runner up – classy!

Don’t give up the hunt..it’s hard work but it can pay off!

    Cheers!! :D

It depends what you are looking for, but there is a very active ‘meetup’ group for Edinburgh Mountain Bikers. It would seem to be mainly weekend trips to GT, and generally socially paced – but it has over 200mtb members, so could be a good place to meet people?

(I have not been out with them)

EDIT – just a quick thanks to Graham for the SBC recommendation – it was a great club when I moved to the area 8 years ago, and very friendly, but is sadly very depleted these days on the mtb side. :(

I have a question – How long is it acceptable to be ‘meeting’ a few different people with out ‘declaring’ it? How many ‘meets’ before you admit to the fact that you are still chatting to others?

I ask this as I feel that I got a bit caught out. I had met a guy about 4 times, with loads of chatting between and was talking about a trip away with him (and I guess I was beginning to feel like there might be something in it), when he admitted that he had been seeing two other girls for a similar length of time. The outcome was that he chose one of the other girls.

I don’t think he did anything wrong, I had also met another guy during that time, but it has made me think… I am presently meeting another guy for the second time, while still chatting to two more. What is the etiquette here? Help?

I don’t really understand why it would be too niche to sell, but in such demand to rent??

If parents are so keen to move to the area for the school, then I would have imagined this would affect the sales market as well as the rental market…

Aside from that I rent out a house, initially used an agent to find the tenant and get references. First tenant was a pain, had to chase her for rent on two occasions, she didn’t ventilate the bathroom, causing a mould problem and left the house in a bit of a state. Now on my second tenant (the mother of the next door neighbours) and all is going well. However it doesn’t take much to wipe out your months rental income. Last month with the gales, I had to repair my own roof, and the rental properties roof… you need to consider this if you are relying on the rental income to pay your own mortgage.

Try googling ‘Billbergia Nutans’ and look at the images.

    Is a form of bromiliad.

Then please let Surrounedbyhills know if he’s at risk of losing his tits 8)

Just one point (if you did go rescue…) I didn’t choose the dog, I didn’t even go and see what was available. I emailed the centre and told them what I was looking for, the ages of the children at the house, details of the existing dog, the fact I had a cat, pictures of the garden, the activities I wanted to do etc. They called me within a couple of weeks to say they had a good match. It was only then that I went to see her :-)

    Rescue.

I have a pure bred Kelpie which I got as a pup and a rescue Kelpie x which came from the SSPCA at 9 months.

The rescue dog is by far the gentler and the one that I would trust the most with kids. Having a dog from a pup is no guarantee that it will have a gentle nature.

Are the straps the same as snowboard binding straps? If so you can certainly get replacement binding straps, not sure how you would attached it though…

Sorry, not much use! Happy New Year.

Agghh… that is such a tough one, I dread being in that position. if I could see the dog, then yes I suspect I would. But equally as an ex white water kayaker who has lost a friend, and seen too many near misses, with pinning on tree trunks it would be a hard call.

Really happy it worked for you. Guess everyone has to make their own call with this.

I find most people who have spent more than 39 years in Glasgow tend to suffer from memory loss, post everything twice and drive like my Grandad on a Sunday

EDIT – @ Newcroft – Happy birthday for sometime last week :-)

Wow newcroft – only ever made two posts – both on this thread – the latest one resurrecting it from a week ago. Is this some kind of Fife anti spam? You don’t work for the tourist board do you, repelling ‘furriners’ at the border?

Same here – two Morso stoves (although different models). Same height of flue and chimney, opposite ends of the house. One lights well and draws like a train, the other just puffs smoke back out into the room for the first 15 mins.

Like the newspaper idea – will try that – thanks.

@dashed – I agree – my Christmases alone have definitely NOT been my worst!

I used to spend it alone. I worked with livestock and they needed someone to feed / muck out in the morning. At the time I wasn’t with anyone and my parents were 300 miles away, so would spend that day working / on my own.

Never bothered me at all. I used to worry about it a bit in the run up, especially when other folk talked about their plans, I wondered if I was ‘missing out’ on something. In practice I always had a good day, would plan to do something I wanted to do (usually a walk / ride / bandit river run) and have a nice bottle of wine and yummy food waiting.

This year I will be on my own until early afternoon when my folks arrive – I recon that is the best of both worlds, I get some ‘me’ time and then spend some time cooking with my mum :-)

    @ dantsw13

I ride with two dogs, one is up front, the other on my back wheel. I have bells on them both, so that I know without looking if one has stopped or deviated from the trail.

However – they just don’t do it! Not when you are going at a pace, they are totally focussed and either ‘working’ or running with their pack (however you see it), but they wouldn’t risk stopping and being left behind. When you stop, or if you are pootling along – then yes they will, but at that point it is similar to if you are walking and they drop back, you look to check on them.

