sorry for the no doubt stupidest question, but just to make sure rather than tighten them on even more, which way to undo shimano pedals?

im guessing undoing them means pulling/pushing towards the rear of the bike on both sides?

    Yes, to the rear

LH pedal has a LH thread, RH pedal has a RH thread.

cool cheers, so no matter where i stand to do this operation, im always pushing/pulling towards the rear end on BOTH sides…

i know im going to have trouble getting current ones off, so i really dont want to be tightening any more with force

If you have the proper spanner I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised how easily they come off.

The way I remember is, with the crank arm pointing forward, and the allen key/pedal spanner pointing forward from the crank arm, you push the key/spanner downwards 🙂

think ive just confused myself thinking about how to do this 😆

Imagine pedaling forwards. The direction the pedals turn relative to the crank arms is the direction you turn them to loosen them.

On > Forwards (front of bike)
Off > Backwards (rear of bike)

for both sides and easy enough to remember.

Stick the spanner or allen key on.

Hold it in the same plane the whole time (eg, 3 o’clock)

Pedal forwards to remove, pedal backwards to install

left pedal = left hand thread.

Backpedal to screw on, forward to get remove.

    😆

i am being rather retarded about this….

right im stood/kneeling behind the bike (so visually the pedals cranks are directly infront of me), the allen key is in the pedal, i am then pulling towards me to remove right? pulling backwards (towards the rear mech etc) and NOT forward either side toweards the forks?

WE WILL GET THERE (apologies for the complete and utterly stupid thoughts im having, no idea why im struggling to engage this in my head 😆 )

Backwards to rear mech, both sides.

Yes, assuming the allen key/pedal wrench is above the pedal axle…

Pedal at bottom of stroke, allen key in pointing upwards, move top of allen key towards back of bike

rusty – not yet, not attempting till later, though i know they are gonna be stuck, hence me making trebly (if not more) sure that im not adding more tightening 😆

i dont think i copper greased the threads, thats why im sure they are gonna be stuck on 🙁

I used to only get confused when the bike was upside down and I’m trying to undo pedals with an allen key from the back of the crank!

….but this thread has confused me more!

    Right hand – normal thread

Easiest way ever that I was told and everyone I tell gets it……

When the bike is vertical and the spanner is vertical, BACK OFF.

Just remember BACK OFF – turn the pedal towards the back of the bike and the pedal comes off – same on each side. OMFG! ROFL!
