blimey, you really were lit up, that is an impressive array of lighting and visibility equipment!

Even more baffling you were hit!

Its primarily a backup torch, so rechargeables aren’t actually much help

These primaries are small and light enough to carry spares, and cheap (online)

Plus their chemistry means they won’t discharge over time and they have a long tail, so fade over a period of time rather than run at full whack and suddenly drop off

For that reason I reckon it makes a good lightweight bivi type light, or as a backup

I’ve got a holy hand grenade on my xmas list (cateye tl ld1100)

Sorry to hear about your accident mate?

Mind if I ask questions about the lit up like a christmas tree bit? (For my own benefit here!)
    – how many front lights did you have?
    – where they flashing or solid
    – which ones?
    – bar or helmet mounted?
    – was it light or dark? What sort of hi vis clothing were you wearing?

From the angle (where their lights aren’t on you) then reflective stuff isn’t much use I guess

I’ve got one on my xmas list too. I got the previous version for a pressie last xmas, that one resides in my saddle bag. I want the other one for other backup uses (like travelling and as a general spare)

Its not massively bright so you could ride with it, but for close up tasks and general camp duties (setting up, breaking down, cooking, chores) its fine. Once you’re out in the open your eyes are night adjusted anyway so you don’t want anything massively bright, in fact you really want a red light so your eyes remained night adjusted, the e+lite has this.

The new one is smaller, the old one has an elastic strap so it packs bigger (and comes in a little case), but it has a whistle on the strap so is good for keeping for emergencies)

    torchy boy on ebay
ollie/marmaduke on here was selling battery packs for the SS x2, came with keepower cells which are good (I bought a pack myself)
    or places like flashaholics

All sorts, but I keep back ups knowing I’ll forget (spare socks, spare boxers, spare towel, spare trousers and shirts, spare shoes, spare belt etc). Also motorbike in so this stuff can serve double purposes

A little while ago I forgot my wallet and keys – couldn’t buy anything, had to go into London for a meeting and didn’t have my oyster card, couldn’t get back into the house easily, couldn’t lock my bike at work etc etc. On top of that I was out the office for nearly a week so wasn’t comfortable my bike would be secure without being locked, had to leave it by the printer in a big open plan area of the office. Lesson learnt (I hope)

There are plenty of top tube bags available, surely one of those might work

There’s a Deuter shown above, but Topeak and Alpkit do ones, as well as quite a few other manucaturers

I have the Topeak Tribag for my phone and basic essentials, I’ve been pleased with it so far

How close do you have to be for it to be of benefit?

I’ve had people behind me on my commute but frankly I’m not going that quickly so I doubt they’re doing it for speed! I’d always assumed it made a nice change to follow someone for a bit

Some of them have then proceeded to overtake a while later, others either drop behind or turn off

    I’d be an outdoors instructor

My main barrier to doing this is the huge drop in pay and the required relocation to somewhere more hilly

CBA with all the cables, that’s why I have an 18650 light on my head, spare battery is my saddle pack

    Thanks for the pic.

I’ll go zefal deflector as 1st choice, mudhugger as 2nd

X mini here too, had them for a good couple of years

Very impressive for the size, and usb rechargeable so work with my chargers and adapters when travelling

If I wanted more sound I’d just buy more and daisy chain them together

I’m trying to do once a week to work over the winter. Its 16 miles each way. Takes planning to make sure I only have to have my essentials in a bumbag and all my stuff at work

I want to go to the gym as well so going in more often wouldn’t work so well, plus meeting etc get in the way

I’d be knackered doing it everyday. Was doing it about twice a week in the warmer weather

Wow, just clicked the link. Its a nice unit but its not worth more than an SS X2 surely?

100%, without a shadow of a doubt worth the extra

I can get my bike loaded on top of my car in well under a minute, its that easy

Looks like you were experiencing good weather at that particular moment!

Nice little list of stuff. Are you able to find trees to hammock from easily?

Hmmm, haven’t added them up but I’d say at least 25, with about 8 worn fairly regularly

How can people only 1 pair of work shoes? I have about 6 pairs of black shoes!

