perhaps a roadrat with an alfine from cotic for £969 if that isn’t too bling?

fine for tarmac and rough road commuting but really lively to ride offroad too. at its best for snatched singletrack on sunny days with 38c small block 8s.

Montane Prism works for me. That or whatever other packable primaloft has the right cut for you.

If it’s big hill/cold days on the bike or multiday stuff I’d combine it with a light waterproof rather then having an all-in-one jacket that would be too warm to ride in on its own.

I’m still astonished you can cram so much cosy into such a small and light jacket. Primaloft is ace.

    zombie christmas tree apocalypse!

was overtaken by one at some traffic lights the other night and rounded a corner to a shuffling horde of them advancing upon me this morning… fortunately they decided to attack a nearby parked car instead.

Is that MC Buzz B ?

Aye, from his work with Justin Robertson as Lionrock. Their album An Instinct for Detection is worth a listen.

and from Paradise Lost (also a poem by Milton) to the capital of hell in said epic – Pandemonium by Killing Joke.

Actually, it’s the snow studs I have rather than the marathon winters and, aye, at that price they are well worth giving a shot.

Dropping the pressure a touch on days when you know there’s a lot of ice about helps with grip on sheet ice and running them at higher pressure they roll better but still have the studs there if you run into unexpected slidey bits.

Marathon winters are great. I wish I had chucked them on before a nervy trip out the Water of Leith path yesterday afternoon. A few don’t brake, don’t steer, don’t breathe sections 😯

Have had mine on my commuting bike for the last four winters and they have held on to all of their studs and have plenty of tread left.

I would say they are well worth it even if it just keeps you riding on a few days over the winter. Have had a few situations where I just hadn’t realised there was ice on the ground until I stopped and put a foot down.

Have used Conti Spike Claw 120 stud (just on the outer edges like the Ice spikers scotroutes mentions) tyres on my mountain bike too. A good offroad all rounder, but would go with the Marathon Winters for a road/cycle path commute.

Nice timing on the PSA hammy 🙂

Must drag my bike up some bigger hills next year.

Lots of fun in the mountains this year, mostly without a bike.

Winter skills course with Glenmore Lodge as a Christmas gift kicked things off nicely.

Full winter traverse of Liathach with a couple of mountaineering friends shortly afterwards was incredible. Standing on top of the Am Fasarinen pinnacles was an breathtaking experience.

Beinn Eighe traverse the next day made for a brilliant winter mountaineering baptism of snow and ice.

Grabbed a few enjoyable days being rubbish at snowboarding when it refrained from blowing a hoolie at Cairngorm for long enough to dig out the train.

Took a couple more trips up to Glenmore later in the year as a mock student for Mountaineering Instructor Award assessments for some scrambling, climbing and navigation practice. If anyone wants to improve skills in the hills, climbing, kayaking, biking I would definitely recommend checking out their courses. The bar is good too.

Started indoor climbing at the beginning of the year and was soon trying to get outdoors as possible with a friend who was looking for a new partner. Lots of trips to Aberdour, Limekilns and Trapprain Law and my first tentative and terrifying trad leads.

Did some climbing on the ‘Beginners Slabs’ in Torridon and discovered that when a climbing guidebook says ‘not many gear placements’ it means there is absolutely nothing! The terror of my first uncomfortably runout pitch was swiftly followed by ms debaser’s first roped outdoor climb. She enjoyed it and we’re still speaking, which is a bonus 🙂

Three weeks off in the driest September since records began gave plenty of opportunity for wandering, camping, scrambling and climbing the Northwest highlands including my first excursions into the Cuillin proper… Wow!

Also made my first, and most definitely not last, trip up Stac Pollaidh. An incredible little hill I could happily spend hours playing on.

Not much biking of note aside from some great exploring around Inschriach in spring and finally doing the Gypsy Glen ride in the Tweed valley. The odd ride in the Pentlands and up in Moray too.

Aside from that… work, beer, gigs and just bought a house with better riding from the front door. Roll on the end of the house renovations so I can go out to play again.

Nice thread, missed this last week. Think these have all been mentioned aside from Dalek and Peeping Tom.

    Peeping Tom – Mojo

When Patton does hip-hop it’s pretty damn good.

People Under the Stairs – Much Too Much

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass

EDIT – Clean version misses some of the best linguistic gymnastics 🙁

Dalek – Eyes to Form Shadows

    mmmm, nice and dark.

Wu Tang Clan with added ponies as it’s Friday 😀

That looks like the same rebuild kit as is used on all DW link Turners including the newer 27.5 and 29 inch models. Would be really surprised if it was discontinued rather than just out of stock.

There’s a thread from last year that links to a bushing supplier. That might be a good place to start if the kits are unavailable and the bolts/linkages are all in good nick.

This thread and a newly plugged in chromecast/add the add to queue thing are improving my day greatly. Youtube links should be compulsory in all music threads.

