It’s kind of interesting how this bike that seems to be based on Jonesesque geo has got all the owners up in arms when they’ve seen one shit revue.
Yet Jones owners that see shit reviews of Jones bikes just carry on riding there Jones bikes and don’t really care.

    Runs for cover.

LOL – apart from with (the relatively few) Jones’ owners, I don’t think there is much of an association anymore Stooge with Jones, despite their appreciable similarities. The more bikes of this ilk the better imo, so I’m calling long puller

The point of this thread is the shit review, and its uncanny negativity on what are essentially non-issues (rigid bike compromised in rocky conditions shocker etc)

    @ lol tazzy :)

    No.

Care to add anything more, or is ‘no’ going to be the only word you post in response to the many critical comments re your Stooge ‘review’

Thanks, that’s good of you to offer. I’m in the Midlands though

    OK, thanks

    First off – looking good

While you’re on can I ask what makes a back-packing bike?

I thought it was a regular bike which may have a couple of fork fixings for panniers

An example being a Jones – all round bike which can decked out with frame bags

    Good feedback PP – thanks

    First, what is PDI?

Your demo/test sled is a 7 isn’t it, or at least the HT version of Stache?

The general consensus from feedback here and elsewhere (MTBR too where the bikes have been around for some time) is all good for the HT’s, but there’s little to no e-reportage of the rigid 5 which is the bike I am very interested in and being the 29 plus platform

Of course there’s going to be similarities and I take that as good, but it’s Trek’s execution of the Rigid which I would like to try – it all looks good, my only reservation is how the front feels weight wise

I have asked my LBS if they can arrange a demo, so finger’s crossed :)

You need to find (or rather find someone who can) out if it’s hip down, knee down, or ankle up issue :)

    Most likely is ankle up

Any Achilles’s symptoms, past history of any same sided leg or lower back injury/pain etc?

The key things I need to know is how rider’s weight is balanced on the Stache 5 and how that translates to how much weight is on the front

And other thing is how agile this bike (and 29+ in general) is with those mahoosive hoops – especially when compared to 27+

Ah, so someone’s saying 1700 measured

Can’t seem to find the info

I bought one off the group buy along with a smudge battery – all’s still going well, but I would like a longer burn time

A battery upgrade will cost £89 so I’m considering if it’s worth it, or upgrading

    Oh dear

(good work BTW – back to the Stooge then? Don’t take any notice of the Greg downer piece. He’s focused on non-issues)

Any recommendations where to buy the finned Shimano F03C metalic?

    Struggling to find them

I’ll give it a go then

I’m going to try and get my LBS to become a Brooks seller again, or at least grab a demo one to try

They were dealers a while back, but had to sell off all the stock of the old brown leather jobbies at cost as they didn’t sell

    Hmmm… not looking good then

The squeak is the first thing you see said about these :(

I’ve got Fizik’s on my bikes and they have been good, but one did break the other day across the middle. I was running it on a layback post all the way back on the rails so can’t knock it

Takes a while to find saddles you can like, but Brooks are doing a loan demo service where you can loan one for a week or so to see if you like them

His right to an opinion is not in question, it’s the quality of the ‘review’ or is it intended to be some kind of blog entry, in which case it’s a different story?

I thought reviews highlighted pro’s and con’s, how the bike rides and then gives a conclusion?

The only pro mentioned are the aesthetics, otherwise the piece reads like there’s nothing good going on, the bike is a compromised retro (nice) styled bone rattler – a big fail, when clearly it’s popular among owners, as well as dealers who have put their name behind the bike

What are they seeing that Greg isn’t? I think a non-Stooge owner would like to know from reading a review from a popular online source

    Maybe I’m completely off-beam??

    I smell bad blood

Didn’t STW refuse to ‘review’ the Stooge shortly after its conception?

As the thread is now 28 pages long and Stooge has 100% positive feedback from all her owners I suppose STW had to buckle

The above linked review by Greg however (whoever he is) is balanced overwhelmingly in the negative, even down to mentioning the kit the review Stooge was supplied with

The reviewer’s language use is also overly negative – the Slaughter does not get ‘crammed into the rear’ I have a MK1 Stooge (which has less clearance than the MK2) and have ran a Slaughter. It has comfortable room, and works very well in the Stooge

What about the bit ‘It was envisaged as a bike-packing bike, the use that many people have been building them for.’ Is this true? I thought the Stooge was conceived for hooning through the woods, not 90Km commuting? And most of the owners’ pics I see here are on the trail

‘And sadly, there’s not enough room for a 29+ rear.’ lol, what a faux pas. Stooge is not a 29+ bike

As for comfort, I can only say from my 12 months of regular (have done some 4-5 hour rides) use comfort has not been an issue. I use a Fizzik Gobi and a Kent Ti layback Sweetpost. I’m 6’2″ as well

Disappointingly hardly surprising, inaccurate bike hack journo stuff :)

    Hey Al, looking good

I don’t think I can see myself changing from rigid (steel Stooge)

What saddle is that you’re running? (My Fiziik is on the way out) Cheers

The HA is indeed ‘steep’ as well as ‘low’ which seems to translate for me as as a heavy front and weight forward

Interested in this bike but am waiting for feedback from folk with seat-time

Plus is where it’s at :-)

Not tried 29+ yet, but the emerging consensus seems plus both sizes is beneficial

    They are OK

Everything happens a bit slower on one though

They ‘suffer’ most on off road climbing

They’re the safest bike to get you home from the pub on :)

Semi-fat ‘plus’ is the way forward :) Best of both

Like the look of those Travers frames

    Is there a rigid option?

Thanks again PP – all good

It’s the 5 feedback I’m eager to hear of.

Although your ‘low front’ comment of the 9 is my impression of what the 5’s front may well be like, which for a rigid means weight forward :(
