I’ve been looking for a decent one to work in for 11 years

On the strength of knowing where you’ve worked…

No Worries Phil – that post was directed at Hora, as he generally likes to have a moan at LBS’s

To address your points rather than just taking the pish (but in a nice laughing with you, not at you way!)

Shop A) Don’t see a problem with this – prices are all RRP and labour not outrageous. As far as the crank goes, maybe it was ok when you got it serviced and something happened to it later? Although why did you specifically ask about it at the service, was there already a problem?

Shop B) – Sounds dickish. I can understand shops not giving out whate size/geometry/posiotion to stop showrooming, but you paid these guys for a bikefit – name and shame.

Shop C) – Maybe the guy serving was having a bad day (not an excuse, but it happens), Or maybe your Missus picked up on something that wasn’t really an issue? Either way, not ideal if it’s put you off using them.

Hope this helps, and trust me, not all LBS’s are the same!

Are you A, B or C then Adam?

    None of them AFAIK 😛

If I was able to get retail +2 hours labour for case A though, I reckon I’d be that little bit closer to finishing my mansion!

You’re absolutely right, all LBS’s are bastards, and their owners live in mansions constructed from the shattered dreams of penniless mountain bikers.

Let me take a wild guess here and say you probably have one extra spacer on there. If you have a 73mm bb you only need ONE spacer on the drive side. If you have a 68mm (or whatever the smaller one is) BB then you need TWO spacers. One on each side.

It’s 3 spacers on a 68mm – normally 2 drive side, 1 none drive. Perhaps you’re thinking of Sram GXP where its a spacer each side for 68, and none for 73.

If you’re not light on kit, I’d watch out for that Turnix saddle.
They are awesome and comfortable, but I’ve broken 2 carbon rails now and grudgingly switched to ti, which to date has been flawless.

It’s not out for a couple of months yet!
Think of all the riding you can do before they’re obselete the new ones come out.

If it gets as bad as the race there last month, you’ll probably be carrying on the bits where mud tyres would be an advantage anyway!

Ron and Ralph for me (I’m in Vets so I’ll have finished chewing up the course by the time you start!)

Pro 2 evo on Tech XC is our go to wheel upgrade for Big 9’s.
I’ve been running them on my own for about a year now. They’re only about 20g heavier than crests, but I prefer running a rim with eyelets.

Maybe I’m missing the point here – but gold service or no, why would the cranks have been taken off?

    Degreasing the drivetrain I’d imagine.

    EDIT – Ninja’d

They remade it in the early 2000’s
Wasn’t awful, but didn’t have the cool of the original!

Ideal, rock down to Wilford, bang on the doors and ask them why they haven’t got a demo fleet!

    Adam@BikeWorks

19″ should be fine for you.
The 160 only comes in Little (17″) or Big(19″).
I’m an inch shorter than you and I find the 19 feels pretty big.

As for demo bike… Merida UK don’t have a demo fleet (which is something I bring up with them constantly…) So you’re gonna need to find a shop near you that has a demo one of their own – whereabouts are you?

They’re awesome, but then I would say that…

Good levels of spec for an LBS brand, lifetime warranty on frames, bearing life is good and they are all regular sizes – no ludicrously expensive bespoke bearing kits required – internal cable routing is done well and is quick/doesn’t require the use of tiny robots to replace.

Sold a 900 to a friend at Christmas and it has absolutely transformed his riding.

If Olly2097 is who I think it is, I sold him his too 😀

I went into the cafe near work today and the owner greeted me with “I heard on the radio this morning that 90% of cyclists take drugs.”

    Awesome…

There’s 2 years warranty on them IIRC – Take them back?
We had some Zee’s at work that had a similar issue, and they were replaced under warranty.

    Dawes Red feather?
Dutch “style” but in alu – not sure how much the current one weighs as I’ve not sold Dawes for years, but it can’t be much over 15kg I’d have thought.

    EDIT – 13.6kg.
    Bosh.

I’m sure XC use isn’t going to push them beyond their limits. I’d love to hear how you bent yours.
The new V12 Mag’s are 350g and are reasonably priced. I’ve got both new style V12s and Vaults and both are lovely and grippy.

I’ve never bent any as I don’t run flats.
I did have a succession come back for warranty though all bent, although I was assured by Upgrade that they had not heard of it happening to anyone else…

    Does include 2 HC climbs?
If not might I suggest a spot of rule 5?

I heard that if you buy them from China rather than an LBS, kittens literally explode as soon as they get within 10 feet of you, showering you with gory kittenbits, and the very real chance of losing an eye to a high velocity baby cat tooth.

Wellgo MG1’s are pretty popular with us – lighter than V12’s, cheaper than V12’s, similar shape if she’s comfortable with that.

The new Gamut pedals are really light, however the pins are about 12 feet long and look ready to ruin the shins of most unarmoured riders.

I have yet to attempt removing my XX1 cassette not looking forward to it at all, i did remember to apply copious amounts of copper grease before installing though.

I remember not long after launch hearing horror stories of ungreased xx1 cassettes being a pain to remove but IRL I’ve not come across one at work yet and I do a fair bit of 1×11.

Of course that’s probably cursed it, and the next 5 will be seized on…
