I think he took the meaning of nose manual a bit too literally!

Having watched someone do something similar who broke their back, and the fact your mate missed the rocks with his face I would say he has been lucky to come away with minimal injuries. Would also be worried about riding with someone who cared more about the filming?

try this thread for specialized frames going cheap:
    Specialized frame sale

You will probably need a longer fork through for the pitch / enduro, CRC were doing some great deals last month on 2010 and 2011 Marzochhis. Then swap everything else over.

This will have to be added to the hitlist once I’m back on the bike. New forks and wheel in the 9 weeks off the bike so far. Will be good to have the full range of trails open again to link up all of mabie. Does anyone know if the waterloo monument was affected by the criffel fire this week?

Ah, knew I shouldn’t have clicked on this topic. I’m now considering buying one of those Myka’s for the girlfriend (cos I’m such a nice chap and she has been hinting she wants some shiny new bits). Someone tell me to stop!…

I just went out to weigh my wolf ridge. Built up at the moment it was around 32lbs and that’s after I have recently replaced with some lighter forks and front wheel. I was actually surprised as I thought it would be more than that. I have a short travel steel hardtail running some old SIDS (the ridiculously light, flexy ones) and even that only came in at 28lbs.

I think it could be built up under 30lbs- I’m carrying a marz rc3 ti fork at around 2kgs and a rear pro2 on a 729 rim. Options on those 2 alone could save you another 0.5kg I would have thought. Then I have a fairly chunky seatpost and heavy saddle after finally breaking my bel air. Also have a middle of the range handlebar / stem combination and mixed XT/SLX drivetrain. Running a triple instead of a double would also shave some weight.

If I had the money then I could get it under 30lbs, but it rides really well for its weight (up and down) and I don’t break many bits which I would undoubtedly do if I converted to carbon or lighter XC parts. I’m usually fairly fit (current condition excepted) so not too concerned with spending lots to save a little.

Found this old link which helps:

and someone reviewing it had weighed the frame at 3.7kgs.

I think we may have strayed a little off the original topic, but I think it goes to show that it was a brilliant year for the Wolf Ridge! 😀

I would echo muddydwarfs comments regarding weight. In terms of shock setup I don’t flick the propedal lever very often but nice to know I can.

In terms of pedal bob I feel there is less on the wolf ridge than the old attack trail, but I really only had feedback in the granny ring. Standing to never helped but the wolf ridge feels a little more solid. Forgot to mention the dropouts are replaceable on both sides, I’m undecided whether that is a good thing or a marketing ploy.

I quite like the look of marins and whytes, and I don’t have a beard. Replacement bearings under warranty is very good having seen some other mainstream bikes go through bearings much quicker and at owner’s cost. Definitely worth considering if you have the option.

Don’t know if this will help, but it might.
I recently changed from a 2004 attack trail to a 2008 wolf ridge. The main differences in spec are:
Improved rear shock adjustability (float rl to rp23)
    12mm rear maxle
    Lower bottom bracket
    Shorter rear swing arm

The ride is a lot more stable and gives a more inclusive ride. By that I mean the old bike felt very high and perched on it. The shock allows me to play around with some more settings and the rear maxle gives a much stiffer. While I prefer the older quad link for cleaning purposes, the new design is a much better ride. I don’t know if the new rift zone has the same design, but if it is then you will notice the difference over the older version. Can’t comment on reliability of more recent frames, but so far I’ve not had any problems with either marin frames.

Nice one, looks a bit further out than last time. Is that the track in the distance you can see from wee queensberry?

That’s nothin Simon, the pros do it backwards on carbon handlebars for added gnar-danger value.

Looks better than my view today, annoyed that the sun comes out when I’m stuck in an office. Little bit of snow up on the higher hills, Criffel and the Lakes seem to have a good covering.

So we are all in agreement, ligaments are rubbish…and they take a long time to heal. Quite a few stories of surgery up there, was that a decision by you or a recommendation by doctor? I have been told to work with the physio as MCL could repair itself. A decision for surgery would be another 4 weeks down the NHS timeline which starts eating into my plans for skye in may and other summer trips. I’m the only member of the immediate family without private health care.

Cheers bigG. I have had to accept it is a slow recovery, made me realise I am easily broken despite what I think! But I’m impatient, I want it fixed now! Have a good ride, really missing it at the moment as the weekends are my only chance to regain sanity doing stuff to balance out the rest of the week.

I saw someone adapt an old sram cassette spider by removing all the old cogs and then spacing a single cog onto it. Don’t know which cog they were using or whether it was a ss cog, suspect it night just have been a cog off the cassette. Looked good and certainly wouldn’t dig in! Or you could buy a steel freehub body, think they are about £50 though

it’s at the bottom of the firebreak if you don’t turn off for the afternoon trail, think the exit is further round than pipeline. slippier than it looks in the wet. 😀

Why would you ever choose to go to Southerness? Just search out one of Treksters b&b threads in his history and save the man cutting and pasting the same information again!

