LOL – what a night last night.

Going from 2 yrs on a Mk2 Stooge to Sppeedball my mate was flying…

A regular Wednesday nighter turned into a 7 hour let’s push the boat out, extended loop (ott 4 pubs later too)…

He was flying on the bike, giggling all over his face

Looks great all brand new XT built up. The paint job is oustounding – seems like there’s a very protective, plastic coasting on top

@Jupiter the truss fork assembly is tricky. The headset is 2 top cups. You then offer up the fork to the head tube and slide through a steerer tube while holding all headset bits and any spacers in place

Takes me about an hour of faffing, including pressing in the cups

Haven’t ridden the Tarn, but from what I know of it, it is a very different geometry bike (very long front). Stooge will be more neutral, upright, ‘in the bike’ riding position, easier to pop the front etc. One may say more raggable?

Andy Stooge works in Llandegla bike centre – you could try one :)

Pjay – I’ve actually got 2 JJ Plus’s now – one in the classifieds, and a slightly different one which is my ride

This Stooge I’ve built for my mate – good to try them back to back though

Stu – lol, yeah, they’re much better now I’ve changed the bars for Stooge’s Moto Risers

    Those Salsa ones weren’t working

Thing is, that HS is a Jones double topper, and I think only comes in silver…

As for bars, I do have a Stooge Moto bar, and will try them. Thought we would go for flats to start with

There’s no need to try and change my mind – I love my £200 Kansi. I was going ’round telling folk it was one of the best things I’d ever bought :)

Even if money was no object I wouldn’t buy a Brompton. 16″ wheels you may as well buy a skateboard J

The Brompton only folds a bit smaller than most of the others – there’s not that much in it, although London Underground specify Brompton only

I paid £200 for a minter of a Kansi (different to Dahon). It had mudgaurds (a must as said), and a rear rack with a ‘Kansi’ stretch cord for securing what you’re carrying

In the train, I sit on the single folder seat by the door with the bike slid beside me – totally out the way

    Brompton are:

    1) Overpriced
    2) The wheels are too small

    I went with a Kansi https://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/folding/product/review-kansi-3twenty-10-39408/

The Kansi runs 20″ wheels which I really wanted – more comfort than Brompton’s 16″

I went with a Sram hub gear set-up as that means no rear mech/der to get oily/dirty for when carrying/transporting etc. The 3 -speed is fine all scenarios

Build quality is superb (I have compared with other folders)

    It folds in record time

I’ve really enjoyed using it and bought it ebay used for £200 – bargain

    1 Year on Thread Resurrection…

Anyone picked up a Plus SWB Spaceframe with Truss (or Diamond)?

I have been blatting a 25″ Plus w/ Truss running 3″ tyres F&R for 18 months and love the confidence, throw it down anything, speed and momentum, and the all-day comfort it gives

I’m looking for more standover (strange proportioned body/legs combo) so am looking at a large SF/truss which will give a whopping 8″ more standover than what I have now

The ‘large’ Plus SF does not currently exist, but is very near…

    UPDATE:

    Ride Report – I’m impressed :)

Found an Italian site offering these tyres so ordered, and almost next day it arrived (8 euro postage)

Aired up fine, set pressure to 10 psi (front) and went out for a ride

The first thing I was looking at was rolling ability and I have to say it does very well both trail and tarmac

It wasn’t long before I was leaning and pushing the bike into turns feeling the big knobs dig in and squirm

Half way through the ride after a few mile road section (~30mile XC) I finger checked the pressure and it had gone down to I would say ‘almost flat’ I had been stopped at a pub for one at that point, so how long it had been like that I don’t know, but I hadn’t felt it… It’s still up this morning, so all’s good

    So, overall very good.

The Knard was a big fail. I tried one and it was summer and dusty, which the tyre coped with, but show it any kind of dirt mixed with water and it falls apart – mud is just impossible.

There’s some decent 29+ rubber out there. Chronicle, Ranger, Chuppa to name a few

Hope you manage to get out more

FYC – have you been able to compare it to a 3″ Minion?

I’ve ran that through winter and found it to be OK for those conditions, but saw a big rolling difference changing to something with lesser knobs

Thanks for the thumbs up Tazzy

Only negative I’ve come across is rolling and weight (1.5Kg’s)

I’ve just bought a WTB Ranger (3″ and thought it to come up small, but it is indeed 76mm across the casing. That weighs in at just over 900gms. and although it’s early days, seems a good tyre

Looking at it now the Crux measures 78mm (42 wide rim) so wonder if it’s really much of a benefit for the coming season

Knobs look pretty aggressive so maybe better for more challenging mud/winter?

@ rock dog – I can see a ~£150 bike being naff, but this Claude Butler was up for nearly £500

Here are some pics of the bike

I reckon it’s a very well made and designed machine. The hinges are very clever, all in one, literally release and it starts to fold. There’s just the two hinges and the seatpost to drop and that’s it. Takes 10 seconds to fold/unfold

No creaking of flex, even standing

Smallish 90 psi tyres are what they are, but the bike does exactly what I hoped it would. I did fondle a Claude Butler (Nimbus) the other day and it was a shocker of a poorly made and quality bike

    Thanks M Rider.

I’m liking the look of the Tern Node. Looks a good bike to me and the 24″ wheels make sense. I ride a 29+ MTB and the thought of say a 16″ Brompton just fills me with nervy twitches

Are they similar to the brompton though – and I was trying to avoid the 16″ wheels… may have to compromise