FWIW – I rarely pick up, but just employ a stick flick into the under growth.

    1. 2 x 2/3yr old Kelpies
    2. Still building up, most so far 30k, but adding in extra stops at the mo (not that they stay still when I stop!)
    3. Never. They normally get 2 meals a day split 50/50. On a riding day they get less in the morning and more in the evening (so 30/70). Try to get up early to feed them so they have a couple of hours before running.
    4. N/A – but regular water breaks. Mostly streams, but carry a collapsible bowl and only have pure water in my camelback, so always have a back up.

My main concern is what i would do if one got injured when I am in a remote area. I think I should have some idea of how to make a bike ‘sling’ from what I am wearing. Anyone had to do that ever?

Oh, also be very aware of cattle grids!

I had something similar. An item wasn’t as described – the seller was great and agreed an instant refund and return. She also offered to pay my return postage.

I got the item refund straight away, but she contacted me to say that she couldn’t send the postage refund as the dispute had locked her account. I was away at the time, and before I had time to reply or close the dispute I got another email from her saying ‘she had sorted it out’ and the postage refund came through as well.

So – not much help – but yes it does appear that a dispute makes refunding postage difficult, it sounds as though your seller is genuine – but there is obviously a way around it somehow.

@ mattrgee – basically yes! They are all cut and shipped to the garden centre in one batch. Then ‘back up’ stock is cut and left in the yard to see if anyone needs any extra (or at least the grower we buy from works like that). The best way is to go and choose a tree early – cut 1″ off the bottom and stick it in a bucket of water outside until you bring it inside. Then use a stand that can take water in the house (try and keep it away from a radiator). The trees that you buy closer to Christmas have probably been stacked on a pallet and left dry for the past 4 weeks and won’t last as well..

Alternatively buy a Nordman (costs more, doesn’t smell of Christmas, but won’t drop its needles)

(I sell over 10,000 of the darn things!)

I have a 3 bed house on LPG – but it is old (1850’s), solid walls (not insulated), bedrooms in eaves (minimal loft insulation), mostly double glazed – but still can feel draughty. I am in a rural part of central Scotland (maybe colder than where you are). I also have a combi boiler.

I pay £154 per month, but did pay £215 when there were others (and kids) in the house. I also have a couple of wood burners – but admit that I have the heating timed for 90 mins in the morning and 4 hours at night (the wood burners just supplement the evening heat, and keep me going during the day at weekends). The rest of the time it is on a base of 6c.

I am presently on a fixed tarif, you can shop around and get deals – but it isn’t as easy as it should be. If you change supplier the new supplier has to take on responsibility for the tank and pipes, this is fine in theory, but causes problems if the tank is old / badly placed etc.

I love the place that I live, and to live here LPG is the only option. If mains ever came out from the village I would of course grab it, but you just have to weigh up the benefits.

I looked into one near me (central Scotland), but didn’t actually use them.

The set up there was that you dropped the dog off and picked them up yourself. They had an old indoor (riding) school, with kennels along each side and a couple of acres of high fenced land that was split into two.

They were generally allowed to run as a pack for a couple of hours morning and afternoon, but this could be split into two groups depending on the dogs. The kennels were used at lunch time to kennel the regular dogs while they lead walked / trained others.

Cost was £10 per day if you just wanted them to run in the fields and be kennelled over lunch, an extra £10 if you specified one on one time with the handler (lead walks or training). Seemed like a good deal, but we ended up getting a second dog and crating a big out door run at home.

For example, your ‘compensation money’ could be set aside to pay for your car insurance premiums over the next few years.

Just ends up getting recycled back to the insurance companies

Not sure quite what sort of ‘moral compass’ would buy that :? if the OP didn’t really have an injury…

Bit like saying its ok to take money from the till in Tesco as long as you use it to buy your shopping there the next week…

Hmmm – maybe Tesco was a bad illustration

I think Cougar may have the answer. Cheers!

ArcticBeast – have just tried swapping the wire – no result :(

Cougar – now you mention it the box I removed did have a fixed top, I hadn’t realised the significance of it. The replacement was called a master (from B&Q) but it doesn’t have the fixed top, so I assume it isn’t what I need. I will try the box in your second link.

I understand that legally I have messed with BT property, but if I can fix it with out paying £150 then I will give it a go

Sparkyrhino (I much prefer to think of you as a sparkly rhino) I will check the lozenge wiring as well, but I suspect it is the wrong box.

    Thanks everyone :)

Winston_dog I have tried both (as i wasn’t sure which was needed). Presently have the master connected as this at least gives me an incoming ring (which the secondary one didn’t)