If you are looking for luxury cottage, there’s a place called kinnelhook in the dumfries area, I don’t know how much it is but Steve is a good guy (and mtber) if you can understand his yorkshire accent!

Advice would be stay away from southerness, you could head out to the galloway hills for nicer scenery and less cheap blackpool feel

There was a fence across the first bridge before you even start the first climb with the diversion taking you up the other side of the river. Said it would hopefully be finished by april. It probably takes you up to the next bridge and then rejoins the red. Depending on where the forestry operations are that could mean that all of rabs slippy one and top part of granny green luv could be cut out. If the face climb is closed then all the middle section including the edge will be closed.

I dont know, anybody been recently? It might be busier with locals tomorrow as its the last day before closing and mary is maybe making carrot cake…

I dont know if the tracks are affected, but you could ride round the road (to picnic area) and jump onto the blue or one of the walking trails. People were walking that side last week.

Both. Playing football took a hit from the side with all my weight on it and then crumbled to the floor. I cant bend the knee enough to go out on a bike, walking along the flat is my limit. Physio starts next week, but would have been useful to know what is wrong to get the right exercises and prevent more damage. The last guy tried bending the knee with me on laughing gas, and I started screaming! They are talking about the MCL ligament, but it’s the bone that feels painful.

Bought a load of bike bits to help the pain, new forks and shifters, tools and riding top. Next up is a wheel.

Fortunately my brother is able to return the favour for all the lifts I have given him to work, but im stuck in the office every day until I’m fit to drive to sites, etc…

Have you been doing physio, and what did you do?

Sounds like a good excuse. Me, I’ve messed up my knee. 4 weeks on I am still struggling with stairs, can’t drive and awaiting results from an MRI scan. I hadn’t ridden for a few weeks before buggering up my knee, next weekend will be 2 months off the bike. My sanity is suffering.

There was a big diversion at ae last weekend, I don’t know how much of the red route was cut off as I was only out walking. Last weekend the shop and cafe is open under current owners, don’t know what is happening after that.

I can’t offer you a spare maxle, but shops in the area worth trying are at ae, g&g in dumfries and the shed at mabie, bit honestly I dont think any of them will be able to let you borrow one (I’m not sure any of them will even have stock).

    good luck!

Cheer for the info yoshimi, bought some forks at a great price at the weekend, but might try and get some of the difference back for even better bargain! I might need a new wheel aswell…

I’ve already received my 44s after buying them at the weekend. 1 1/8 steerer. Was looking around and for the same price as a sektor I got these. Just need to find anew front wheel as the bulb doesnt have a 15mm conversion.

Bargain price, can’t be much if any profit at that price

Hopefully someone will be able to come in and use the shop/ cafe. It’s a shame as ae has not been getting the bad press of previous years and it is a good centre. Hope they don’t move too far!

Looking forward to seeing the full business up and running.

Not been into the forest but passed by yesterday and there was a small amount of snow on the side of the road. Expected to get warmer this week so I would guess there will be some puddles and the odd bit of lingering snow at the highest point, nothing to stop a trip though.

Think cafe is on winter opening hours so is unlikely to be open on tuesday.

Someone who rode at the weekend might be able to comment on actual trail conditions, have you tried the 7stanes website?

How are you cutting it? If you are planning on cutting with a hacksaw then stop and go get it cut properly by someone with some proper cutters and guide or you’ll end up with a wonky cut. They will stick the star nut in the right place for you. It’s easy to get it wrong, and replacement steerers are not cheap!

Sorry to say it, but you don’t sound confident. You could ask your lbs to show you as they do it so you will know for the future? As I said, easy (and expensive) to get it wrong…

Staropramen, gambrinus and pilsner urquell are your beers. It used to be if you spent more than 27p on a pint you were going to the wrong bars.

Absinth is a very good alternative. Try a tram crawl- get an all day ticket for the trams, jump on the nearest tram, get off at the first stop, head to nearest bar. Have drink. Repeat. You get to see a lot of the city. We had change out of £20 after 15 hours.

We also visited a nearby concentration camp and a tour of the glass blowing factory, cant remember either name but both were good. It’s a beautiful city, stay out of the main square if you want a drink!

Sorry, that was a typo. It is the revelation rlt ti which still looks like a cracking deal for a blackbox model fork:
    http://www.bikeoutlet.co.uk/products/Rockshox_Revelation_RLT_Ti_150mm_Forks_2011-1607-49.html

Crc had the purple marzocchi rc3 ti at £405 last week, the other colours were nearer £700 but they have gone.
Anybody else seen any deals I might have missed that they want to share?

