If it is a fresh dead thing, my Springer may pick it up. If it’s old and rancid he’ll just roll around on it.

edit: He will run after furry things though without success

My old cat wasnt fussed; if it moved and was smaller than him then he’d try to kill it. He brought a rabbit through the cat flap once.

Commute 10 miles 5 days/ week . Try and do 1 ride with the dog at the weekend and if possible one solo/ small group ride during the week around shifts although 3 times out of 4 this doesnt happen

Could you make a cut in the crown race? assuming you are using bearing inserts with a taper, it might squeeze the crown race onto the steerer when you load up the bearings.

I have an FSA orbit headset (SH) that came with a home-cut crown race and it works well.

It was pointed out to me that I lean myself more than the bike and it was suggested that as an excercise I should try to feel the seatpost on my inside leg to try and force a lean out of the bike

Tell you what, it works. It initially felt or wrong, but as a new age ‘bike leaner’ I feel more confident now

I decided to change the bushes in some old fox forks once.

Made the tool to extract the old bushes ok and it worked fine. Turned up a dolly to push in the new bushes and pressed the first one in fine.

    Aren’t I clever?

well no, because I took the second lower bush, and pressed it in ON THE SAME SIDE. There was no chance of getting it back out without without mullering it. I had a trip planned 2 days later. Luckily I bought some lowers from here and they arrived in time.

One of the biggest costs is not financial its the time you have to devout to them…

on a day like today it could be tempting to stay at home and forget walking the dog but that isn’t an option…Ill take the dogs to the woods and we’ll all come home and have baths 🙂 Might leave the bike at home this time…

If you have a longer haired dog you may need to pay for grooming too. We pay about 50 quid every 4-6 months for two Spaniels

You will also needs vaccinations and boosters

As far as insurance goes, I pay about 40/ month (2 dogs) which sounds a lot but after heart problems (cocker), grass seeds (both), and a few other issues, we have had more out than we have put in!

You will also need to pay for kennels if you are away. (or have understanding family) We never leave ours for more than 4-5 hours so if we are out for the day we make sure someone comes and looks in on the dogs for us. Lots of things to consider

    Its worth every penny

Not much of a photo but to me it captures how I felt at the time. Felt stressed. Put bike on car. Rode around for a couple of hours. Came home feeling healed.

I don’t have the chance to ride at weekends that often but I had planned to go out this afternoon – it doesn’t seem right to stay at home.

That said, it is pretty gash out there…

I use a large syringe and 155ml goes in through the lowers no problem.
I usually stick about 30ml in the lowers on the air side

You are not trying to stick 155ml on top of the air spring are you? You only put 5ml of 80-90 synthetic gear oil (float fluid) in there

You must also make sure you emptied the damper of the old oil when you stripped it because there will be some trapped in there

Ah; now you’ll have to drink proper beer instead

I tried it. Turns out my palate was not sophisticated enough. (Well I am from Gloucester)

I met a couple of chaps a few years ago who had been working all day
to protect an ancient longbarrow in Standish woods.

It was being eroded by bikes using it as the starting point for two trails. The guys had done a lot of work repairing the erosion with gravel, coving the thing in bramble and even sticking big logs either end to discourage people from riding on it.

What was missing was a sign to say what was being done and why.
Within a week all their work was undone.

    4 Miles each way.

I Started riding before my Son was born around 4 1/2 years ago; I hadn’t been near a bike for about 15 years at this point and I thought my heart was going to blow up after the first mile.

I work shifts so I avoid most of the traffic. I did have a lorry undertake me on a roundabout once though. I had to jump onto the kerb to avoid being squashed with his trailer.

Banter aside, Cheltenham really is a fine place and the people who live there are very proud of it. If we want to do some “proper” shopping we would go there rather than here in Gloucester (don’t get me started on Gloucester Quays). There is some excellent property, too

I have friends from Chelt, the Stroud Valleys and FOD who all ride together in each other’s back yards, Mostly from our front doors.

    Gloucestershire is ace 🙂

Don’t move to Cheltenham; you will get your bike nicked.
    ….by someone from gloucester.

who recently moved to Cheltenham and got in with some bad boys 🙂

There is lots of good riding round here. Cheltenham has better cars

When I went from Clips to flats, I was keeping my foot position the same until I forced a change

I would move your feet forward a bit like others have said. It feels “wrong” but it works. As well as dropping your heels its good to push with your feet (and hands)

I might get flamed for this but are your brakes set a bit low?. If you can rotate your wrists down a bit it might bring your body down . You seem to be standing quite tall.

If you are using a SD box connected on scart presently, then the New box on HDMI will look much nicer, even on Standard Channels.

(I am on Virgin, but same sort of thing)

I rarely watched the HD channels I had but the box is good. If you already have the HD box but not the channels then (personally) i wouldnt bother for a tenner

Be careful of oil grades. One man’s 5W is another’s 10W

Its the Cst@40 deg that is important. The old school 7Wt oil used in my forks was 32CST ish so I used Rock Oil 10W which is about the same.

    fork oil weights

nb the fox oil on that chart is the old stuff they used to use. Do a bit of googling. Fox red/ green might be more like 47? .Dunno

This ^^ focus on riding smoothly and flowing, less on going fast

we concentrated on this during a skills course. The instructor told us to lay of the brakes coming out of the last corner and seeing how far we rolled to guage exit speed/ momentum

After smoothing everything out and feeling less ragged, there was a significant increase in exit speed/ momentum exiting the last corner that was evident in how far you rolled. When I got it right there wa less brakes/ more flow and it felt ace!

It’s a cultural difference. In the US “spaz” is slang for wild and crazy, rather than over here in the UK where it’s more usually accompanied with a belm.

    not just wheelchairs

Only 2 occurences of sick time allowed in a rolling year permitted for us with return to work interviews etc etc.

Any more than 2 occasions and you enter into a disciplinary process where you can be taken of the sick pay sceme.
