Just before Christmas I washed my down jacket as it got beer spilled all over it 🙁

I used the proper nikwax fluids for cleaning and waterproofing (it’s goose down rather than synthetic) and dried it for a long time on low heat.

A lot of the down in the arms seems still be clumping together lots leaving really empty spots in the baffles, is there anything in particular I can do to try and get it spread out again?

    Thanks!

Put 3 tennis balls in with it inside the tumble dryer..

If it’s been washed in the proper stuff, drying it with a couple of tennis balls or old (clean) trainers helps break the down up

how longs it been drying for ?

and were you agitating it as it dried ….

if its clumped and not regularly been shaken out a bit to break up the clumps then it may well still be wet in there.

the tumblrdrier tenis balls thing work well – i find it worth going to a laundrette just for that tbh.

my method was to squeeze out the water as much as poss (might have poss spun it on the slowest spin). take down the launderette and tumble forever on low. just sounds like you haven’t tumble dried it for long enough, think it used to cost me about £10 in 20p’s, probably sat there for 2 hours+.

I’d take it to a launderette, get them to pop it into one of thier massive dryers with other stuff.. £5 max.

I’ve got a couple of down jackets and some synthetic ones, they clump up after washes too and I take them to the launderette up the road to get them dried.

I’ve used one of these with a down sleeping bag a couple of times and it’s worked great.

Key is to put it on a low heat in the tumble dryer and take out and shake every 30mins or so. Once you think it’s dry, dry it some more, then dry it again. Takes ages but the clumps of down will come apart if you keep taking it out and giving it a shake.

I’ve got a down jacket I bought many years ago, and it was recommended that after washing with detergent-free soap it’s tumble-dried with a clean sneaker, like a canvas Converse hi-top.