First time I’ve heard FKA Twigs outside of a Flying Lotus tune, took me a minute to tune into the lyrics 😀

Argh, there’s lots above that I really should have listened to by now.

Here are my favourites, several swayed from like to love by seeing the bands live.

    Aphex Twin – Syro
I’m on the ‘love it’ side of the divided opinions. Sounds incredibly fresh to my ears.

The Phantom Band – Strange Friends
Listened to this album a lot. Ms debaserloves them, so much we made a trip up to Aberdeen to see them at the Tunnels. After a long wait for this record, they are about to bring out another new album in the new year. Hooray.

    Shellac – Dude Incredible
Trainer, Weston and Albini can do no wrong. And they have written an anthem for STW…

    Amazing Snakeheads – Amphetamine Ballads
Good album, great songs… but live? Oh my. Even standing at the back of the venue by the bar this band drip malevolence and swagger in equal measure. Superb.

    Honeyblood – Honeyblood
Saw these guys support Sleigh Bells a couple of years ago and was quite taken with their catchy tunes and lo-fi stylings. The album has a little more pop polish than their demo versions, but I’ve grown to like the refined sound.

    Mogwai – Rave Tapes
This one is my album of the year, until I catch up with all the ones I should have listened to and change my mind again.

    oh, the Burning Hell too.

    Iron Maiden – Powerslave

My art teacher had the 7 inch sleeves for loads of Maiden singles on her classroom wall. Aces High was my favorite sleeve so I started with Powerslave. Maiden are a little hit and miss for me, but I have a soft spot for them.

    Suicidal Tendencies – ST

More hardcore than metal, but it influenced many and still sounds great.

    Carcass – Symphonies of Sickness

Spotted this spectacular album sleeve being proudly carried around school by a now friend of mine. It sounds as good it looks and carcass are still getting better decades later.

    Slayer – Reign in Blood

I will be moving into a detached house shortly, one of the first things I shall do is put this on and turn it up to appropriate volume 🙂

    nin – pretty hate machine

As someone else on the thread said, I’m surprised this actually sneaks into the 80s. Cracking record.

After similar brew method exploration, my happy coffee place ended up being a second hand (but virtually unused) gaggia baby class from eBay (£65), porlex mini hand grinder (£45) and – most importantly – freshly roasted beans from hasbean.

Good faff:reward ratio and not silly expensive.

Citizen M is great, but as tomthumb says, its in a fairly quiet residential bit of town. Good tram link though and pretty reasonably priced.

Was over for a gig a few weeks ago and gave Air BnB a whirl. Got a decent basement apartment in Jordaan for less than a hotel would have been. Nice to have a proper kitchen, dining table and lots of space. Would check reviews pretty thoroughly, but worth a punt.

Stayed in this place a while back too Hotel Luxer[/url] clean cheap and very central. Terrible name, expected it to be rubbish but was very pleasantly surprised.

Very close to De Prael brewery which is worth a visit wherever you end up staying… great beer, friendly staff and good food too.

Been totally distracted by being terrible at rock climbing this year, only been out offroad on a bike about a dozen times 😳

However, I have just bought a house very close to the Pentlands so should manage to get out on some evening rides and get back to putting some effort into being crap at mountain biking too 🙂

Also, congratulations Mark (and family), and hello to Iain, Steven, Andrew and other folks I’ve not been out on a ride with for far too long.

Hehe, I’m in for the pies, fish & chips and pubs Pootle 550.

Having ridden bits of this in holiday bikepacking mode – and some bits just on day rides – I am in awe of the folk covering the terrain at such a pace.

Looks like Iona is heading into the Fisherfield and AlasdairMc is about to hit the Drochaid Coire Lair descent. Both amazing places to ride, but with and 340 and 400 miles behind them respectively it’s, well, just… wow.

Cannot quite believe how engaging a spectator sport this is.

Still cannot believe the pace these folk are traveling at. Incredible.

There is a wee emergency shelter behind the locked bothy at Larachantivore, but you wouldn’t want to unless you really had too. Room for two gently weeping adults at a push. Makes Carnmore look like a palace.

This evening – whilst enjoying the fabulous Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – I visited a live music venue with some decent beer on tap for a change. £3.70 for a pint of Joker IPA may not be cheap, but it was the first time in a while I have been able to see a good band without having to suffer dreadful overpriced beer at the same time.

I can cope with good overpriced beer, just not pish overpriced beer 🙂

Best way onto Skye is the Glenelg ferry. It’s fifteen quid, but worth doing once for the entertainment value and makes it feel like you are actually arriving on an island, which I don’t think the bridge does as well.

Spar Cave near Elgol is worth a visit at low tide.

Bla Bhein is a great hillwalk with amazing views of the Cuillin and Glen Sligachan.

The seafood gumbo at Creelers is pretty damn good too.

    and this,

    Stone Junction – Jim Dodge

as it’s one of the most odd, funny, arresting and wonderful things I’ve ever read.
