managed to loose some of the pedal washers for my lx cranks – if I'm careful fitting the pedals will I be alright – or are they essential to stop threading the crank?

My understanding was that they just protected the surface between the pedal and the crank, important if you regularly change pedals. So long as you can screw the pedal in a few turns by hand before using the spanner, you should be alright.