I’m liking the zefal one, looks like a front runner. No stock in that link though, will have a google

I read in some reviews that the topeak one fouls a big seat pack, my one is pretty big

Would be interested in pics of the mudhugger

Whats your kit list in that mate? Do you carry a rucksack with bits in as well?

    benp1

If I put my X2 on full the indicator lights drop by one, down to medium or low and the lights go back up again

I can get around two hours on medium out of the standard pack that came with it. I’ve got a better pack now though so I should be able to turn it up or last longer

I have to say that medium was fine combined with a helmet mounted light

I picked up a fluxient u2 mini from torchy boy on ebay. Depending on what kit you already have (18650 batteries or charger) then the price changes

I paid about £50 but I got the charger (wanted a spare for work) and 2 good quality 18650 batteries

The light is perfect for commuting, and very quick to remove when I park up at work

I have a double seat bike trailer. I’ve only had it a couple of months, my daughter had just turned 1 so that was the first time they came out on it

How much was your new screen? (parts only)

I had mine replaced by Apple, walked in with my phone, they gave me a new phone and transferred the warranty. Used iCloud to sync the info, walked out happy. So easy and much safer than the dodgy back alley phone shops I was asking, especially considering it was the same price!

I bought a double trailer for the kids (1 and 2) and have been using it with my MTB to cycle with the dog round the park and for simple paths. The kids absolutely love it

It wasn’t a fancy one as I wanted to see how much use I’d actually get out of it, and how much the kids would like it, but so far its a complete winner!

Even in the cold they’re happy once I’ve put blankets etc in

I’ve been very hesitant to use it on the road or even cycle paths on the road, do you guys use them on the road?

The other problem is having to get through width restrictions/gates etc, makes life difficult

Reluctant – sorry, that was my point, Apple do iphone and ipad chargers, the former are 1A, the latter are more like 2.1A

Apple charger is just a brand, like a Samsung charger

eBay chargers are often just white copies, not really Apple ones. I’ve been happy with just fairly standard cheapish chargers off ebay, never had a problem [touch wood]

    benp1

As has been said they’re all 5v

Current generally varies from 500ma to about 2.1A. Laptops output 500mA typically, phone chargers around 500mA to 1A, smartphones about 1A and tablets about 2A

If its a clever device it will limit how much current is being sent to it so it doesn’t burn out

The lower the current the ‘nicer’ the charging, but the longer it takes

Sometimes its just easier to buy stuff in the UK. Sending batteries isn’t so straight forward but you certainly don’t wait weeks to get stuff, at most its generally days

Granted you pay more, but once I’ve bought it I generally want to use it fairly soon – certainly for toys like this anyway

I have run flats on my car so the spare wheel well has a load of emergency kit tucked in there. My emergency warm jacket is a Keela Belay jacket, very warm and pretty cheap

If you need something warm and cheap the other option is the army Softie jackets

My other synthetic fill jackets are nicer and more expensive so they’re used more regularly or saved for proper outdoors use

16 miles each way here, trying to average out at once a week if possible

Cycled on Friday and the weather and conditions were awful, had to go a different way as the bike path was flooded (and I discovered too late unfortunately)

Would like to do it more but want to go to the gym as well and can’t manage both, plus offsite meetings and other commitments make it difficult

    benp1

I’m fairly well covered with warm outer layers
    – 2 down jackets
    – 3 down vests
    – 4 primaloft jackets
    – 2 primaloft vests
    – 1 primaloft set of arms…!

Nearly all of them are of the lightweight style of jacket, rather than heavy duty winter use

The primaloft ones are definitely more use than the down ones as I’m generally not in places that are cold enough to warrant a down jacket, plus I find them too warm.

The real question here is what do you want it for? Is it winter pub wear, or are you using it in the outdoors. If so, is it for camp wear or when you stop for a break at the top of a hill. If you care about getting it wet then primaloft or other synthetic insulation is the way forward, otherwise down packs down better and will last longer

Brother Will, thanks, that stand looks good

I’m going to look for something similar but perhaps slightly cheaper. I’m also going to see if I can find a fishing rod rest that might work for the same purposes as it’ll probably be cheap, not sure how small it will fold though…
