Ive never felt the need but that comes from being a trained and experienced shop mechanic but what i also know is more and more components have specific needs. back when i was learning you would rarely see anything in carbon for example but if we did out came the TW2.

Oh the original Kona explosif frame a guy sold me with the stuck seatpost in it for £25 which i promptly fixed and sold for £150 on ebay

My kona fire mountain SS. I bought it as frame and forks for £25 stripped removed some extraneous bosses and repainted in white with grey forks. It was my first SS back when it wasn’t a big thing and a guy from here came to look at it to see what the big deal was lol. It rode lovely and it was my first introduction to niche the first thing that said you know what don’t stick with the status quo and build bikes you want to ride.

brand new Cotic Soul frame, after midnight trying to get the bike ready for a ride the next day. putting an old BB in, I spent about 30 minutes just trying to get the thread to bite. when it finally did it just got tighter as I screwed it in so I just went with it… probably crossed the threads. that was a couple of years ago and the BB needs changing. I daren’t unscrew it incase I’ve knackered the BB threads.

Did this with a 456 frame and my trusty raceface taperlock. Luckily the taperlock cups were made of aluminum so although knackered the frame was fine and i was only £15 down on a new BB.

Never broke anything while spannering at home, mostly due to lots of ham fisted experience when i used to work at halfords lol

It fitted just fine, took a few attempts to get in but thats more down to my home-made headset installer solution. Its now seated fine and shows no signs of looseness.

The miura was always notorious for setting fire to itself which is one of the reasons there so rare these days.

Most are taken very good care of these days and Im sure the cars self immolation was nothing to do with with the fact it was being filmed by these guys. http://www.youtube.com/user/TaxTheRich100

Well ive gone with the 32mm one, its still longer than most and the knurled finish should give grip.

Now ive just got to cut the forks….

This thread was pretty much guaranteed to attract double entendre rather than useful advice…

Was it too much to hope for both?

I opened this thread with caution. I’m happy to say I’m relieved…

Well thats just your dirty mind.

    Is insertable length important?

Oh dont forget to disconnect your back brake, if you accidentally pull it as i have done in the past the roller keeps on going and can if your not careful rub a nice chunk out of the tyre. This may just be idiot me though lol

Okay best of both worlds went to an LBS i never usually go in and they showed me to the tools and left me to it, 5 minutes later the spider was off.

I used to but they went when i sold my rc36’s, Pace do have lots of spares though so worth a try. When i took mine off a couple of years back i needed the square bit to replace them. Pace were only too happy to sell me some.

Schwalbe tubes come with the adapter nut as standard http://wallbike.com/blog/2009/02/20/schwalbes-super-stem/ I love these tubes, its amazing how much work has gone into them seriously.

You need security torx, it has a little post in the centre which means you need a specific torx tool to remove it and cannot use an allen key. Otherwise there are specific security fittings available like these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=33192

Saw the Surly which would be perfect if i wasn’t doing a 1×9 build. Thanks wwaswas and Tim, im going to try some application of heat on saturday, if its a no go im going to bite the bullet with the LBS.

Wouldn’t trust my LBS as far as i could throw them unfortunately.

At this rate i may up just getting an unramped ring to go on my existing spider but have you tried getting a CD 5 bolt ring there like hens teeth.

Very simple, just have it melted down and made into body panels for your rolls royce then drive it across.

    {Amusingly named henchmen and large industrial laser optional}

Yes the scandal is a 29er, the forks are chinese direct from a company called carbonzone http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/carbon-zone-29er-forks at some point in the future ill have to get them cut down but thats a while off yet still lots to do. The scandal has brought up some interesting things so far, the headset was a funny one, just discovered my 160mm BB7 avid calliper wont fit as standard so now i have to decide to get an adapter or re-think my brake choice. Oh and the bb is 73mm instead of the standard 68mm which is a sod because i wanted to use my square tapered middleburns and the choice for 73mm bb is not great.

Some great works in progress there.

Thanks for the input everyone, i hadn’t got to the bashing stuff with rocks stage quite yet.

It hadn’t occurred to me but phoning them was the best course of action and just the kick up the bum they needed, refund received.

Ditto on the WTB Laserdiscs built up really nicely, cant fault the quality not the lightest rims in the world but you know the old saying:

    Cheap
    Strong
    Light

    Pick two.
