I’ve seen other pubs ruined by people who think they can run it like their own little fiefdom, just a place for their mates to hang out

That’s exactly what happened to the pub my g/f’s folks owned when I first met her, the Crown, at Giddeahall on the A420 about five miles from Chippenham. They sold up and moved to Salisbury, and a new bloke took over who was just as described. What was a really busy pub with excellent food was shut within six months! 🤬

Has anyone been to the Pigs nose inn – East Prawle ?

Yes, a few times, when I’ve stayed at Beesands. I’ve walked along to Start Point, then round to East Prawle, had a couple of pints then carried on walking back to Beesands via Hallsands.
The landlord is, shall we say, a ‘character’? 😉

One thing I really miss living in Germany is proper pubs.

There's one place in town that comes close. Only sells his own beers and he has more than just Helles, Dunkles and Weißbier.

The Ship Inn at Low Newton by Sea is pretty close to perfect in my book, just a little too busy on a sunny day.

The thing with spectator sports generally is, if you're into it then it's great. However if you're not then it's shit because even with the sound off people cannot watch it quietly. So you're sat with a couple of friends having a quiet natter and half the pub suddenly erupts into "AAAAAAAYYYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOO ON OOOH" and things of that nature generally. Football generally seems particularly bad for it, though that might just be confirmation bias on my part.

See also, karaoke. That surely must drive away as much custom as it attracts. I've certainly heard more people go "oh bollocks, it's karaoke night, let's go somewhere else" than I have go "ooh, karaoke, fantastic!"

local, great cycling on the doorstep. Decent beer & cider. Decent food. etc

If you like The Bell, which is indeed a gem, you'd also like the Black Horse near Checkendon/Stoke Row in the Chilterns.