Have been looking for something similar myself and have checked out every website I know of (and quite a few i had never heard of). Best deals are on the German websites bike-discount.de and bike24.de. best deals from the UK are either with winstanleys or a few on crc/Evans/merlin.

I have looked at options for me and could find loads of options with qr, a few good options with 15mm axles and nothing at the right price range with a 20mm axle. Not much out there if you need tapered either, although full 1.5 headset can find a few bargains.

If you are happy with qr then try the German websites or i could send a link to a set of revelation rc3 ti for £380 from a UK shop. I would prefer a coil fork, but was also tempted by some 2010 revelation team forks but again couldn’t find a bargain pair with a 20mm axle anywhere except America.

I already have a wheel built on 20mm axle with no option to reduce to 15mm which is why I am stuck with that axle.crc had sektor to coils at £200 a few weeks back out of stock til march so i left them. Suddenly they came back in stock and the rice went up to over £300!

    Good luck!

Got my dispatch order tonight for the other bits but the shifters havnt been dispatched. No email or phone call to say they are not in stock but the link to the shifters page says they are now discontinued.

Order had said they were in stock, but my guess is I will get a sorry email. May have to go for the saint shifters at £70 a set, but will be looking to get a discount as there would have been a £10 off if i had spent over £100 which I would have done with them included. This was my first order with them so not sure what they usually do if out of stock?

Why have shimano made their 9 speed stuff obsolete? It’s stupid, I’m not spending hundreds of pounds for the luxury of one more sprocket that I don’t want!

I bought SLX shifters with inner and outer cables for £36 yesterday, the link soon disappeared! And 4 of the painted inner cables for a fiver off ebay. Then again, I wouldnt buy cables at the price your mum paid for them- a good relationship with your LBS would have got them for less surely?

Out of interest, would you have any of the XPGs on the boards left over from those builds- I see you have gone onto bigger and brighter LEDs?
I was being a muppet and blew one of the LEDs and have been meaning for ages to get it sorted. Everything else still seems to be working, other LED is still on full blast so doesn’t look like I’ve harmed the other bits.

Not done any night riding this year as a result :(; currently injured so should have time to get it fixed before riding again.

Lifetime warranty for original owner (same as Marin). Of course if the shop dont ask, they won’t know 😀

If that doesn’t work i think you are looking at a bearing set for £60-90. Is there not a bearing press required for some of them aswell?

Had this before Christmas and made the mistake of going to work before the ‘real’ symtpoms started. Cue a rapid retreat back home and some fireworks- fortunately managed to separate the 2 acts from happening simultaneously. Strangely while it was all going on I kept thinking back to the iconic Picolax thread that keeps re-appearing on here and wondering if perhaps it was an office prank. I don’t get ill often, but this had me off work for 2 days and feeling pretty rubbish for about 2 weeks. Seemed to affect my appetite and everything I ate for those 2 weeks made me feel ill again.

Would re-iterate the above stuff. Get some rest and keep drinking (water obviously!). I passed it on to the rest of the household and was not popular, so if you havn’t got it then you probably will.

    Good luck!

Was following a car this morning coming up to a roundabout. They slowed down about half a km (no exaggeration) before the roundabout. Many hours later when we actually reached the approach for the roundabout they positioned themselves in the middle of the road and indicated right. Two lane approach, so pick a lane- more confirmation that roundabouts confuse drivers round here. Then they went off at the first exit (left) with the right hand indicator still on…!

Seeing the amount of bad driving that goes on round here I wouldnt fancy my chances of making it to work if I cycled, I would probably be dead. Even the police around here don’t know how to use lanes and indicators at roundabouts. Obviously like everyone else I am an ‘above average’ driver, but at least I know what an indicator is for (the clue is in its name)

There’s nothing wrong with his engine, it’s other things. The electrics don’t like getting wet, it goes through front tyres every few miles as there is probably too much power for a front wheel drive car. When things go wrong, the Alfa Romeo garages are hopeless. In fact, the first time it went to a garage, they “put” it on the back of a lorry. The result was an extra 30 miles on the odometre and no fuel left in the tank, he was not pleased- the garage could not account for the extra mileage and I think eventually were forced to pay up. When stuff goes wrong, it costs too much to repair. The standard exhaust on it was something like £700 without fitting, replacement standard brakes were about the same- so for both he went aftermarket.

But he will never sell it- like you he wanted to own an Alfa. I reckon it has spent more time off the road than on the road in the last 2 years. Despite that, he wants to get a smaller petrol 156 to get him to work and back. Then again, he has always had a skewed opinion on cars- a Fiesta XR2, a Ford Capri and now a 156 GTA…all memorable cars in their own right but not exactly the most reliable choice!
