doncorleoni – good shout – will try that in the meantime – thanks

kahunajb – cheers for the info – I’m in Edinburgh but thanks anyway!

djflexure – Interesting about the Transition – that had slipped under my radar – cheers

Yep – had the Cotics in my sights initially, just keen to see if there’s anything I’ve not considered.

Candodavid – oh my! I would love a Curtis – I really would. But I don’t think my budget stretches that far. Or maybe it would… NO NO! Aargh! ;)

Oh and I’m kinda going towards 26 but possibly 27.5. Not 29 I don’t think.

Thanks for the replies so far folks – interesting that lots of you tall guys are on Slacklines…

I’m 6’2″ but on a 19″ PA with one of the longest seatposts I can find at full extension – most concerned about managing to get the seat high enough. I’m kinda all leg (without that sounding weird!) – long legs and short torso.

    Keep ’em coming!

    Haha, thanks dude! You’re right – I didn’t specify…

Would be happy to stick to 26 as all the running gear on the PA is good but I could be tempted by a 27.5…

Incredible story. Met Jamie whilst working on the TransProvence team – what a thoroughly nice, approachable chap he was too. Respect.

I got one of these as a hire car once.

Don’t EVER take it out in the snow. It’s dreadful (2WD one). Spent most of the journey from Elgin to Edinburgh trying not to fudge my duds.

    Fuel economy is woeful.

    Rear visibility is really bad.

Also, got a flat and the jack supplied with the car actually bent under the weight of the car (I watched it bend over about 30 seconds then collapse). This was at 5am in -14 degrees – I was not amused. Get a decent jack in the boot. Oh and the spare isn’t full size and I don’t think you can actually fit a full-size one in the space either.

I know yer missus is set on it but hopefully this is somewhat useful…

+1 for Bicycle Works. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

RAD program is for racers – sponsored athletes. Racing Applications Development program. As euans2 points out, this shouldn’t be in the general public space at all. Avoid.

Mate had this happen on his 44RC3Ti. Windwave fixed them for nowt. Give them a shout!

I noticed that certainly in terms of seat-tube length, an XL 301 is more similar to an L from most other manufacturers. Almost identical to the Nicolai Helius AC I had previously.

I’m also about 6’2″ with long legs and on a L 301, there’s no way the seat tube would be long enough.

Also, running mine in 160mm mode with 26″ wheels.

Good call. Was thinking that myself as I’ll have to order some more shrink-wrap stuff and that’s take a few days. Will probably try without. Ta!

Chaps – extremely useful thread – thanks for this.

All good for me except replacing the shrink-wrap – how did you guys wrap the spring? Had lots of problems with it crinkling up too much and unwrapping for me – will try again once I get some more and will try a lower, steadier application of heat.

LoCo – I didn’t realise that these had changed – are the service intervals on 36s longer than previous or have the RS ones decreased?

euans2 – ok, fair point – a light-hearted comment there really – not that Graves would see it that way though!

In the last 5+ years of riding, my experience of Rockshox vs. Fox has seen Fox fall to pieces much sooner and require more maintenance to keep them feeling good.

My own personal opinion, I know, but I reckon the biggest thing Fox could do to improve at the moment is to increase reliability. They also took a beating in the last year or two by pretty much everyone (customers, mag reviews) over the CTD disaster as well.

Given the price difference, they don’t appear to offer anything more over the Pike expect possibly a very slight performance difference. As mentioned above – will this be detectable my most riders?

And yes, if you wanna buy them, sure, go ahead – they will probably feel lovely.

A lot more money for a fork that you’ll spend more time servicing than riding? No thanks – Fox need to get their act together with reliability before I’ll ever consider them over Pikes.

Maybe ask Jared Graves what he thinks of them after his set ‘mysteriously’ lost most of their air on a recent EWS event losing him a ton of time…

    Yup. 44 RC3Ti. Incredible fork.

Jesus wept. That is bloody awful. Glad you got the Landy back – as above, hope they get the wee bastids.

Will keep an eye out in Edinburgh.

As above! Slightly heavier but absolutely solid performance, plush, well damped, reliable – I haven’t touched mine for 2 years – love ’em. Do it!

3 years plus on an E-13 XCX here, has taken a beating and is still perfect.

Have seen lots of Superstar ones snapping and falling apart.

Some newer Shimano ones have the blanking plates on the back of the shifter window that gets removed – check! I got fooled by this…

Raced it twice, then worked guiding the tour weeks and do the signing each year.

I’ve been fine with LUSTs. LUST are somewhere between single and double-ply. You’ll probably be ok with a HRII as you stated on the front but I’d definitely get a LUST or a dual-ply on the back.

    I’ve run:

    – LUST 2.35 High Rollers front and rear
    – LUST 2.25 Ardent front, LUST 2.25 Crossmark rear (Clementz ran this when he won it, even when sponsored by Conti – black pen over the MAXXIS logos! Says it all really…)
    – This year, probably will run a 2.3 HRII front, 2.25 Ardent LUST rear.

Maxxis are great tyres, I wouldn’t use anything else.

    Have fun!

I’m sure there are plenty of things you can do that are similar or can recreate the TransWales experience of riding in a monsoon, wrecking your bike, staying on pure mud ‘campsites’, having cold showers every day, costing a fortune and then getting a campylobactor infection that lasts for a month as you sh** your brains out.

Can’t think of one offhand though…

Seriously though, it seems that events like this struggle to get numbers as the shorter Enduro-type events get more popular. Shame. As above, the dry year was good and TransScotland was ace. Yes, I did 2 Wales’ and the Scotland.

No bother! Trails are riding well, not wet/splashy at all.

Shook myself to pieces on the HT but totally worth it :)

Was there yesterday, rode all the runs:

    Black: totally open

    Upper Red: totally open

Lower Red: first bit open, just lower section where it crosses the lower fire road is an issue. When you get to the fire road, just go straight across it and into the trees to rejoin the trail instead of turning right up the fire road.

DH/Freeride run thing: apparently shut but no tape and I rode it. Couldn’t see any points where it was/should be shut. Think it’s cos they’re using the lower fire road it crosses to get machinery into the forest.

Loos and showers open. Bike wash/hose not working though…

    Enjoy!

Had mine for a while now (26″ wheels):

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/liteville-301-ride-review-after-a-week-on-the-transprovence-signposting-team

Been running 2.35 Maxxis High-Rollers, Minions, Crossmarks and Ardents on it – loads of tyre clearance on the rear – no issues with clogging.

Sounds like the rebound circuit is buggered – this would cause the top-out. Or they’re missing oil through a leak?

Mine do this if I’ve had the bike upside down at all – this causes the oil to drain out the damper. Righting the bike and bouncing the fork a few times gets it back to normal though.

Windwave are usually pretty good at sorting out warranty issues – give them a shout!
